The purpose of this research is to come up with a process of design which involves members from different genres of the industry including the occupants to approach zero carbon buildings together as a team and work on a project from conceptualisation till operation.

The integrated design involves a team in the process that includes the professionals such as an architect, technical planner, structural engineer, landscape designer, and service engineers. There would be pre-design sessions where everybody will put their ideas and come to a conclusion and then reconsider other possibilities which would lead to more efficient plans and designs.

Since every member is involved, the process would include options that will lessen in-efficiencies and material waste as well as saving time.

This concept differs from the typical planning process of approaching respective specialists; it encompasses highly collaborative thinking process from the expertise of the industry.

The aim of research would be constructing zero carbon buildings in a way giving full path to integrated design process which would in-turn contribute to awareness among occupants as how to operate the building in order to minimize the burden on the artificial energy, thus reducing the carbon footprint.

As all the aspect of the planning and designing are going side by side and as each stage gets approval from all the members of design it would lead to a better understanding of the elements of building design and construction process. Also if in-case any over lapse in the design may arise in near future especially during implementation of these, they would be solved in a very early stage. The research would possibly draw method line as to how designers, builders and engineers should be working from the primary stage to the implementation stage with an aim of considering all the factors of sustainability like orientation, space planning, kind of materials used, their life time assessment costs, maintenance and also the operation by the owner to maintain energy performance for the better results.

This way of working would help achieving energy saving in a building where the designer and builder intensify to increase the saving, improve the design so as to consider the energy efficiency at each stage of the development process i.e. from the beginning till the end

The benefits would be achieved by the following step-by-step activities that each member in a team should follow:

Conceptualisation --- Design --- Implementation --- Construction --- Operation

To sum it up, my area of research will be to understand;

what IDP is and how it is different from traditional approaches;

the benefits of IDP in achieving a zero carbon buildings

Initial literature review

While going through the journals and books for doing literature review to understand the topic clearly I came across two very interesting books which will possibly help me in understanding the subject in a detailed way and few books which contributed to my thought process were:

Green building through integrated design project

The author explains with examples of high performance project (LEED platinum level) through participants working together to achieve the outcomes and has come up with a conclusion that it is difficult to achieve high level outcomes without some form of integrated process. The author interviewed a leading proponent of integrated design, a Boston-based architect William G. Reed who is being attributed with being one of the co-authors of the United State Green building council's leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system (LEED) generally used in countries like America, India, and other Asian countries. Reed firmly believes and has been intensively making people aware for the integrative design process as a way of not just producing green building but building and sites that are actually restorative in process.

Reed explains, the objective of all green building efforts is to build high-performance buildings at or close to conventional budgets and he believes integrated design is the only way of achieving the goal.

In his interview Bill Reed says "it is very easy to implement the integrative design process but you have to have a design team and clients that are willing to change the nature of their design process it's not hard but it's different but he says it is all about change and it really depends upon how willing the people are to begin a change process"

According to the book the integrative design is simple, doing research-applied and direct research and coming together and talking about the discovered opportunities then you look for greater systems optimization

The design process gets completely clear with few case studies in which the author has tried to explain how things work in reality. He has explained very clearly how the process of design should be step by step and how a functional team is created that investigates and reports back and at the beginning of the project. 3 - 5 meetings in which all members of team draft a solution to a design problem. In first meeting an outline is drawn and so that every member of the team get to know what their function is and what design issue they have to tackle and how many more meeting sessions they have to attend, by this way each member of the team are on the project rite since very begging and they write a detailed proposal which help the client and other team members to understand what they proposing.

This helps to get everybody on the same platform and each member of the team is aware of the design and each member of the team contributes to the thinking process of each other and in such meetings critical appreciation from the members is very fruitful in improving the designs and solving the design issue.

In this book the author has shared the perspective of all members of the construction industry from an architect to engineer to a builder on the integrated design process.

