The Intercultural Development Inventory was developed en formulated by Dr. Mitchell Hammer in cooperation with Dr. Milton Benneth. The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is a 60-item, theory based paper and pencil (or online) Instrument, which measures five of the six major stages of the Developmental Model of Intercultural. The IDI takes 15-20 minutes to accomplish and is well established as a tool for teaching and training purposes.
The five scales measured by the IDI, identified through confirmatory factor analysis, include: Denial, Polarization, Defense, Reversal, Minimization, Acceptance/Adaptation, and Cultural disengagement.

IDI is a statistically valid and reliable psychometric instrument. IDI is unique in many different aspects. It measures how a person or employee thinks and feels about diversity and cultural difference, therefore it measures how a person or employee perceives and organizes events, led by their cultural patterns. They call it one's person's mindset regarding cultural difference and diversity.
Most tests of "intercultural competence" measure how close the respondents matches a set of charasterictics or behaviors that are connected with intercultural competence. It is difficult to establish the reliability and validity for those tests. The IDI is a theory based test that can meet the standard scientific criteria for a valid psychometric instrument.

The IDI test reliability is extremely high. The items on the IDI are statements that are actually selected from different interviews of 40 subjects that represent cross-cultural and situational diversity. Almost all statements about cross-cultural difference were categorized by four different raters.
Denial, Defence and minimization. Also called the IDI Ethnocentric Scales has been seen as negatively with Worldmindedness and positively with Intercultural Anxiety.
