EERP Retail Limited is a company founded since 2000 with a turn-over of Rs. 25 Million yearly, dealing with office stationeries. It operates from a single Head Office in Kingston upon Thames and employs 19 employees. They are classified into two classes of staff namely junior sales staff, which comprises of ten staffs working in different departments in the office itself and the senior sales staff which consists of nine staffs working outdoors from their homes and clients.

The Finance department controls and processes the administrative and accounting procedures such as debtors, creditors and uses a software package known as QuickBooks 2003. The marketing department also processes purchase orders and updates price lists, marketing brochure using Microsoft Publisher, PowerPoint and Microsoft Words 2003 and place them on the file server.

Store department

In the store department, they control all the incoming and outgoing of products, prepare purchase orders, make stock count and arrange for the delivery of products.

The sales force department controls sales at head office itself by using a software package called QuickBooks. They process invoicing or client coming on the spot, sales order, purchase order where they confirm with the store department for the availability in stock. They also attend calls from some senior sales person who work on site that does not have notebooks, printers and internet. They process their requirements and reply them via email or by phone.

Customer Service Department

Any complaint concerning malfunctioning of a product is reported there. From there they report the manager the problem where an exchange, repair or refund is done.

IT Support Department

The IT Support department repairs all PCs and notebooks of the company. They install software like Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office and Quick books, configure staff mail, printers.

The actual system configuration is already out-dated, the PCs and the file server are responding very slowly especially at peak hours. The storing capacity of the server has become very poor. The quality of the service is very poor. Clients become impatient as they have to wait long to get their suitable information, sometimes there is time out in processing documents even no connectivity.

Since they are using star topology where all the Pcs and server are connected to a hub using UTP cable 5 there are a lot of network collisions when all Pcs send packet at the same time. No more pcs can be added on the network since the hub is full and also a limited RJ 45 Socket

There is not enough security. Firewall is not installed. Hackers from outsiders can easily steal username and password and privacy data of the company. Virus and other threats can easily affect the company and the users as there is no internet filter and the antivirus have already expired.

Documents sometimes get jam as it is a shared printer connected to one PC. If the PC is off or break down the company cannot print. The cost ink for the senior staff is high.

Sometimes documents cannot be open properly when clients send documents in MS Word 2010, they cannot open properly since they use Open Office.

PROPOSED SOLUTIONS

To overcome the inconvenient services provided by the company, the management has set aside a budget to equip its senior sales force with a mixture of wireless enable portable Notebook PCs, printers and personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and gradually convert their existing wired network to a Wi-Fi network where the staff can provide appropriate advice to customers and also create suitable quotes for the company's products.

The following proposed solutions need to be taken in consideration where it will solve almost all the main problems that the company is being faced and it will be more user friendly so that all members of the staff can understand its functionalities.

Since the Secretary PC is out-dated, it will exchange by the Marketing Manager PC who will need a new and more powerful PC which will help the in the making of publicity for the company.

Some senior staff will be provided with Notebooks where they can connect directly to the file server at the head office to make their transactions like downloading quotation, checking update for price list, making invoice downloading Presentation like Power point that use sound and video, checking client database without passing through the junior sales.

Some senior staff will also be provided with Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) as the PDA is equipped with Bluetooth and WIFI technology where they can easily use a web browser to check updated information at the Head office and also use MS outlook Express to check their Mail.

All senior staff will be provided with a laser jet printer, where it can use toner instead of ink which is very expensive.

A wireless Access point will be installing in the head office and little by little the employees PCs will be equipped with a PCI wireless network card where they will be able to connect through a wireless network instead of connecting through RJ45 socket. This will make advantage to the company especially when the senior staffs come to the head office they can connect through the wireless connection.

A print server will be added to the printers where it will be independent to print as it will connect directly the switch and users can print more easily.

VPN Router will be installed in the office where a specific TCP port 1723 and UDP port 500 will be use which can control all the security and connectivity at all levels like encrypted data, firewall. Route all IP connection.

1.1.2 The Network Architecture

To improve communicate to the head office more easily and securely, the network architecture has to be change.

Below find the new proposed network model for the EERP Retail Limited Company:

A Virtual Private Network Technology (VPN) is being implementing in the network architecture. It is a private data network that uses the internet connection to share resources more securely through the use of tunnelling protocol. All the staff will allow connecting to the file server remotely or locally only with a unique identification and password. Users who are not on the same network will not get access to resource of the company. This done by creating tunnels that wraps data packets to send them through the internet, the outer layer of the tunnel is surrounded by dangerous virus, hackers.

