Windows is a Graphical User Interface operating system. It was introduced as an add on to MS-DOS. A Microsoft window is known for the most user friendly environment. The company Microsoft has been creating the windows operating system since November 1989 and launched a newer version every year or so.

Earlier versions were windows 1.0 , windows 2.0 and after every short period of time a new operating system has been launched by the Microsoft resulting in making Microsoft 91% share holder of the market of the client operating systems for the usage of internet.

One of the latest operating system by Microsoft is Windows 7. Microsoft claims this version to be the newest yet easiest operating system in the world. It provides vast features for the home users as well as the business users all over the globe.

Some of the new features include TV recording, easy home networking, a selection between 35 languages to modify windows operating system according to the language.

Windows operating system is not open source operating system. It cannot be modified by the user (having knowledge about software) according to his needs. On the contrary of this there exists an operating system, Linux (an open source operating system) whose source can be changed by the user according to his need.

Linux

Linux is an operating system that was initially created as a hobby by a young student, Linus Torvalds, at the University of Helsinki in Finland. In 1991 a version 0.02 was released of the Linux Kernel. The Linux kernel is used by the Linux family of which the source is free to change by any user in the world. This operating system is free of cost and can be easily downloaded from the internet and modify respectively. This operating system stands contrary to the Microsoft Windows operating system and both have a silent rivalry.

Linux is globally recognized for the server platform. The operating system can also be incorporated directly into microchips in a process called "embedding" and is increasingly being used this way in appliances and devices.

The Linux operating system is used for the general purpose use on desktop and servers, it has specialized distributions in computer architecture support, embedded systems, stability, security , localization to a specific region or language, support of real time applications.

The Linux operating system is being used widely for the server operating system and has raised the level reported by the Netcraft in 2006, that eight out of ten internet hosting companies run Linux distributions on their web servers. Linux distributions are also used as the operating system for the mainframes and supercomputers. Linux was also used as the operating system of the world's most powerful operating system IBM's "Sequoia".

Mac OS

Mac OS is the trademark name for the series of GUI based OS developed by the company Apple for their computer systems Macintosh. The early versions of Mac OS were divided into two pieces: System and Finder. The Mac OS has been divided into two classes: The Mac Os classic and Mac Os a fusion of the classic Mac Os and Nexstep. The classic Os lacks a command line and is totally GUI based.

The Macintosh originally uses the Macintosh File System (MFS), a system with only one level of folders. Then came the Hierarchical File System (HFS) which replaced this problem using the tree structure for the files and folders.

Windows CE

Microsoft Windows also known as Windows Embedded Compact or Windows Embedded CE is an windows OS designed specifically for mini computers and embedded devices such as palmtops. It was first released in 1996 to compete in the Palm Device Assistant Category.

This OS is similar looking to desktop windows and has similar applications such as Pocket Excel, Pocket Excel, Pocket Word and Pocket Power. Windows CE is designed for the devices that have the minimal storage. Windows CE has evolved over the past decade and is no longer only for hand held computers.

The applications for the Windows CE can be designed using Microsoft Visual Studio. The newer versions of the OS include the USB Function Driver. It allows the user to change on the loaded profile. It can be used as Mass storage device.

The Windows CE is also used in Car Navigation devices, also supporting aerial navigation. The Windows CE used in navigation devices connects the devices to the online services such as Bluetooth capable mobile phones, Windows based PCs and the internet. Windows CE provides location awareness and connects to other devices to make hands free phone calls, stream music and exchange data on a faster speed. The latest feature of Windows CE in embedded devices is Hands free profile to make and receive hands-free voice calls with paired mobile phones. Audio/video remote control profile: helps enable a paired multimedia control device such as in-car stereo to control audio video playback.

Symbian

Symbian is an OS designed for the mobile devices and smart phones with associated libraries, user interface frameworks and references developed by Symbian Ltd.

In 2008 the Symbian Software Limited was acquired by Nokia. Symbian is the world's most popular mobile operating system.

Symbian features pre-emptive multitasking and memory protection. The Symbian uses a microkernel which has a request and callback approach to service and maintains separation between user interface and engine.

The Symbian OS is being used globally by many companies for the mobile edition of their OS. Apple uses for iPhone OS, Microsoft uses in windows CE and Windows mobile.
