Software functionality -

The functionality of software on the computer is essential to running the computer; as if it doesn't function correctly the computer is pretty much useless. Software functionality includes everything from the operation of software such as office word etc. to the whole OS. Software can be installed on a computer in a variety of ways; installing from a CD, downloading from the internet then installing or from an external storage device. Once the software has been downloaded and/or installed it will likely need some kind of setup, the more complex the software is the longer the setup will probably take. After it is setup it should work as expected, if it doesn't you should run a diagnostic to try figure out what the problem is with the software, once the diagnostic has completed the PC will recommend an option to try fix it, this option usually fixes the majority of technical faults. If all else fails removing then re-installing the software would be the only option, this should sort the problem. Generally when downloading a software application the computer will include some sort of help program, the help program tends to include answers to FAQ's regarding problems that occur with the software. Software that has a more in depth help tends to be included within licensed software, for example Microsoft office 2007 includes a lot of interactive help, which usually can be used to solve any problems. Licensed software can only be used with certain unlock codes etc. when installing it. Most licensed software tend to be sold in ranging prices. On the other hand unlicensed tend to have little to no help as they are person to person shared.

Desktop icons and shortcut functionality -

Shortcuts are not necessary features to have on the computer but help to speed up the user accessing programs or files etc. there are several types of shortcuts on the computer, desktop icons are generally the first to be used on the computer, they appear at one side of the monitor by default then they can be moved and resized etc.

Desktop icons are generally shortcuts to commonly used programs such as office applications and web browsers, to create a desktop icon you need to right click when all programs are minimized and the wallpaper is showing. Once you right click on the mouse it should bring up several options, one being to create a new shortcut, select this option then go through the setup of the shortcut to create it. Other shortcuts include shortcuts to web addresses or files on a network etc. all of these will feature a similar setup & work in exactly the same way.

If a shortcut does not function properly the best way to fix it is delete it then make a new one, it is simple to and consumes very little time, alternatively you can right click on the shortcut then edit the options to suit you needs.

Time & date settings -

The time & date is an important factor to have right on any computer, be it a computer within a network or a stand alone system. The time & date helps the user in obvious ways, such as telling them the time, but it is also important to the computer itself. If the computer has its own automated schedule set up to perform tasks, it will rely completely on the time & date, security scans are perfect examples of this, if it doesn't scan at the right times it may leave the computer open to harm from malware.

In addition to the basic role the time & date in helping the computer, it is even more vital to have corrected within a multi-national business, if a computer has incorrect time or date it may affect the business negatively, as things may be shipped late etc.

To set the basic time and date, double clicking on the computers clock will bring up a basic menu that lets you correct it manually or by the internet. To setup a more complex time system you will need to access the time & date settings through the control panel, this will feature more detailed options such as multiple times displayed at once etc. By configuring things like this it will help a business work out what times things need to be sent off in order to reach its destination in time etc.

File sharing settings -

File sharing can vary in complexity due to how things are setup, for example an administrator on a single computer may just restrict a user from accessing certain files, while on a network they may need to set up varying degrees of access for each user group etc. An administrator is the only one that can access everything on the computer, from there the admin can set up what everyone else can access, a good example of this is within a school, the admin can access all files and make changes to software etc, while a pupil may only be able to access files and not be able to configure settings that affect the computer. To set up permissions for file sharing the admin needs to open the control panel then go into the users section, from there they can set permissions for the that user such as letting them see only there own files etc. Then if the admin clicks onto another user then goes through the files the admin can the setup setting for that particular file etc. By setting up file sharing permissions an admin can ensure that a network stays secure and stop anyone from messing around with vital settings.

Security software functionality -

Security software is a vital feature that every computer needs, more so if it is connected to the internet or is on a network, security comes in several levels, the most basic such as windows defender is installed on nearly all computers and provides minimal security features. Then there are downloadable security software's that generally tend to cost, however for the addition of the cost it comes with updates and more features. Top end security software's such as McAfee and Norton 360 will include lots of security features along with tools that help keep the computer running efficiently. To configure your security software for optimum performance you will need to open the program up and then go through all of its features, setting them up to suit you needs. Although all of its features may not be needed, scanners and anti-virus programs are recommended as they are the main features you will need to ensure that your computer remains unharmed from all the potential threats it may encounter.

Device driver functionality -

Device drivers are not completely necessary but will help the computer function with a higher efficiency when connected to external devices. Deice drivers are programs on the computer that control any devices that may connected to the computer, a new printer for example will have its own device driver to be installed when connecting the machine. Once the driver is connected it will run the printer, acting like a middleman between the computer and the printer. Nearly all external devices will have an associated driver, with the exception of some plug & play devices such as USB sticks. If a device driver doesn't function properly access the device driver menu via the control panel then look for the faulty driver, once found go through the options and see if it can be fixed, if not delete the driver and then re-install it. Although drivers are not necessary for the computer to function they help the computer run a lot faster etc. which is beneficial to the user.
