Literature review

Crime has existed in the world for a long period now. It has been happening because of various reasons and has impacted the world mostly in the negative way. All criminals are taken to be rational maximizers of the utility they expect to obtain from the crime as Gary Becker puts it. Criminal acts can bring forth benefits for the perpetrators of crime. The benefit they might derive from injuring someone they target or the resources they get from the crime. The detriment that comes against crime is the sanctions that the society sets for those involved in the crime have uncertain probability. People commit crime after they weigh the benefits against the costs of penetrating the crime (Campbell and Columbus, 2004)

In the early years crime was not widespread and thus was not a major subject to be discussed or be given importance but form the 19th century it started increasing at an alarming rate and had to be given attention. Crime worldwide increased as a result of the society in the entire world losing values and norms. This was coupled by increase of the financial gap between the rich and the poor and the improvement in technology world wide.

Crime has had adverse effects in the entire world. Many people have lost their lives because of terrorism attacks. Property and buildings worth millions of money have been destroyed. Many other people have been left with permanent injuries as a result of crime. Drug trafficking has had dangerous effects on the users especially the youth who have become addicted and are forced to participate in crime so as to get money to purchase the drugs. Some of them have developed health complications as a result of taking the drugs. Countries have had to spend much money tying to caution themselves from crime or even trying to bring hardcore criminals to book (Beckett and Sasson, 2003).

The society and countries have been trying to come up with ways which can help them prevent crime. Among the measures taken, coming up with forms of punishment to eliminate crime has been being explored by countries. This has not been easy because the perpetrators commit crime for different reasons and they carry out a cost benefit analysis before committing crimes. The punishments for crime are imposed to the criminals by the courts. The punishments vary in scope and severity depending on the weight of the crime committed and whether it has been committed on humanity or another thing. Punishments range from death penalties, life imprisonments, partial imprisonment, compensation and fine payment. Crime has been on the increase lately mainly because of the increase in poverty levels. Criminals engage themselves in crime in order to get money to provide for their basic and other needs. They give little importance to punishments because the benefits out weigh the costs. Lack of education among some members of the society is also the cause of crime. This is the cause because due to lack of education they languish in poverty and decide to engage in crime.

As opposed to the previous, there is a considerable amount of documents that have been published regarding crime and punishment for instance the work of Michel Foucault and Elias Norbert. Over the past few years the history of criminal justice has been dealing with filling gaps in knowledge and assessing forms of crime and punishment. There has been a significant shift in research from property crime to study of violence referring to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries where property crime formed the major topic of crime study (Elgin, 2009).

Research methodology

In carrying out this research, I intend to use I depth interviews to find the information that is needed. The in depth interview will be carried out using questioneers presented to the members of the community. The questions that will be included in the questioneer are as follows;

Have you ever been affected by crime?

What form of crime were you involved in?

Has the authorities done much to cut the crime rate down?

How effective is the punishment system employed in reducing the crime?

Are the punishments properly administered?

Is there follow up to ensure that the punishments are implemented?

Are the punishments working or should they be intensified and increased?

What is your opinion on the type of punishment that should be administered?

The population to be interviewed will be identified through randomized selection in the entire population. The selection will involve people from age fifteen too age seventy. It will include both male and female members of the population. The research will be undertaken at the ground with the subjects in their homes or their work places.

Research problem analysis

From the literature review it is evident that crime will increase more if the situation of poverty is let to increase. People will continue to commit crimes because they wont stay hungry or without other important necessities. The society is to ensure that the entire population especially the younger generation get an education to enable them have high chances of getting employment in the future in order to contain the high cases of crime.

Conclusion

Crime and punishment are two issues that have existed for a long period of time. The causes of crime have been mainly poverty and lack of employment. The effects that have come with crime have been very adverse and the situation threatens to continue if something is not done to contain the situation. The punishment although important, does not solve the issue of crime no matter how painful or intense it may be. The most important issue is to find the cases of crime and to explore ways with which to eliminate these causes and then deal with punishment issues later. Crime cannot be dealt with entirely but much reduction of its occurrence is very possible. Punishment is what will help deal with the remaining instances of crime.