VPN client software will be installed on all PCs and notebooks and VPN server software on the file where a personal identification number is needed to input before accessing the database of the file server. The data is encrypted before sending it through the internet and then decrypted at the receiving end. Due to the encryption and decryption mode, resources are very secure; other users on the internet cannot read the information.

1.2.1 DATA SECURITY

A firewall is a set of related programs, located at a network gateway server that protects the resources of a private network from users from other networks. An enterprise with an intranet that allows its workers access to the wider Internet installs a firewall to prevent outsiders from accessing its own private data resources and for controlling what outside resources its own users have access to.

Data encryption and decryption are also important as it safeguard data while travelling from peers to peers across the internet and within a company. It makes data useless to anyone except to authorize users.

Therefore when a connection is established between the staff and the server, data are encrypted from the senders, travels through a secure VPN tunnel and decrypted to the receivers using a crypto map that is compatible with one of the others.

2.1 Setting up the network with two wireless nodes and one wired node.

2.1.1 Connecting the router to PC 1

Find below step by step the connecting PC 1 to the Wireless router NETGEAR DG834G.

Connect one end of the UTP CAT 5e cable to the Wireless Modem NETGEAR and the other end to the computer PC1 as shown below.

Open Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, in the address bar type the original IP address which it can be found under the Modem as follows: 192.168.1.1 where we get the administrator console. From there we get access of its configuration screen.

It will prompt for the user name and password before entering the main interface of the router. The username and password can be found under router itself. For our modem the login name is ''admin'' and the password is '' password.''

After typing the Original IP: 192.168.1.1 in the address bar, the configuration screen will appear.

This show router default IP Status, we will assign a new IP as 192.168.248.57

Changing the default IP, on the left hand side of the screen configuration, click on the ''basic setting'', ''Advanced'' then ''LAN IP Setup''

Shows the default IP of the Router, now we will change it to 192.168.248.57

Since it will be a DHCP server, and the range of IP addresses for the nodes is from 192.168.248.60 to 192.168.248.90, we check the box of '' Use Router as DHCP Server'' and configure the IP range then press the apply button.

Using Command Prompt by clicking on ''start'', ''run'' and ''cmd'' and PING command to check if PC1 is able to send and receive information from the router.

The router is replying back to PC1 without losing any packets

Changing the SSID and enabling the wireless access point of the NETGEAR router modem.

The SSID means Service Set Identifier. It is the name given of a wireless local area network in order to communicate to other devices. The same name must be given to all wireless devices on the network so that they communicate.

Find below steps to be taken to change the SSID router, enable the wireless access point and enable Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key. WPA is a passphrase to secure the wireless network.

The SSID name has been changed to PTLSJC

Wireless access Point has been enabled

After completing all the steps in the router configuration, we need to save all input done and restart the wireless router so that it applies the input data.

Configuring PC2 to join the Wireless network

To connect PC 2 to the wireless network with SSID PTLSJC, a NETGEAR WG111 USB Dongle is being use.

Find below steps for installing the USB Dongle.

Installing USB Dongle

As soon as the USB dongle is plug, we need to install the driver.

The setup button is press to install the USB Dongle driver

Then we click on the next button till the setup is complete as shown below the three figures:

After Installing the Dongle driver, we run the wireless software to connect to the SSID PTLSJC.

Below found the wireless wizard program.

Since our NETGEAR router is equipped with WPS Push button, the following steps are applicable to connect both devices.

WPS Push button is a new Technology on the router that help us to connect our Wireless device more easily as it configures the device automatically without to know the SSID, passphrase and security key. This is an advantage as no one can guess the passphrase or security key.

The USB Dongle has detected a wireless signal

We push on the WPS button on the left side of the router and press on the green button on our wizard. They will synchronize and will connect.

After one minutes they are connected and the router will assign a new IP automatically in the range between 192.168.248.60 and 192.168.248.90 as shown below:

And the new IP of PC 2 is 192.168.248.62

The new IP of PC2 is 192.168.248.62 and the gateway also is the same as the router 192.168.248.57.

They are connected wirelessly.

2.1.4 Configuring Notebook to join the PTLSJC network.

The Fujitsu Siemens Notebook is already built in a wireless Network that it has only to search the Network signal connect to the network as shown below:

The notebook has detected the PTLSJC signal. Just right click on the SSID and press connect.

Using Command prompt and PING command demonstrate that PC 1 with IP 192.168.248.60, PC2 with IP 192.168.248.61 and notebook PC 3 with IP 192.168.248.62 is connected successfully
