Actor: Nurse Station System. The Nurse station system which is the central control of the whole patient monitoring system in that it is the point of connection between the on call staff, the consultants and the bedside monitoring system. It is the nurse station system that handles the registration and deregistration of the on call staff. The nurse station system also handles the registration and deregistration of the consultants. The nurses' station also handles the sending of alerts to the on call staff by either pager or by SMS because it has all the contact information of the registered on call staff stored in its database of registered on call staffs. It also sends alerts by e-mail to the registered consultants because it has the e-mail address of the registered consultants stored in its database of registered consultants.

Actor: Medical Staff

The medical staffs are employees in the hospital that have access to the bedside system. They are the ones that select the modules that will be used to monitor each patient. The modules the medical staffs select for each patient will be based on the behavior of the patients that needs to be monitored. The medical staff also includes the on call staff and the consultants.

Actor: On call Staff

The on call staff is a staff that is registered with the nurses' station to be alerted by pager or SMS if the patient monitoring system detects a condition that needs intervention. The on call staff works on shifts and so will need to register with the nursing station at the start of their shift to have their contact added to list of contacts the system will send pagers or SMS to when intervention is needed. The on call staff will also need to deregister when the shift is over so that their contact info can be removed from the system.

Actor: consultants

The consultants are not direct staffs of the hospital but can be regarded as staff due to the role they play in the patient monitoring system. The consultants do not visit the hospital regularly but do so in seasons and will have to register with the nurse station and have their e-mail taken by the system by which they will be contacted when a condition that requires their intervention arises. The consultant will need to deregister from the system by deregistering at the nurse station to have their e-mail removed from the contact list when they are consulting periods are over.

Normal flow of events:

1. The medical staff makes sure the modules are plugged into the bedside system of the patient that needs to be monitored.

2. The medical staff selects the modules that need to be monitored from the bedside system.

Alternative courses:

Step 1. The modules to be used are not connected to the bedside system. The system does not show the modules as an option of available modules to be used to monitor the patient's behavior.

Goal: To successfully monitor patients behavior

Overview:

The selected modules are used by the bedside system to monitor the patient's behavior and to also provide the information needed to handle problem.

Normal flow of events:

4. The bedside system displays the current reading of each module based on the poll.

5.0 JUSTIFICATION

1. Based on the request of the management the system has been designed to accept extra modules by creating a larger database that can accept more modules than the system presently has.

2. The design has been prepared with consideration for new modules by making room for other modules in the module selection interface.

3. There are also questions asking the medical staff to select other modules in the case of additional modules being added to the system.

After the staff has selected the module/s to be monitored the next screen that comes up is the screen asking the staff to make connection and to monitor modules. The monitor modules button is set at set editable to be false (which is why it looks grey in the diagram below) so that is cannot be clicked until the make connection button has been clicked and connection is made because it is the make connection button than verifies if the selected modules have been connected to the bedside system

After connection has been successfully made the monitor status button comes back active while the make connection button becomes inactive so that the staff can now monitor the patients status but does not need to make further connection because connection has been made already as can be seen below

After the monitor status button is clicked the system goes ahead to monitor the patients status and based on the periodic polls it makes the current status is displayed as can be seen below

Below the picture of the current status are two buttons one for triggering the bedside system alarm in the case of any detected problem (although this is done automatically by the system) and this same button serves as the switch off button for the already triggered alarm. The second button is for handling message (this is also done automatically by the system).

The nurse's station system is made up of first the welcome screen which asks the staff to either register deregister or receive message (this third option is also handled automatically by the system)

After the staff has filled in the necessary information including a unique password and the phone number which the system store for sending either pagers or SMS messages when the need arises. When the staff hits submit the next page shows up telling the staff that he or she has successfully registered and generates a unique staff ID which is unique to each staff

The same process is carried out for the consultant registration only that instead of providing a phone number, the consultant is asked for an e-mail address to which the alerts will eventually be sent when the need arises

After the consultant has finished registration the page shows telling him/her about the successful registration and a unique staff ID is also given.

Meanwhile if at the welcome page the staff/consultant selects deregister meaning they want to deregister from the system, the screen shows up asking for the two unique identities of the staff/consultant which are the password and Staff ID without which deregistration will not be possible

When the staff/consultant fills in the required information and clicks deregister, the next screen shows telling them that they have successfully deregistered from the system
