Apple I-Phone is the most famous phone used by people now a day. In this paper we discussed all the factors that made iPhone so successful. Factors include the hardware, operating system and the user interface used in the iPhone which made it so popular. This paper also covers the technology used in the iPhone in different generations and explains different upgraded features in the latest versions. This paper explains the concept of App Store and the process of application developers to working on iPhone platform. Views of other competitors on iPhone success are mentioned. And finally we conclude our paper by giving a brief explanation on how the factors we covered in our paper made iPhone so successful.


Apple I-Phone is a smart phone launched by the Apple Inc. It is a multimedia enabled phone with line of internet. On 9th of January 2007 a new era has begun in mobile technology, the iPhone was launched by Apple Inc. Since then its successful run made it to release total four generations of iPhone with improved technology in each new version which also increased its popularity.These four generations are accompanied of four major releases of iOS.

The first phone was basically a G.S.M phone which came new screen size and buttons. The next generation launched is 3.G. this has 3.G cellular network systems with A-G.P.S location. The next generation is 3G.S. this added more features to the old generation, the added features are a camera with higher resolution, more processor speed, a compass and video features. The latest generation is I-Phone 4 with additional features such as, two cameras for video calling and with high screen resolution.


The idea of developing I-Phone was begin with C.E.O Steve Job's direction that Apple technical staff to work on touch screen I-Phone original was introduced 9th January, 2007. The I-Phone original was available for sale in U.S, U.K, France, Germany, Ireland, Australia. Apple released I-Phone 3.G on 11th July, 2008 in 22 countries including the above mentioned six countries.

To gain a wide market Apple retained 8G.B I-Phone 3G at a lower prices. These phones are sold up to 6.1 million and this had increased to 73.5 million by 2010. It is expected that Apple has 4% share in cell phone market. The phone attracts customers of all age groups and also for business purposes.

Apple i.O.S didn't have a official name at the first until its software development kit was developed. The software development kit was developed on March 6th, 2008. The first and only update available to the public is i.O.S 4.2 on November 18th, 2010. The next update was i.O.S 4.2.1 to reduce the defects of the previous version. This was introduced on November 22nd , 2010.

I-Phone has a wide screen than all other phones in the market. The screen is a touch screen and of 9c.m long that is 3.5 inches. It is a liquid crystal display with a glass which is scratch resistant. The screen resolution of previous generations is 320X480 at 163p.p.i and for I-Phone 4 is 640X960 at 326p.p.i.

The touch screen technology was developed originally by FingerWorks. I-Phone uses capacitive styli for operating the touch screen. Now the I-Phone 3G.S provides finger print resistant oleophobic coating. The phone display responses to three sensors. During a phone call the display and touch screen is deactivated by the proximity sensor. This is done to save the battery and pressing any key during a call. Display brightness is adjusted by the ambient light sensors. This is done intern to save the battery. To easily switch between landscape mode and portrait made it uses a 3-axis accelerometer.

It has 4-5 buttons for input. They are Home Button below the display to close the app's page, volume button to control the volume, sleep-awake button which is a multipurpose button acts as unit power button and controls calls. This is located at the top.


At the bottom of the phone there is a speaker on the left side and a microphone is located at the right side. There is a loudspeaker at the top as a earpiece and at the left side of the bottom there is other earpiece. For the I-Phone there is another microphone at the top for noise cancellation.

The headphones of I-Phone are provided with additional features. A multipurpose near the microphone is used to play music and also to answer phone calls without using the touch screen. New headset is also designed which has volume control buttons also.

The phone provides composite video up to 576i and stereo audio output from a dock connector using an adopter. Only the adopters sold by Apple can be used. Via a dock connector the I-Phone 4 can support 1024X786 V.G.A output. There is a inbuilt Bluetooth 2.X+E.R.D which supports wireless headphones and earpieces, but this requires H.S.P profile.


It has a internal rechargeable battery. This battery can be charged using a U.S.B through a pc or by the normal charge provided with the phone that is wall charger. The battery is not user replaceable like all other phones. The original I-Phone battery can provide 7 hours video, 6 hours browsing, 8 hours of talk time, twenty four hours music and 250 hours standby. This increases with generations. The 3G.S provides 10 hours of video, 9 hours of browsing on Wi-Fi and 5 on 3G, 12 hours of 2G and 5 hours on 3G talk time, 30 hours of music and 300 hours of standby.


Inbuilt 2.0 megapixel with fixed focused camera is provided with the original and the 3G I-Phone. This is located at the back side for taking photos. This has no flash, optical zoom, autofocus and does not support video recording. 3.2 megapixel camera is designed in the I-Phone 3G.S. This has autofocus, auto white balance, and auto macro. In this the video can be cropped and directly uploaded to the You Tube. The I-Phone has 5.0 megapixel camera. It has two cameras, one at the front and one at the back. Since it has camera at the front also it provides video calling. The front camera is a V.G.A camera. It has a flash also.


The I-Phone initially designed 4G.B and 8G.B memory storage. Later it stopped 4G.B storage phone and launched the 16G.B memory phone on 5th February, 2008. The 8G.B and 16G.B are available with 3G phone. The 3G.S phone is available with 16G.B and 32G.B storage. The phone does not support any external storage like memory card, all the data is stored in internal flash drive.

