My name is Gan Li Seng. I am 17 years old. I live in Taman Universiti, Skudai. I am studying Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) at Olympia College, Johor Bahru since May of this year, 2011. The computer I used to make this assignment is my laptop--Acer Aspire 4750G. The specification of my laptop is Intel® Coreâ„¢ i5-2410M 2.3GHz with Turbo Boost up to2.9GHz as my computer's processor. Its graphics card with NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 520M, up to 2738MB Turbo Cacheâ„¢ (1GB). The screen of 14.0″ HD LED LCD and HD webcam build-in. Besides that, its RAM with 4GB DDR 3 memory and 500 GB of hard drive's capacity. DVD-Super Multi DL drive and 6-cell Li-ion battery are also the device which it contains. Windows edition with genuine Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit OS).

Assignment of Information Technology [IT 201A(08)], which is the first assignment I work on it in this semester 1. Although it seem like the first challenge for me, but it is not quite tough to me. This is because my lecturer, Ms. Norzila had already guided me a lot for doing it. Before I start, I am grateful and I would like to thank her for her instruction. Now, let us move to the section of briefing the question.

First of all, the question one is ask for the defining and describing the types of peripheral devices from all components include with its examples. The peripheral device means an electronic equipment which connected or attached by cable to the host computer (central processing unit-CPU). So that, after explaining the devices, giving some examples on it. The input and output devices of computer's components can be put in to answer this question.

After answered the question one, move on to question two. Question two is regarding the types of storing devices and its storage for various types of users to use it. Storing device is use to keep or save data, information, and instructions for future use. So that, the different types of users will preferred different types of storing devices for them to store their data documents. List out the types of users and their preferred devices. Then, make a explanation for it to answer the question two.

2.0 CONTENTS -Question 1

2.1 Desktop System Unit :

-known as personal computer or tower model. Usually used in home condition or a place which can place it suitably (a fixed location). Refer to Figure 3 and Figure 4.

2.1.1 Pointing Device :

-provide a comfortable interface with system unit by accepting pointing gesture and convert it into digital input.

Mechanical mouse

-a traditional type and widely used before optical mouse. It has a ball on the bottom and attached with a cord to system unit. As the mouse move across a smooth surface, the roller rotate and control the pointer on the screen. Refer to Figure 7 and Figure 8.

Optical mouse

-has no moving parts. It emits and senses light to detect mouse movement. More precise, does not require periodic cleaning and can be used on any surface. Refer to Figure 9 and Figure 10.

Wireless mouse

-a battery-powered device with radio wave or infrared light wave to connect with system unit. Eliminate mouse cord and free up some space. Refer to Figure 11 and Figure 12.

-Known as roller ball, to control pointer by rotating a ball with thumb (similar to a mouse's function). Refer to Figure 13 and Figure 14.

Pointing stick

-located in middle of keyboard (typing device in 2.1.2), to control pointer by directing the stick with finger. Refer to Figure 15, Figure 16 and Figure 17.

-most popular input device for computer games. It can control game actions by varying direction, speed, and pressure of joystick. It also contain some button and triggers as additional controls for specify commands or initiate specific animation.

2.1.2 Typing Device :

-known as most common data inputter to the system unit. It convert letters, numbers, and special characters that people understand into digital (electrical signals that system unit's understanding digits). Refer to Figure 20 and Figure 21.

Traditional keyboard

-full-sized, rigid, rectangular keyboard with PS/2 connector that included direction, function, normal, numeric, and special keys. Refer to Figure 22 and Figure 23.

Optical keyboard

-actually majority of it is the same design as the traditional one, but the only different between them is the cable that connected the keyboard with system unit replace by Universal Serial Bus (USB). Refer to Figure 24 and Figure 25.

Ergonomic keyboard

-similar to traditional keyboards. Although that, this ergonomic keyboard is not in the shape rectangular, because it provides palm rest for user to place their palm there when typing. Refer to Figure 26 and Figure 27.

Wireless keyboard

-transmit input to system unit through air. Provide greater convenience and flexibility than the traditional one. Refer to Figure 28 and Figure 29.

Flexible keyboard

-can be fold or roll up for easy keeping or packing up. Designed for mobile users with minimal storage requirement to use a full-sized keyboard instead of using a rigid one. Refer to Figure 30 and Figure 31.

2.1.3 Screen Displayer :

-known as monitor. It is a kind of output device like television screen that displays data processed by system unit. Refer the examples at Figure 32 and Figure 33

Cathode-ray tubes (CRT) monitor

-a traditional desktop-type monitor tor build in the same way as a television set. Usually being used in home or office before flat-panel monitor comes out in the market. Refer to Figure 34, Figure 35 and Figure 36.

Flat-panel monitor

-known as liquid crystal display (LCD). It is much thinner than CRT monitor and can be used for desktop system too. Refer to Figure 37 and Figure 38.

Tablet-pc monitor

-a type of desktop monitor that accepts handwritten data, by using finger or stylus, that is converted to standard text and can be processed by word processor program. Two original categories are convertible and slate. Refer to Figure 39 and Figure 40.

High-definition television (HDTV)

-known as plasma television. It is an all-digital television that delivers more detailed and clearer widescreen picture in the screen. It can connect with system unit by cable.

E-book reader

-become more latest and popular nowadays. It is a portable electronic device which is designed for the purpose of reading digital books or periodicals. It can also connected with system unit by using cable. Refer to Figure 43 and Figure 44.

