As you can see at this extensive table of the coming month, there will be a lot to do . I will try the best to keep to this self-made schedule; since every thing is widely divided it will be doable and not be a big problem. But if this schedule will be interrupted by other important school events, I will catch up and do some more at the next day.
I'm Daniel and I live in Oegstgeest. Oegstgeest is a small and peaceful town with little pollution. I like sports: Football, tennis and swimming. What I don't like is pollution! When I was on vacation in Quito(Ecuador) there was like a large cloud of polluted gasses. This is mainly caused, of course by the large pollution of cars and trucks, but also because Quito is located in a valley so most of the time polluted air stays in the valley! Beside that Ecuador is a very nice country with the beautiful beaches, Volcanoes and Landscapes, but if we want this to stay we must change otherwise these beautiful natural aspects could disappear in several decades.
In this project you are going to learn more about Global warming. What is Global warming actually all about? Do you realise when you are watching your favourite TV program or
Playing a video game, that you actually participate with Global
Warming while you are watching tv, These are only 2 examples. While you are doing these thinks, at other parts of the world trees are been
cut, animals are killed and water level is rising. We have
to be carful with our resources. We can't life endlessly this way. What can we do?
What is Global Warming?
There are many reasons of global warming. Many people think that humans have caused most of global warming by exposing dangerous gases like Co2 and other harmful gasses, also called greenhouse gases,
One major thing that causes global warming is electrical pollution. Electricity causes pollution in many ways. fossil fuels are burned to make electricity and are made of dead plants and animals. Which are squeezed under the ground for millions of years. An example of fossil fuels is Oil which they made Petrol and Kerosene of. These fluids are nowadays used for almost all machines, for example for airplanes, cars etc. Many chemicals that pollute are sent into the air when fossil fuels are burned. Some of these chemicals are called greenhouse gasses, which are very harmful.
Other ways of polluting the air are:
- Lights turned on
- Watching T.V.
- Listening to a stereo
- Washing or drying clothes
- Using your ipod
- Riding a car
- Using the microwave
- Using an air conditioner
- Playing a video game (Play station/Xbox360)
Also , other factors influence global temperatures. Volcanic eruptions, for example, emit particles that cool down the Earth's surface for a short time, but these have no heavy effect beyond a few years.
At the moment humans have increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by more than 1/3 since the industrial revolution. Changes this large will actually have taken thousands of years, but are now happening over the course of decades. So we are changing in a positive way, but it not enough yet.
Why is Global warming a concern?
The fast rise in greenhouse gases is a big problem because it is changing the climate faster than some living things are able to keep up too. Also, fast changes of climate are not good for nature.
Historically, Earth's climate has regularly changed back and forth between temperatures like those we see today and temperatures cold enough that large sheets of ice covered much of North America and Europe. The difference between average global temperatures today and during those ice ages is only about 5 degrees Celsius.
Now, with concentrations of greenhouse gases rising, Earth's remaining ice glaciers such as in the North-pole and South-Pole are starting to melt too. The extra water due to this melting can cause for a dangerously high sea level.
The climate can change in unexpected ways. Sea levels rising, weather can become more extreme. This means more storms, more rain followed by longer and drier droughts. changes in the forests in which plants and animals can life, and loss of water supplies that actually come from glaciers.
At the table you see the consequences of Global Warming if we don't change our life style.
So what can we do to stop Global warming?
People are doing many things to try to stop global warming. One thing people are doing is carpooling. Carpooling is driving with someone to a specific place that you are both going to. So you emit less harmful gasses.
Another thing that people are doing is being more careful about leaving things turned on like the computer, television and the lights. A lot of people are taking time away from the computer and television, and instead, they are spending more time outside. This helps our planet out a lot. Now, more people are using public transport , walking to school, and riding their bikes to lower the amount of greenhouse gases in the air. Without trees we can't life so planting trees and recycling also helps. When you recycle, less trash goes to the dump, so less trash gets burned. So , there are fewer greenhouse gasses released in our atmosphere.
So next time when you go to the shops, look what you buy. Many things, like hairspray and deodorant , are now produced in such a way that it emits less dangerous gasses into the air. This is just a small attempt to help but still global warming will slow down.
We are now at the end of the journey. You have read that Global Warming is a really serious problem and why it so important to contribute in helping against Global Warming. Every little thing helps. From leaving the shower 2 minutes earlier to going by public transport. So if you next time go to school, don't forget to turn of the lights! Global warming is a major problem. We have to decide quickly, before it is too late!
