My ideal career would be in computer forensics possibly working for the police. This job involves using computer forensic techniques in order to recover and analyse information from computers or electronic media. The evidence they find then needs to be put together so that it can be used in court.

The personal qualities that I believe I have that will aid me in my chosen career include patience. I believe this is a necessary personal quality as retrieving and analysing information from digital appliances is time consuming and if you are inpatient you may miss small details which could lead to a break through.

Having worked for digital house predominantly in the area of fixing peoples computers I have had the opportunity to practice using some of the skills that could be applied to my chosen career. Namely the ability to notice minor details that lead to why the computer is broken this in turn leads to the breakthrough of fixing the computer. This relates to another of my personal qualities is that i am very observant and often notice minor details or problems that some people can easily miss. As I have had allot of practice at fixing computers; this also links to being able to restore broken or erased computer hard drives which are then fixed in order to gather evidence or information. This is a key part of my chosen career. As the world is moving forward digitally more and more evidence and links to people is being found on digital appliances. Part of what motivates my interest in computer forensics is how far it has come in the past 20 years from not existing to helping solve some major crimes and its potential.

New areas of learning will include preparing for court appearances as it is sometimes necessary to testify in court. This is something that I have not had to do although I have had practice in public speaking preparing a report and providing it to a wide range of people ensuring that people who are digitally literate and those who are not can all understand is something that I have not yet experienced. I will also have to write a variety of reports and fill in forms and evidence logs so that the investigating officers can read through it. Computer forensics is a very scientific subject and is based on evidence not speculation however I believe that you also will pick up on traits of people places where people generally hide information this is partly linked to psychology and partly linked to common sense I think that you pick up on these traits after many years of experience so that is also another learning challenge.

I am lucky to be very familiar with the various components of computers but I am not as familiar with various components of other digital media such as cameras mobile phones ect so this is another area of new learning.

Personal development plan

In order onto my chosen course (digital forensics) I have to pass any access course of my choice. I originally wanted to do the computing course as it was most similar to my degree course however there was not enough space. So I am now on the business course I feel that this has actually aided me because it has given me more of an opportunity to practice my written/ essay skills. It has also provided me with the opportunity to practice compiling evidence this may sound unusual but within

each essay you have to provide supportive arguments which is exactly what I will need to do in my chosen career: My arguments will have to be strong enough to stand up in court. As well as completing my degree course I hope to try and find some form of work experience in the police force to see if I enjoy it or whether I would prefer to enter some other career. Luckily the course I have chosen covers all areas of computing although it primarily focuses on digital forensics so I am not cutting myself off from entering another career if I do not end up wanting to work in digital forensics. I have managed to get a conditional offer at Bournemouth University my chosen place of study. So I hope to follow through from Richmond college into Bournemouth university and then into my chosen career. I will need to get the minimum of a 2.2 at university if I wish to enter the police force.

Personal statement

I find the fields of Ethical hacking and forensic computing fascinating so have decided to study a course which includes these areas. I have always been interested in the way computer systems are made secure: In particular the way in which penetration testing amongst other methods is used to ensure security. My other particular interest in computing is digital forensics and the way in which digital artifacts can be explained. I find computers enthralling they hold so much power, mystery as well as potential for discovery and explanation.

My national diploma helped me to develop both myself and my knowledge of the subject. It also helped me decide which fields of computing I want to study. I am sure that my higher education course will further my passion and will provide me with the depth that I need in order to progress to university level. I have read some books which have given me a more in depth over view to computer forensics these include "File System and Forensic analysis" by Brian Carrier this seemed to be a good reference guide to the subject and a book that I will hold onto for university. I also read "Digital evidence and computer crime" by Eoghan Casey however this seemed to be a little out of date but a similar but more up to date book "real digital forensics: Computer Security and Incident Response" by Keith J. Jones really brought the subject to life for me and made me see computer forensics in terms of real life scenarios. These made me realize how much I would love to take this further than a degree and use it in the work place.

My interest in computing has not been limited to the classroom and college work. As part of my Duke of Edinburgh award I helped teach computing to the Elderly. This provided me with a completely different perspective of computers and as I had to teach I had to find simple ways of explaining and breaking down computing areas that are now very familiar to me.

I also work in digital house which sells all different types of digital applications and spyware. This job has provided me with a vast amount of experience in fixing computers as well as selling them. I have also begun to build a website for the company giving me an opportunity to practice my creative as well as practical computer skills.

As well as computing I have many other hobbies which include photography in particular wildlife photography. I have turned my garage into a studio where I edit and put together all my photographs.

I also love to travel having lived in three different continents I feel that I have picked up many different experiences that I wouldn't have been able to have had I not had such a fantastic opportunity. This includes being able to speak fluent Arabic. I think that it is important to speak at least one other language in order to communicate in an in depth manner this is important in many jobs especially as we are now part of a multi cultural society. Running is another passion of mine and as I have had so many opportunities I have decided that through my running I will try and provide opportunities for others. I am currently training to run the marathon in three different continents and three very different climates. I aim to raise half a million pounds to go to local charities in the areas in which I grew up.

This will be quite a challenge not just physically but mentally too. I hope that this will prepare me mentally and provide me with the determination needed to do well at university.

I hope to go on to have a career within the police force either in the field of Computer Forensics or in the field of ethical hacking.

I relish the opportunity to study my favourite areas of computing at university level.

Action plan

My plan of action involves continuing to work at digital house as this provides me with allot of experience especially in the field of restoring broken or erased computer hard drives which are then fixed in order to gather evidence or information. This is key to my course I will continue to work here until I begin university in October when it will be impossible to continue as I will have to relocate. I will stay and complete the business course in order for me to begin university. Then during the holidays I will aim to get work experience in the digital area of the police force as well as trying to work for digital house in my holidays.

Timetable

Digital house from now until October.

Richmond college business course until the summer.

Bournemouth university digital forensics course from October 2010 - july 2013

In the holidays work experience with the police force.

Questions likely to be asked at interview.

1)What experience have you had in the field of digital forensics?

2)What do you feel you can bring to the course / job?

3)What challenges do you anticipate you will come across in this course/ job?

4)What interests you about this course/ job?

5)What would you like to end up doing with this course/ job?

Answers to these questions.

1)The main experience I have had in the field of digital forensics has come from my work at digital house. There as well as selling computers I also spend vast amounts of time fixing them. This has provided me with the opportunity to learn about the various components of the computer as well as practice retrieving information. As well as this my business course at Richmond college has provided me with the opportunity to practice my essay based skills something which I know to be important in the field of digital forensics as compiling evidence is a key part of the job.

2)I feel that I can bring a fresh perspective to the course as well as my personal qualities which include being patient and observant. I feel that these qualities are important as if you do not have patience you can easily miss details and if you are unobservant you may not notice the minor details which can be key to solving a case.

3)There will be many challenges which I will come across one of which will be standing in front of a court and giving evidence something which I have not had to do before however I have other experiences which relate and can help me through these challenges such as public speaking and preparing presentations which although in different subjects provide me with a base from which to extend/ reach out from.

4)I find everything digital fascinating in particular how far digital forensics have come in such a short span of time from being a none existing subject to helping solve some major crimes fascinates me.

5)My aim is to work for the metropolitan police as a digital forensics investigator and help to solve some major crimes.
