Young teenagers are abusing all sorts of drugs across the globe. The most prevalent drug abused is synthetic marijuana. Synthetic marijuana has got great impact on the health of the users. The drug affects development, learning, social life, family ties and schooling of young teens. The research conducted by federal government department of Drug Abuse Warning Network postulated that forty percent of young people between the age of ten and above are using and abusing synthetic marijuana. This reveals that the problem is almost becoming epidemic because it is being used too frequently and at a tender age for negative purposes by the young people (Bean 2009). Medical implications of abusing synthetic marijuana have seen many of the young teens being admitted at the hospital. The drug results to irrational and solitary behaviours and its abuse is due to lack of awareness among the young people. Use of synthetic marijuana for a certain period of time may eventually lead to addiction and abuse of other drugs. Therefore abuse of marijuana among the young teens has lead to increase in school drop outs as the drug affects learning. Many schooling issues among the young teens are as a result of using synthetic marijuana. Use of the drug has led to the increase of social immoralities among the young teen such as involvement in crimes, violent behaviours, drug trafficking and even murder. Due to the associated health complications, synthetic marijuana has been banned in many countries. This paper tries to survey the impact of synthetic marijuana on young teens in the society and learning institutions (Bean 2009).
Synthetic marijuana is a drug commonly referred to as street drug which contains a mixture of plants and active compounds similar to those of marijuana. The drug has been branded street names such as Spice, Aroma, K2, Mr. Smiley, Dream and Blaze among others. Synthetic marijuana is prevalent among the young teens because it is readily available. The drug can be purchased in selected stores and over the internet via online. The drug has got same effects as those of active compound in marijuana. Therefore the drug will result to agitation, violent behaviour, sweating profusely and incoherent speech and isolation behaviours (Ho 2012). The drug poses a great challenge to the young teens and the economy because it cannot be tested easily by the normal drugs tests. Little or no effort has been put in regard to analysing the effects of the drug in details. Therefore the drug is becoming popular by day among the young teens as they can go undetected. The problem arises when the drug intoxication level start manifesting among the youth. At that level symptoms of addiction are in place whereby many of the users will seek medical attention due to health implications associated with the drug (Thrasybule 2012). Effects of the synthetic marijuana can be short term or long term based on the period of use. General effects of synthetic marijuana include physiological and behavioural effects. Change of behaviours include euphoria feeling, disorientation impaired learning and memory. There are also occurrences of mood change and weird behaviours. Physiological effects include increase in heart rate, high blood pressure, dry mouth and reduced respiratory activity as a result of lung damage. Synthetic marijuana can be taken in various ways ranging from smoking or eating the product mixed with food materials (Hsu 2012).
Short term effects of synthetic marijuana include total disorientation and unresponsiveness to the physical environment. Research revealed that the victims usually lacks body control and coordination whereby eyes remain wide opened and the mouth cannot move. Therefore the victim is unable to speak. Another symptom of victims abusing synthetic marijuana is profuse breathing, agitation and restlessness. There is also involuntary movement of body muscles, slow speech and hallucinations. Researchers suggest that there is no certain cure for synthetic marijuana intoxication. Short term effects last for some time and are limited. Long term effects of synthetic marijuana include immune suppression, occurrence of cancer mainly lung cancer, loss of memory, psychic problems and addiction. Therefore these symptoms have greatly impacted young teen’s behaviour in the society. The family background, the government, learning institutions and the community as a whole has failed in one way or the other in controlling the spread of the synthetic marijuana and use. Violence among the youth is on the increase in US (Ho 2012). The effects of violence among the youth are felt by all the people ranging from the family, friends and society as whole. There are various synthetic marijuana related violence activities which youth engage in such as bullying, assault, homicide, other drugs abuse and suicide mainly due to harassment. Many organisations have come to the aid of the youth trying to solve the issue and create awareness in the society. Learning institutions are the main area the issue of synthetic marijuana abuse is prevalent among the youth. Therefore there is need to formulate policies governing the control or even banning of synthetic marijuana among the youth and implementing them to contain the vice. The prevention plan should aim at decreasing the situations that place the youth to abuse synthetic marijuana. The plan should aim at creating healthy environment of the youth who are at risk of using the drug and setting up youth educating facilities to counsel them and inform them on dangers associated with the drug (Thrasybule 2012).