2.2 Notebook (System Unit) :

-known as laptop. Its size is much smaller than a desktop PC, portable and its monitor had already attached with hinges to system unit. Refer to Figure 45 and Figure 46

2.2.1 Audio Device :

-it translate audio information from computer into analog information which is the sound that people can understand to it. It is needed to have a sound card in system unit to function it better.

Speaker unit

-a box of electro-acoustic transducer that converts digital electrical signals into a loud sounds which can be heard from a far distance. Refer to Figure 47 and Figure 48.

-known as earphone or earpiece. Its function is majority similar to the speaker unit, but it is commonly being used for hold over the ears or insert into them. It can prevent and avoid from disturbing others when entertaining alone. On the other hand, it can also protect privacy of oneself when listening some personal's voice message.

-known as mike. This device can converts sound waves into digital electrical signals for understanding of system unit. Refer to Figure 51 and Figure 52.

Portable music player

-well known as MP3, MP4 and MP5(latest). Handy and pocket-sized Walkman (portable music device) which can install music in it for entertaining while doing something else.

2.2.2 Video Device :

-a device that connected with system unit by assisting of graphics card (video card). After graphics card convert internal electronic signals to video signal, so that these devices can function on the screen clearly.


-a specialized digital video camera for capturing images and broadcasting to Internet. Refer examples at Figure 55 and Figure 56.

Camera phone (multimedia smart phone)

-known as pocket video taker. It can used as an ordinary cell phone as well as a portable video camera when taking video.

-similar to traditional camera except that the image are recorded digitally in camera's memory, but not on the film.

-There are still many types of peripheral devices, let us move on to them.

2.3.1 Printer :

-it is a device that produces printed paper as output.

Ink-jet printer

-a printer that sprays tiny droplets of ink at high rate onto the paper's surface, produce letter-quality images, and can print in color. Refer to Figure 63 and Figure 64.

Laser printer

-a printer that creates dot-like images on a drum by using a laser beam light source.

Photo printer

-a special ink-jet printer which designed for print out photos or images from digital camera. Refer to Figure 67 and Figure 68.

Portable printer

Dot-matrix printer

-a type of printer that forms characters or images by using a series of tiny pins on a print head. It will produced a low quality output. Refer to Figure 71 and Figure 72.

2.3.2 Scanner Device :

-it convert scanned text and image into form of system unit's understanding digits. There are some types of scanners :

Flatbed scanner

-an input device which has the function similar to the copying machine. Refer to Figure 73 and Figure 74.

Portable scanner

-a handy device that slides across an image to be scanned, makes it a direct contact.

Bar code reader

-a photoelectric scanner which reads bar codes for processing it. Usually used in library. Refer to Figure 77 and Figure 78.

Magnetic card reader

-a card reader that can reads encoded information from magnetic strip which is at the back of the card. Usually used supermarket which have credit card service. Refer to Figure 79 and Figure 80.

Optical-character recognition (OCR)

-a scanning device that using special preprinted characters which can be read by light source and changed it into machine readable codes. Usually used on the utility bill. Refer to Figure 81 and Figure 82.

Optical-mark recognition (OMR)

-a device which senses for presence or absence of mark. Usually used in mark sensing and score multiple-choice test. Refer to Figure 83 and Figure 84.

3.0 CONTENTS -Question 2

3.1 Storage device :

-a hardware that used to read or write data and programs from storage medium. It can be divided into two kind of main source, which is :

3.1.1 Primary Storage (Volatile) :

-It holds data and program instructions for process the data. It hold processed information before it become output.

For example, memory chips like RAM, ROM, and CMOS. These memory are contained on chips which connected to system unit. After processed data, the information will be transfer to secondary storage.

3.1.2 Secondary Storage (Nonvolatile) :

-These kinds of storing device is permanent storage which use to preserve data and programs after closing the system unit when the computer turn on once again, the data will still in the storage.

For example, floppy disks, hard disks, compact disks(CDs), digital video disks(DVDs), and magnetic tape. It usually used to save, backup or transport files from a location to one another.

3.2 Home User :

Users: Family members, sharing computer unit with different account.

Purpose : Children - keep education learning materials, and information from internet.

Parents - keep work project, entertainment program and important data.

Preferred & requirement of storage devices :

Optical disc drive with rewriteable compact disc (CD-RW) - 700MB

DVD drive with rewriteable digital versatile disc (DVD-RW) - 4.7GB

Purpose : Businessmen - store business data, keep purchase order forms and so-on.

3.6 Power User :

User: Graphics designer, need a lot of storage for work needed.

Purpose : store animation and data as produce a new movie or game.

Last but not least, as long as the time passed by, technology today had become a needed in this world which cannot be replace by others. The knowledge of using information technology is one of the minimum requirement when applying for a vacancy. Besides that, one's who equip him/herself with it (computer skills) will make their life become more easily with help of computer.

In this assignment, the peripheral devices, components and the storage devices were discussed because they are important for a system unit. By upgrading the components of computer device will increase the processing rate and effectiveness of a system unit. So that, the computer can process more fast with the assisting of high-performance components. However, data and information which is important can be keep and store with storage devices. Through the help of computer, life will be made easier.

Before I end my assignment, I want to thank my lecturer, Ms. Norzila once again for her guidance. Although I used up a lot of my time for doing this assignment, I am feeling great when doing this. This is because I learn a lot regarding how a computer work, with this knowledge, I can be more confident when the next presentation of this subject.
