Different Learning Techniques:

VAK LEARNING STYLES:

VAK learning styles theory is designed to describe how four distinct types of learners process information. Based upon the VAK (visual, auditory, reading/writing and kinesthetic) model of learning, VAK learning styles theory was pioneered in 1987 by Neil Fleming. Fleming's contribution to the prior model was to divide the visual learning component into two parts, a symbolic aspect (represented as V) and a text aspect (represented as R). Additionally, Fleming advanced the original theory to supplement the auditory learning and kinesthetic learning components of traditional VAK theory.

There are 3 styles of preferred learning using sensory skills:

VISUAL (See / imagine / pictures)

AUDITORY (Hear / listen / sounds)

TACTILE / KINESTHETIC (Touch / move / experience)

Each preferred style has several specific characteristics that contribute to learning. An individual prefers to use these characteristics when they learning styles.

Visual Style Characteristics: The learner

Prefers to see information & instructions, they may forget information that has only been heard

Enjoys writing, drawing & imagining

Prefers to create their own notes and to read for themselves

Sees pictures & images when they remember things. May use mind maps.

It is especially useful to think about how these learners may use, or not use libraries. They may be more willing to use the electronic services than the physical space of the library, where they feel uneasy because they are expected to keep fairly quiet and not move about too much.

Honey and Mumford learning styles are better known in the UK than those of Kolb, who is better known in the academic psychology sector. Their work is a good example of adapting academic research into an easy to understand model for practitioners. As information professionals, you need to understand the origins of these styles, especially if you use them for developing skills for information literacy.

 Vak - visual, auditory, kinesthetic - learning styles model and free self-test:

The VAK learning styles model and related VAK learning styles tests offer a relatively simple methodology. Therefore it is important to remember that these concepts and tools are aids to understanding overall personality, preferences and strengths - which is always a mixture in each individual person.

As with any methodology or tool, use VAK and other learning styles ideas with care and interpretation according to the needs of the situation. They are guide as to the mixture of preferences, strengths and learning styles in an individual, not a basis for deciding on one exclusive preference or approach to the exclusion of everything else.

VAK learning styles:

The Visual-Auditory-Kinesthetic learning styles model or 'inventory', usually abbreviated to VAK, provides a simple way to explain and understand your own learning style (and learning styles of others).

'Learning style' should be interpreted to mean an individual mixture of styles. Everyone has a mixture of strengths and preferences. No-one has exclusively one single style or preference. Please bear this in mind when using these ideas.

Alternatively the model is referred to as Visual-Auditory-Physical, or Visual-Auditory-Tactile/Kinesthetic (or Kinaesthetic). The model is also extended by some people to VARK (Visual-Auditory-Reading-Kinesthetic) or VACT (Visual-Auditory-Kinesthetic-Tactile), and you can decide yourself about the usefulness of such adaptations.

The VAK learning styles model provides a very easy and quick reference inventory by which to assess people's preferred learning styles, and then most importantly, to design learning methods and experiences that match people's preferences:

Visual learning style involves the use of seen or observed things, including pictures, diagrams, demonstrations, displays, handouts, films, flip-chart, etc.

Auditory learning style involves the transfer of information through listening: to the spoken word, of self or others, of sounds and noises.

Kinesthetic learning involves physical experience - touching, feeling, holding, doing, practical hands-on experiences.

Here is a free VAK learning style indicator, which can be used as a questionnaire or 'test' to assess your own preferred learning style or styles, or the VAK learning styles of your people. Score each statement and then add the totals for each column to indicate learning style dominance and mix. Your learning style is also a reflection of the type of person you are - how you perceive things and the way that you relate to the world. This questionnaire helps you to improve your understanding of yourself and your strengths.There are no right or wrong answers.

I can use various scoring systems to suit your purposes:

Method 1 - Simplest and quickest - select one from each line and add the total selections for each column. The totals will indicate your relative learning style preference and mix.

Method 2 - More subtle measurement - takes longer, but probably worth it - score each option either 1, 2 or 3 points. Clearer indication will be produced if no options in a single line are scored the same, but it's up to you. I get out what you put in. Decide whether to allow equal scores or not, and most importantly then apply the rule for the whole of the questionnaire.

Method 3 - Re-structure the matrix into a multiple choice-style questionnaire - takes longer, but is more likely to avoid 'leading' or influencing the person being assessed because the format is less transparent. Each of the 30 questions would be structured as per this example, and could either ask for a single selection or to score each option 1, 2, or 3:

(A scoring grid would need to be created so as to enable calculation of totals for all a's b's and c's.)

Method 4 - As method 3, but mix up the order of the options within each question, so as to reduce the transparency of the options and which style they relate to - this takes even longer and is a pain in the backside to score because 'a, b, c' would no longer correlate to 'V, A, K', so you'd need quite a clever scoring grid to achieve this, and a reasonably serious project to justify the effort.

However I calculate the totals, ensure I use the chosen method consistently throughout the questionnaire. The total scores for each style indicate my relative preferred learning style or styles. There are no right or wrong answers. Some people have very strong preferences, even to the extent that they have little or no preference in one or two of the styles. Other people have more evenly balanced preferences, with no particularly strong style. The point is simply to try to understand as much as I can about yourself and my strengths (my preferred style or styles), and then make best use of learning methods which suit my strengths (my preferred style or styles).

Personal Development Planning can be defined as a process that helps to think about your own learning, performance and/or achievements and to plan for personal, educational and career development. Personal development planning or PDP means creating opportunities to think through, in a structured way, questions such as:

What do I really want to achieve from life?

What kind of person do I want to be?

Am I clear about my personal goals and ambitions?

Am I making the right decisions to get me where I really want to be?

Am I in charge of my life and my studies - or am I just hoping it all will work out somehow? 

It has been recognised that students need structured opportunities to think about, and plan towards, their future. The exact content really depends on you. How much of your time do you want to give now to planning your future?

Constructing my Personal Development:

By planning my personal development it provides me facilities motivation and offers a framework for monitoring and evaluating the process. Before developing an action plan the taking decision is an important to implement the plan. It goes hand in hand with decision making. To activities the plan first I have to understand the problem or identifying the task which I am facing. Then I need to evaluate the possible solution and decide the open goals or making a decision.

Developing Time and Self-Management Skills:

Self-management is a part of time management. When I see what is important for me to organise the culture and the values at my work to support me, I feel much more in control. To success at a high level in my life I will need to have writing, speaking and presentation, communication and management or leadership skills among others. I need to know how to convey information, verbally or non-verbally to people I am contact with.

I will be committed to life-time learning process. If I really want to distinguish myself in my career, it's important to commit to constantly striving to increase my knowledge and improve my skills. Employers value those workers who constantly strive to become experts in their fields. The business must realise that records kept will be one of the most important management tools it possesses and, therefore, it should be allocated due importance. The business owner is looking for the maximum return from their investment and the maintaining of good records is part of that equation.

For the business to achieve its success and profit, it is necessary for the scores to be kept, as it were. Carefully analyze whether it is my actual career I dislike or whether my employer, supervisor, or office situation is the problem.

4. Do your research:

Be sure to examine all possibilities before attempting a career jump. Talk to people in my network; read career and job profiles; meet with a career management professional. The more information with which I arm myself beforehand, the more successful I will be.

4. Examine your qualifications.

Do you have the necessary experience and education to be considered a qualified candidate in my desired career field? If not, I need to find a way to bridge the credentials gap. This might mean making my goal more long-term while I go back to school or receive additional training.

It is especially important to polish up my job-hunting skills and techniques before I get out there and start networking.Make sure I'm using my time and resources as effectively as possible.