And good number of modern green building have been explained in this book and their experiences of the integrated designs

Jerry Yuldson has clearly mentioned in his book what integrated design process is with the perspective from the architects and engineers and builders and then he has explained the practice of integration

A good picture is given of what integrated design with reference of modern green buildings and how it is practiced.

I really like the kind of work done by Jerry, the way idea has been incorporated and perspectives of the people who had real experience in integrated process.

The advance guide for small retail buildings

developed by (American society of Heating, refrigeration and air conditioning Engineers, the American institute of Architects, US Green Building Council, US Department of Energy)

Intends to provide a simple approach for contractors and designers who create small retail buildings,this guide contains recommendation which are not minimum but can be used in additional to the national codes and standards which will help to achive 30% more energy savings

Autodesk white papers

Autodesk truly believes in Integrated design process and while speaking to one of their employee I got to know about the journal in which they speak about the IPD.

I was suggested to read the paper inorder to have a knowledge about the IPD in their perspective. The white paper Autodesk examines IPD and considers its impact on the building industry and also how B.I.M contributes to integrated design process. This presents a brief overview of IPD, it reflects on how come out with the curent challenges faced by the industry and put forward the perspective of the people who are closely related to the industry like architect,owner and contactor.

The paper includes a close observation on the way the technologies which particularly support B.I.M will help making significant changes in the way the industry works.

In this journal ideas of American institue of architects process also contributed with their ideas on IPD. The AIA define IPD as

The paper explains the reason why people are adopting the IPD and what is drifting the construction industry to the direction of integrated design process.

The paper also mentions IPD in practice and explains it as reliance on knowledge Integration . The journal helped me to understand that IPD is a highly collaborative process that demands expertise from all walks of the indusrty including designers, builders, subcontractors and owners through the whole process of construction from conceptual stage to implimentation but the results will be much higher if the collaborative expertise is higher and much more cooperative during the design process.

Integrated design process guide

Alex Zimmerman, president of Canada green building council has been in a close relation with the working of industry, he has explained IPD in a very detailed nammer from what it is to the objections raised by the people.

The author explains the advantages of IPD, providing enough information to start applying to the project, he assures that if the article is read carefully a more awareness about the subject will be raised which would lead to better understanding of IPD and how different it is from the conventional one even though there is nothing new it is just the change of approach and the benefits.

The author describes IPD as intentional way of approaching sustainble buildings and community design that offers much higher likelyhood of success than other approcahes. He explains perspectives of different practitioners based on their experience and practice and come up with the common elements to every definitions like goal driven, inclusive, structured, clear decision making.

In the journal, the author has provided in detail, the motivation and the goal behind IPD giving a good credit to the sustainable approach and assures the right approach towards achieving green building rating system is IPD.

The author continues with a new topic explaining how IPD is different, he catagorises the process in differnet stages and explains in detail about it and how and when it involves professsionals. The offers finnaly conclude with the objection to IPD and states 5 objection that are usually raised by the people of the industry


In order to understand the problem that current building industry faces, I will read journals, papers, internet sources and feedback of people.

I will do case studies of few buildings which are constructed through IPD and would get statistical details about the operational savings, efficiency in design, better management of time and reduction of material waste.

For the insider's perspective, I would interview professionals who believe in IPD and why did they choose it over conventional type, why they believe it to be better option.

Possible outcome of integrated design process

IPD will identify the problem at the early stage and will lead to removal of uncertainties hence saving material wastage and lead to energy efficient buildings

It will provide greater certainties of the design co-ordination as much of the uncertainties that occur during the design stages are resolved at the initial stages and that lead to significant benefits.

It offers a better design and understands the priorities which are often neglected otherwise due to immense self prioritized duties and ego clashes between different members of the industry.

Collaboration between the design member team as IPD formulates the path way in which the members of the team know when and how they have to work collaboratively and when they can work independently.

IPD will help to focus on task completion more effectively as it involves a better management system.

It furthers the self policing design team the members understand the centre of their work and they can work together to deliver the project fast and efficient.