Research reveals that many young teens use synthetic marijuana due to harassment or the surrounding they are brought up in. Violent injury and fatal deaths caused by use of this drug are being felt on daily basis in US especially in learning institutions. Young teens abuse the drug mainly due to poverty, peer influence, broken family ties and society, inadequate after-school learning programs, increase in gangs’ formation and alcohol. Many youths are exposed to violence and harassment in their homes, at learning institutions and in the society. The aftermath of this treatment is depression, psychological harm, disorientation, anger, isolation and increased risk of causing violence such as physical harm. Through perpetual exposure of these activities for a long period, the youths tend to acquire and adopt the environment thus the risk of abusing synthetic drug is increased with time. Therefore the prevalence of the issue has been enhanced due to inadequate campaigns geared towards educating the young teens about implications of the synthetic marijuana to their health. Various methods have been adopted to curb the occurrence of the issue but many have been short-lived in US. Survey suggests that there is urgent need to create a lasting solution and this can be achieved through prevention programs (Gianni Devincenti Hayes 2011).
In year 2000, statistics conducted in US by World Health Organisation revealed that approximately fifteen thousand tenth grade students have used the drug. 30% these students were involved in cases of bullying in school. Among the statistics, males are the main affected and after using the drug many engage in committing crimes than females. The study showed that the youth were engaging in violence mainly due to their upbringing environment and the use of synthetic marijuana. The study revealed that 13% of youth are using the drug because of harassment from school whereby many have committed murder and robbery. The survey was conducted on private and public learning institutions in US. The evidence based research conducted by National Bureau of Economic Research in US about drug abuse and young teens showed 50% of youth engage in drug use due to external forces and influences. External factors such as lifestyles and peer factor play a great role in young teens using the synthetic marijuana (Ho 2012). The research postulates that young youth as old as fourteen years are using the drug based on their surroundings. Evident based prevention violence program are now in application in some of the learning institutions as a requirement formulated by the federal government of US. The programs are not strongly implemented and due to this laxity of the government there is increase in use of the drug Research conducted in US has shown that gangs grouping have increased in states such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. The gangs accelerate the abuse of the synthetic drugs to the young teen members of the group. Learning institutions contains high percentage of young teens whereby the issue of peer pressure make s many to use the drug. (Thrasybule 2012)
It is estimated that 50% of men who assaulted their wives also abused their young teens in form of sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse and divorce or separation impact in US. These family wrangles had great impact to behaviour change to the youth such as depression, anxiety and violence towards peers. Statistics have shown youth under stress or depression have abused synthetic marijuana in search of comfort. Misuse of the drug has further facilitated the young teens to commit suicide, abuse other drugs and alcohol, escape home and engage in pornography and committing crimes (Gianni Devincenti Hayes 2011). Research has shown that abuse of synthetic marijuana in US by the youth enhances them to commit crimes and violence (Ho 2012). Some of the youth opt not to seek help from relevant people and organisations when they are faced with a certain social problem either from school, home or even from the society. Statistics have revealed that society plays a great role in castigating synthetic marijuana use among the youth in US. Many social evils and activities provides platform for youth to use the drug. The laxity in the society towards safeguarding the behaviours of the youth and disciplining them has led to spread of synthetic marijuana even in the states where it is banned. The role of society in shaping the youth and supporting them in US has been minimal. Few or no awareness has been enhanced in the US society to educate the youth on impact of using the drug (Bean 2009). The upbringing of the youths in harsh environment has ignited the urge to abuse the drug. The other stake holders in this vice among the young teens are the US government. The authorities are doing less to protect the youth from abusing the drug. Few or no rehabilitation centres, counselling centres and youth against drugs awareness programs have been initiated in the society by the government. Learning institutions in US has been the main market for synthetic marijuana among the youth. The drug has been associated with the prevalence in the act of bullying, sexual abuse, suicide and murder. This is mainly due to peer pressure among the students. The laxity of school in safeguarding the young people is the main concern. The youth become indiscipline and eventually violent (Gianni Devincenti Hayes 2011).
The questions answered in the survey of effects of synthetic marijuana and teens included; why do the young teens use synthetic marijuana? What are the effects of using the drug? What is the most prevalent violence associated with the drug in modern world among the youth? What are the causes of using the drug among the young teens? Who is to blame for the escalating rate of use of the synthetic marijuana among the young teens?
Use of synthetic marijuana by the teens can cause serious health conditions. Although the drug is banned in various states, its use is still prevalent. The survey was successful as the data collected was analysed and presented positive response from the people involved. Among the response it was clearly revealed that learning institutions were the main area where young teens are using the drug. Through implementing the prevention programs, this will aid in removing the vice. The research tackled the root cause of abuse of synthetic marijuana whereby if the issue is addressed and awareness created, this will help in solving the vice among the young teens.