The sim is fitted in to a tray and inserted in to a slot at the top of the phone. The sim can be ejected by a eject tool. The phone comes with a sim lock in most of the countries. This is done to avoid phone been used in different networks. The I-Phone 4 comes with a micro-sim that is located at the right side in a slot.


The I-Phone is provided with a liquid contact indicators. This is basically in white colour, when the device comes into contact with liquid the colour changes to red colour. From this we can find that the device is in contact with water and we can protect it from damage. This indicator of the phone has a small disc at the bottom of the headphone jack. The 3G and latest phones have one more at the bottom of dock connector.

Apple employees use these indicators to find out that the device qualifies for a warranty or replacement. When the indicator shows the device is in contact with water, they find out that device is not covered by Apple. This phone exposes the indicators directly to the environment. But this caused few problems, the might be affected with steam in bathrooms and moisture in the atmosphere. Due to this they provided a choice to the customers that they can have more inspection of phone to check internal liquid damage sensors were set off on request.



This is the home screen. The home screen is list of all available applications shown graphically. Like all other phones all applications run only one at a time. There is a hardware button at the bottom of the screen which is used to access the home screen at any time. The home screen contains the default applications as shown in the figure.

Mostly the input is given by the touch screen, this understands gestures with multiple touch. The interface technology allows the user to move up and down by their figure movements up and down. The interface include horizontally sliding sub-selection, vertically sliding keyboard and bookmark menu. There is a back button at the top in the left corner of the screen used to display the parent folder name.

The phone offers call waiting, call audio conferencing, call merging, callers I.D. The phones before the 4th generation does not support video conferencing or video calling. This is because they have only one camera. The I-Phone 4 provides this as it has camera at the front also. The phone also has visual voicemails provided only in few countries. This will give a list of voicemail messages without call going to the voicemail. There is a music ringtone available. Through this the users can compose ringtones from the songs purchased from the i-tunes store. This music can be of three to thirty seconds long taken from any part of the song. All this can be done in i-tunes.

The phone sorts the media library by artist, songs, playlist, albums, videos, audiobooks, podcast. By swiping the finger across the screen we can achieve scrolling. An alternative to this the headset controllers can be used for play, pause, repeat, skip tracks. Volume can be changed with the Apple headphones. For identifying a particular track, for playing the songs in the playlist, for specifying artist, and creating a playlist voice control feature can be used.

I-Phone can play digital video like the 5th generation i-Pods launched in 2005. This allows the users to watch TV and movies in a wide screen. iTunes stores is used to download songs and videos to the phone. We need wi-fi to do this, but now if wi-fi is not available we can use cellular data network can be used.


Local wi-fi, wide area G.S.M or E.D.G.E network must be connected to the I-Phone in order to have internet access. 3rd generation U.M.T.S and H.S.D.P.A-3.6 network is used by the I-Phone 3G. H.S.D.P.A-7.2 is used for I-Phone 3G.S and the I-Phone 4. I-Phone will ask u to join the newly discovered wi-fi network and ask for a password by default. Manually it can join closed wi-fi network alternately. When strong connecting wi-fi network is available then, the phone will automatically prefers it rather than E.D.G.E. There is a mode called airplane mode, which will disable all wireless connections at once, overriding other preferences. When the cellular network is off, one can enable wi-fi and/or Bluetooth modes to join and continue to operate one or both these network in airplane mode.

Internet can be accessed by the I-Phone users frequently, and in many places. In 2008 according to Google fifty times more search requests are done with I-Phone than all other phones. The average internet usage for I-Phone user is more than 100M.B according to Deutsche Telekom C.E.O Rene Obermann. This contributes about thirty times the use for our average contract based users.


A virtual keyboard on the touch screen is used for text input. Automatic spell checking and correction, predictive word capabilities, dynamic dictionary for learning new words are available with this phone. The phone can detect what word the user want to type before itself and completes it and also correct any accidental pressing of the keys which is close to the wanted key. The keyboard can accommodate twenty-one languages, including Chinese character recognisation. Cut, copy ,pasting text and landscape keyboards in more applications is updated in 3.0.


Features like e-mail program supporting H.T.M.L e-mail is available with the phone. This enables the customer to embed photos in an e-mail. On the phone P.D.F, Word, Excel, PowerPoint attachments can be read. Push e-mail is offered in this phone through Apple's MobileMe platform. Free push e-mail is offered in this phone by Yahoo!. This phone will sync e-mail account settings from Apple's own Mail application, Microsoft outlook, Microsoft Entourage or manual configuration on the device itself can be done. The e-mail can access almost any I.M.A.P or P.O.P3 account with correct settings on this phone.

Similar to the Mail, text messages are presented in the mailbox. This will place all text from recipients together with replies. Similar to iChat text messages are displayed in speecg bubbles under each recipient name. E-mail message forwarding, drafts, and direct camera to e-mail picture sending is in-built in the phone. Multi-recipient S.M.S support was added to the phone in the 1.1.3 software update. MMS support was added in 3.0 update.
