Analysing the growth of globalised crime

This essay is about the growth of globalised crime. In this society we have to deal with crime everywhere. Different kinds of crime, crime that can affect us all, crime that we sometimes can't deny. Unfortunately, crime is increasing around the globe. The crime scene has experienced a lot of opportunities because of the globalization. Where there used to be frontiers, both physical and otherwise, these days there is nothing to check the growth of crime. And so crime has made the world its marketplace. In this respect it is obvious that globalization isn't always a good thing. The world has become smaller; everyone can get information about anyone. This may be good for the business world, but where crime is involved it is posing a serious threat for society.

There is a question society has to ask itself: ''what effect does globalised crime have on the society?'' No matter how awful it sounds, we can't deny the fact that crime has globalized. With the world getting smaller and more accessible, being safe in it is getting more and more difficult.

So, let us take a look at some types of globalized crime, which have become an enormous problem. The crimes which have seen a huge growth over the last couple of years are: human trafficking, cybercrime, firearms trafficking and drugs dealing. Let's take a look at each of them individually.

Human Trafficking

When people think about human trafficking, they think about women. This is not true; also men get involved with human trafficking. Human trafficking is the transportation of persons. Most of the time, someone has the control over another. In modern society it is all about money. The main reasons for human trafficking are (child) labour or sexual exploitation. Around the world in more than 137 countries human trafficking is determined. These are only the reported situations, more than half of the human traffic crimes are not reported, so there will never be a final mark of how many people are victim of human trafficking. We can call it a real globalized phenomenon. Transnational organized crime is a well known notion in human trafficking, but also in the drugs trafficking and firearms trafficking. UNODC is an organization that helps countries to decrease the number of trafficking worldwide. With knowing this, we can say that with the world getting smaller (because of the globalization), more human trafficking will be established.

Cybercrime

Cybercrime is a burglary on your identity. It has grown since the internet made a major breakthrough. Because of the globalization, cybercrime increased rapidly. Internet is used by more than 50% of the whole population. So you can imagine how easy it is to get in contact with someone vulnerable. When we talk about cybercrime you can think about hacking, fraud and child pornography. It's more difficult with cybercrime than with human trafficking to say if it is organized or not. Most of the time the offenders are in groups of two up to ten persons. The technology is more accessible than it used to be. The offender can stay unknown while the victims' safety is violated. This causes commotion, insecurity, uncertainty and a restless feeling among society.

Trafficking of firearms

Trafficking of firearms is also a huge crime on global scale. Trafficking of firearms means weaponry moving from a legal place to an illegal place (country). Criminals move the firearms from country to country in many different ways. For example gun shows, unlicensed sellers sell their firearms to someone who is also unlicensed. All the guns that are produced used to be legal (because they have been made in a country where it is legal), but because of the fact that the weapons in question are not sold and bought through official government channels, this trade is an illegal one. The fact that there is such a thing as firearms trafficking makes society very scared.

Drug dealing

With millions of people worldwide addicted to one kind of drug or another, it has become increasingly more interesting for criminals to transport illegal drugs from their place of origin and sell them in an increasing drug-market. More often than not, this trade is connected to physical violence and murder between rival groups, and there is an enormous amount of money involved.

The above examples of crime are perhaps seen as the most typical for global organized crime. Many decades ago crime was of a different type, and was committed mostly on a local or at the most national scale. You couldn't speak of global organized crime. As an example, there were only a few Mafia families that took the lead in the crime scene in Italy and the US. Since the end of the cold war, governments have seen the importance of the increase of global organized crime. Also, the growth of international trade and the increasing technological possibilities have helped the possibilities of globalized crime. So that is why globalized crime is a serious problem.

There are many theories about crime. In one of the sociological theories scientists wonder if the cause for crime has anything to do with social structure. They also search for motivations offenders have when committing a crime. Scientists have found out that low income, practically no education, high unemployment and single parent households increase the chance of crimes being committed. Sigmund Freud is a scientist that developed the Psychoanalytic Theory. This theory claims that all humans have a certain drive for committing crime. He also says that this is

already acquired at a young age. He made different investigations with children at a young age. He thinks that people are born as a ''criminal'', and that people haven't learn it.

Another theory about crime is the Learning Theory. This theory claims that crime has everything to do with a person's behavior, something that is learned through consequences. For example: your income, social status and your property. Hans J. Eysenck was a psychologist who believed that crime has everything to do with your personality. He gave different examples: A person who smoked is stressed. That is probably someone who is able to commit a crime. It is a very straightforward thought.

The Constitional- Learning Theory is also a theory many people believe in. Scientists James Q. Wilson's and Richard J. Herrnstein's claimed that people commit a crime because of gains and losses. They think that if the security of the gains is bigger than the loss, people may commit a crime. They also believe that children who have small social ties and are very detached have a greater change to be a criminal when they get older.

We've seen that globalization is not always as nice as it seems. It definitely affects society. The economy is linked to each other and that is the cause for a ''globe-spanning network''. Criminals use this network for their own profit. This opens the eye for criminals. Also younger people will get involved in this crime scene so the number of committing crimes will increase. But with this increasing number the market for (for example) fake drugs will also increase. Those fake drugs (that people make, spread and use) might be the cause of AIDS and cancer. So now you can see that globalized crime could also affect people's health.

Also companies have to protect themselves against crimes, it is also called internet crimes or ''cyber-vulnerability'. Fraud, theft and corruption can be committed with minimal effort.

As a civilian, we notice in our daily lives the existence of organized crime too. We are getting used to having to protect ourselves on the Internet, by means of dozens of passwords and user names, the necessity of having a virus scanner and a spam filter has become common knowledge. Whenever we visit an ATM machine, we should be aware that maybe we are being watched by a clever device that has been installed in the ATM itself by ''clever'' criminals and which is "skimming" our credit card to get its details.

We know better than to walk around in certain parts of certain cities, because it is widely known that in these parts drug dealers are active.

When we take the train, a plain or any other means of public transport and we see a bag unattended, alarm bells go off in our heads because the authorities have warned us, it might contain a bomb...

But there is hope. The system is not "broken" by any of these activities. Most countries and nations are stronger than any known criminal organization. But it is clear that the growth of globalised crime affected our society. Not only on our feelings with being safe, but also our health. With human trafficking and drug dealing we increase the change of getting AIDS and other disabilities. We have to think twice when we have to make a decision. You can't leave your purse at a table in a restaurant, because it might be taken away by someone. These are all little examples but it shows how much the society has changed.
