In this document I am going to evaluate weather or not virus protection, firewalls, clean up tools, and drive formatting can improve the performance of a computer system.

Virus protection

A virus is a piece of software which is designed to spread from one area of your computer to another. Viruses have many different purposes. Some of these are to delete and corrupt data, and also to erase hard drives. The main ways viruses are spread are by attachments in emails, and also by internet downloads. Viruses can now also be used to hack your personal information such as bank details. There are several ways in which you can protect your computer system against viruses; however the main way is to use antivirus software. Antivirus software is software used to prevent, detect and remove viruses and malicious software from your computer system. Antivirus software can also be used to remove Trojans, worms, adware and also spyware. Worms, viruses and Trojans all slow down your computer system dramatically. This is why it's a great idea to use antivirus software as it does more than just remove all types of viruses, worms and Trojans; it also is used to keep your pc running as fast as it should be. However there is some antivirus software packages which also slow down your computer system, this is why if you want your computer to run as fast as it should you will need to invest in good quality antivirus software. In the pervious sentence I have used the word invest as many top of the market antivirus software's now cost you money. You can also protect your computer from viruses by not opening emails which attachments from unknown users, and by scanning all incoming emails to check for viruses. Overall having good antivirus protection on your computer will improve the performance of your computer. It will improve the performance by speeding up the computer system dramatically; it will do this by removing all viruses, Trojans and worms enabling your computer to work at a much faster rate.

Disk defragmentation is an essential part of regular computer maintenance. Disk defragmentation is a program which is included in a standard windows operating system; it is a process that maximises empty space on your computer system. Disk defragmentation is necessary when files are crated, modified and deleted as the files then become fragmented. This means that the files are not stored in one place. For example different parts of files are stored in different areas of the computer system. If lots of files are stored in different place this means the drive heads have to find all the different pieces of the files, this causes the performance, speed and reliability of the system to suffer tremendously. The aim of disk defragmentation utility is to recognise fragmented files and reorder them so that space on the system is maximised to increase the speed, reliability, and performance of the hard drive, this also means there is less strain on the computer processors. Disk defragmentation is a very quick process and has many useful benefits. Disk defragmentation can seriously help the running of your computer in many ways. Some of these ways include increasing speeding up your computer system, and improving the reliability, and performance of your computer system. Defragmentation also helps prevent wear and tear of your computer hard drive, which in turn will prolong the life of your computer. Defragmentation can also make frequently used programs run a lot faster than before. Disk defragmentation normally takes in the region of 30 minutes to complete, however hard drives which have not been defragmented in a long time and are very fragmented and are used lots can take several hours to defragment, and for this the user may wish to leave the computer overnight so that it doesn't interfere with the user's regular usage.

Removal of cookies

Cookies are small portions of files which are stored on the user's computer; they are stored on the computer when the user views a webpage. Not all websites have cookies. Cookies are stored when webpages are viewed, and normally are destroyed when the current web browser is closed. The use of cookies allows website owners to track what you are viewing. Cookies are also used, as when you view a webpage the data which is needed for that webpage to load is saved, meaning if you open the webpage again the webpage should open a lot faster. If cookies are left stored in the browser for long periods of time they begin to mount up, this affects the performance of the computer system and the web browser by slowing it down. Removal of cookies is what is then needed to speed and increase the performance of the computer and the web browser.

Removal of internet history

Internet history is basically a storage place within the internet explorer which stores all information about webpages which have been viewed at different times. Internet explorer stores all webpages viewed into internet history which is then sorted into days, Internet history can be used if the user wants to go back to a specific page they have previously viewed. This is a very useful utility, however if many weeks of internet history is stored in your internet explorer at any one time, this may dramatically slow down performance of your computer system. Therefore the removal of internet history will improve the performance of you computer system by freeing un-needed space and not saving any un-needed files to the history, meaning the computer system will dramatically improve in speed and overall performance.

Disk formatting

Disk formatting refers to removal of all data from your hard disk. The main use of disk formatting is when users want to prepare their hard disk for a fresh operating system. During disk formatting the disk is basically wiped clean, meaning all files and errors, including viruses are removed, also during disk formatting all file tables are rewritten. Disk formatting is the main way to clean up a computer system. Disk formatting is a great utility to use and can improve the general performance of your computer, in the means of the computer running at a much faster rate than before disk formatting. Disk formatting speeds up your computer system by removing all programs and files, this maybe seen as a bad thing however if before disk formatting is done you back up all files needed, when disk formatting is done you will have lost all files and software you do not need, which in turn would have been slowing down you computer system. Disk formatting also speeds up your computer by removing and errors such as viruses, worms and Trojans. These are again un-necessary and unwanted on your computer system so once disk formatting is done, your computer system will be much faster than before. ICT experts recommend that you format your disk drive once or more every year, as this will again help the performance and speed of your computer system. Some tips before formatting you disk drive are to back up all files and software needed, so this can be reloaded onto the much faster disk drive after the disk has been formatted. To format your dick drive you will need to make sure you have the correct operating dick that you want to install back onto your computer system after your dick drive has been formatted.

A firewall

A firewall is a piece of both software and hardware which protects networks from hackers and unauthorised users from accessing private networks while allowing authorised users to access the network. A firewall is a device which works by closing ports which you is not currently using protecting you from hackers. A port is a basically a service which is available for you to use. There are many ports (services) available for users to use. The most common ports are World Wide Web port and incoming and outgoing email ports. If you don't close the ports you are not using at the current time hackers can access your computer through the open ports not being used. A firewall has many benefits to your computer system. Some of these benefits include alerting the user about any suspicious material entering the computer. It also alerts the user about when a hacker has hit the firewall, allowing the user to be warned about the attack. There are many different types of firewalls available, some are better than others for example windows comes pre installed with a firewall however other firewalls also warn you of out going traffic that is suspicious. Windows firewall does not do this. There are many types of firewalls; however the two main types are hardware and software. A hardware firewall is used for a large network of computers. A hardware firewall is implemented in the router. And sit between your computers and the outside world. A software firewall is one which you install into your computer system which is used to hide open ports, and detect incoming attacks. You are able to have double protection by implementing both hardware and software firewalls. Hardware firewalls are usually more expensive and harder to configure than software firewalls. From the main two types of firewalls there are also a few more specialised firewalls these are packet filter and proxy server. Packet filter is where each packet of data which passes through the network is inspected and either accepted or rejected on the basis of a set of rule. Packet filters are quite hard to configure. A proxy server is a device which intercepts all messages entering and leaving the network. A firewall dramatically improves the speed of your computer by blocking out hackers, and other malicious viruses.
