Wade Robson is a very talented dancer/choreographer and is one of the most gifted in the world. He has a very unique approach to dance as he combines pedestrian movements with classically influenced technique. Robson gets most of his inspiration from the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Although he combines pedestrian movements with classically influenced technique, he has never been classically trained. Wade mainly focuses on Hip Hop which is the root of what he does. He tries every style of dance and puts bits and pieces of each genre into his own personal style therefore it is always evolving and is always changing. He never likes being choreographed or being taught, he is always free-styling and doing his own thing.
Robson has always had an extraordinary eye for detail. In every dance piece that he does, he would create a story line or a theme before choreographing the dance steps. He loves to tell a story through his dance pieces instead of just steps that flows with the music. Every decision made is significant to the plot of the piece right down to the costumes. He would visualize his goals in his head in details and that would get him to achieve what he wants. Wade has a very unique approach to setting choreography. He would start off with a feeling and a vision then he would choose the music that would fit that specific vision. He would ensure the setting of the stage would be in line with the mood. It wouldn't just be dancing or choreographing, it would be an experience of art.
His creative process has become more organic over the years. It is due to the change in his movement vocabulary that goes beyond his earlier street style. When he was in his earlier pop phase, he would make sure he was always ready with everything worked out. Of late, he would work out the foundation and leave the rest to be created along the way. Wade put his new approach to the test when he was asked to work with the reality television show, So You Think You Can Dance.
Strange characters and weird dark worlds are 'his thing' such as one of his dance choreographies, the 'RAMALAMA' that was performed in the show, So You Think You Can Dance. It had a zombie theme and was performed theatrically, dressed in Victorian garb. It had lyrical elements and distortion involved. It looked a little like Michael Jackson's "THRILLER" video but it had a little twist to it that was unique and fresh. Wade has received many awards for his amazing choreographies including this choreography that brought him an Emmy Award in 2007 for Outstanding Choreography.
Wade Robson tends to put himself in challenging situations that allows him to push his creativity to greater heights. He is able to transform and turn himself into different characters according to his artistic visions. His choreography has no identifiable style. Apart from the zombie like choreography, he did a totally different style of dance in his Dancing With the Stars number in 2007 that was a dark, circus-like, funhouse atmosphere. He had his dancers dress up as circus performers and had a stage setting with circus props. The music that was chosen had a fun and playful tune and it gave off the vibe of being in an actual circus.
It is amazing how Wade takes an everyday life experience and expands it to new levels. His interpretation of a bird and a flower added with his incredible imagination and creativity, he produced a piece called 'Humming bird and the Flower' which got him another Emmy Award 2008 for Outstanding Choreography. It was showcased on So You Think You Can Dance in Season 3 by its finalists, a Japanese Hip Hop dancer, Hok Konishi and a Contemporary dancer, Jamie Goodwin. For this number, he and his wife conceptualized it and designed the costumes together. It was a love story of how two very different people/things could come together as one and how they were able to overcome their differences to be with one another in harmony. It was this particular piece that he had set the rehearsal space with lighted candles and played the chosen music to set the mood for the number.
His approach to dance is simple yet difficult. He follows what his heart desires and does not let popular dance or the current trend to disrupt what he wants to do. For this new found creative approach to dance, his choreography has become more original and unlike others. He goes with the flow of things, the flow of the story. Wade Robson puts himself out of his comfort zone not only to challenge himself but also to the general public in hope that he continues to push his limits and boundaries. In that way, he would be able to influence and push the limits of popular dance.
He has impacted many people to step up their game and inspire growing choreographers to think outside the box and to find possibilities of art in everything. He has made it to the top for his incredible gift, his creative vision and style, his approach to dance. He has not only made an incredible impact on dance, he has pushed the limit of how we look at dance.
I am inspired by Wade Robson's creativity and success. He was able to build a name for himself without any proper dance training. It gives me hope that I would be able to achieve my dreams as long as I put my heart into it and have the drive to continue dancing for the rest of my life. I was not properly trained either and coming to LASALLE has been quite a difficult but exciting experience for me. It is an everyday challenge to be dancing with friends who good in techniques and have classical training background. Wade Robson has given me faith and hope to believe in myself that I am able to achieve my goal, which is to become a great and inspiring dancer.
