Today women have many tasks and responsibilities whether it be taking care of a child or holding onto a relationship that they cannot seem to keep. For these specific reasons is why women are incarcerated and sent behind bars. For women to be in prison is something that many researchers don't realize is that they are not treated well and there time there is not pleasant. In my research I will explain and summarize the life of women in prison, the how comes of why women are sent to prison, discuss the high volumes of women being sent to prison, there work and medical treatment that women face, race, and lastly women's relationships in and out of the prison bars.

For going on two decades, the number of women behind bars has dramatically increased. Women serving sentences longer than a year have grew up to 757 percent between the years 1977-2004, that's twice as much of an increase from the males population in prison says a report from The Institute on Women (Bureau of Justice Statistics Bulletin,2006). In the year 2010 approximately 113,000 women were incarcerated in federal and state accommodations while there were 1.5 million male inmates. The statistics of women being in prison are incredibly hard to believe. A source from the Statistics about Women Prisoners say that 33% of women are sent to prison because of violent offenses, 29% because of property offenses, and astonishing 32% were faced years in prison because of drug offenses (Bureau of Justice Statistics Bulletin). The ages of women in prison are drastically different and change regularly. The age group 18 to 24 years old is around 12% behind bars, 25 to 29 years old are 18%, 30 to 34 years old is 24%, and ages 35 and older average out the other 45% of the women inmates in prison. Sources from the Institute of Women also state that 64% of women who enter prison do not currently have a high school diploma (Greene, 2004). The women who have some college calculate to around 14% that are sentenced in prison. Although most of our prisons are homes to more men, there is a high increase of women that is also joining the prison family as well.

The reasons for the amount of women in prison are surrounded by three certain causes. These all surround a certain economic crisis. These causes are because of property offenses, violent crimes, and drug offenses. In this paragraph I explain the reasons for all three of these offenses. First and foremost I will discuss property offenses because it is not the biggest offense that women are charged for today. Although the crime rate of property offenses has slowed down the women decrease in the crimes has not. Women arrests of property offenses are mainly because of burglary, grand theft auto, and arson. This goes on the same path as shoplifting, forged checks, and also e-crime which is the fact that women can be at home and make money off their computer by credit card fraud. Another crime that puts women is prison is violent crimes. Actually violent crimes took shoplifting off the top of the list. These crimes consist of manslaughter and assault. These crimes together have come to a 35% of the committed crimes from women says an article by Jack Doyle from Record Numbers of Women (Doyle, 2005).

. The ages that committed these crimes will shock you. For the crimes committed 25% of violent crimes were ages 10 and 17. In some states such as Oklahoma, the women in prison population have almost doubled the national average because of violent crimes says a Fox news article (Alford, 2009). Lastly one of the huge reasons that women serve time behind bars is because of drugs. Sources from WPA say that between the years of 1997 and 2006 the drug abuse violations skyrocketed at a 30% increase while men only had a 16% rise (Greene, 2004). There are many reasons why drug abuse comes into play to send many women to prison. Causes are stress, education drop outs, single mother life, or the leaving of a relationship. Although these reasons for women inmates have changed dramatically, the populations of prison of theses' crimes have not decreased.

Something to understand in today's prisons is the amount of different race and discrimination. Of our women incarcerated 60 to 67% is black or Hispanic says an article from Stats about Women Prisoners (Bureau of Justice Statistics Bulletin). Also in the year 2008, ninety-three out of one hundred thousand women were white, 349 out of every 100,000 were black women, and 147 out of 100,000 women were Hispanic. Violent crimes because of different race are lower in women prisons then it is in men's prisons. Actually women crimes in prison is more looked at to the new inmates that come to prison. More arguments and fights are caused this way not the fact that there a different race. There is no research that explains that because you're a different race that your looked different upon in women's prisons. Discrimination is overlooked in today. A crime a white women committed with get fewer years for the same as if a black women done it. Article from corrections say that this is not a problem unless it is brought up or recognized as a major situation (Kravitz, 2010). Due to these accusations of women race and discrimination, there are more counts of rape because of it. The men think they can use them. Administration of the prison such as staff, wardens, service workers use women inmates as sex slaves in change of cigarettes or phone calls. Because a lot of this overlooked, a lot of women inmate become pregnant and this leads to the medical and health issues that women face.

Health is a critical caption of women in prison. Many women behind bars are medically inclined. These reasons are because of their levels of mental illness, and drug usage says a report of UNODC (Bergh, 2009). The incline of HIV infections, diseases like tuberculosis and hepatitis are increasing in our prisons especially towards the women that have mental problems and alcohol addictions and abuse. In some studies from the UNODC, prisons are mostly for men so the health issues are not surrounded for women (Bergh, 2009). This is meaning that prisons are designed for men and have facilities to care for men. Prisons do not have the facilities to protect women's health. A lot of the women prison inmates have a post-traumatic stress order. This mainly means that because of this disorder, women are more capable of harming themselves and committing suicide. Also because there are fewer women prisons, women are sent far away from home which causes this actions and also causes families to melt down, especially loved ones. This also has a great deal with their children if the inmates were mothers. An article from corrections says that when a woman is imprisoned the father normally does not take care of the child and then the child is placed in foster homes and often institutionalized (Kravitz, 2010). In addition this article, in some countries very young children can stay with the mother while in prison. The main causes of the health of women in prisons are because a lot of it overlooked and women are not being treated for their mental or health issues.

When women are locked away in prison, there are certain things that they can do to value there time wisely. This means that if they are on good behavior or if part of their sentence from committing a crime, they can have a job. Half of the women locked behind bars are taking education or vocational courses because an average of around one to five women has completed high school or have a GED says an article from WPA (Greene. 2004). These jobs such as learning basic math and English help the inmates provide character that they could easily show their loved ones. Also to learn how to work on cars or any other transportation can help provide the women skills so if one day released can use to their ability. A lot of women locked in today's prison cannot have these opportunities because of their bad behavior or many issues that these inmates may face.
