We live in a multimedia world, surrounded by complex images, movements and sounds .It is a known fact that our human evolution has focused in making our technology reflect the color and glamour of our surroundings. Multimedia and hypermedia systems are steadily growing computer-based technology that finds a vast area of applications in the field of education, science, medicines, research, Information technology, commercial purposes, and so on...The main criteria in which these two systems gets differ is the way the user gets involved in using the systems . In case of a multimedia user, he experiences a passive involvement whereas in a hypermedia experience the user is more actively involved. This report describes briefly on the electronic multimedia and its companion concept, hypermedia.

Multimedia and the Internet require a completely new approach to writing. A good site must be made with a specific purpose in mind and a site with good interactivity and new technology can also be useful for attracting visitors. The site must be attractive and innovative in its design, function in terms of its purpose, easy to navigate, frequently updated and fast to download. When users view a page, they can only view one page at a time. As a result, multimedia users must create a 'mental model of information structure'.

Multimedia Systems

Multimedia is the integration of text, sound, animation and digital video. Multimedia refers to an ed combination of media including text, audio, video and animation which can be accessed interactively. Multimedia enhances presentation of information. Some applications of multimedia presentations are,

Online newspapers

Business presentation

Online courses

Online education

Multimedia applications need computer that supports multi sensory input and output devices, i.e., high performance computer systems with high resolution monitors and audio output. It provides specialized devices to enter data to the computer systems like scanner, microphones, digitizers, etc….multimedia systems should have to compress the data files for transmission and storage as well as to decompress such files when user requests it. Evolving standards for image and video compression include JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group) for still image compression and MPEG (Motion Picture Coding Expert Group) for motion picture image compression.

Multimedia finds its application in various forms. Some of them could be listed as follows,

Business - presentations and brochures

Commercial Advertisement - video ads, animations, brochures, websites etc

Art - creating art based on animations, sound, video etc.

Education - creating course demonstrations, illustrations etc.

Entertainment - creating special effects for games, movies, sound engineering etc.

Engineering - creating CAD diagrams, Architecture diagrams etc.

Medicine - medical illustrations, demonstrations, presentations etc.

Scientific research - making statistical models and other illustrations.

Hypermedia Systems

The hypermedia enhances hypertext (webpages). The advantage of Hypertext is that the information is non-linear. The data does not have to be presented in a linear fashion. The users can view whichever pages they wish to. The flexibility of this type of documents Is what makes the internet so powerful. And hypertexts enhanced as hypermedia is the foundation of the world wide web of HTTP documents.

Hyper media is often used to solve various data processing and presentation problems. Some of the most identified of these applications are,

Curriculum authoring and presentation

Visual databases

Education animations/documentaries

Student presentations

Websites/web applications

Hypermedia development is made possible by an array of Software. Some of the most well known in the industry are,

Adobe creative Suite

Adobe premier

Microsoft Web Matrix

Some open source options are,

Open Office etc.

The software from these vendors have capabilities well beyond the requirements of a traditional multimedia context. Many neo hypermedia experimentation are made possible by these technologies. For example, the Adobe creative suite ahs tools for page layout, Design, web page authoring, web application development, Flash Animations etc.

The common resources available in hypermedia authoring are as follows,

Page layout - Pagemaker, Adboe Indesign

Animations - Adobe flash

Video authoring/editing - Adobe premier

Audio editing - Ulead Studio

Photo enhancements and design - Adobe Photoshop, GIMP

Vector graphics - Adobe illustrator, Inkscape

Limitations of Hypermedia/multimedia systems

Hardware dependency - hypermedia/multimedia production requires expensive hardware including memory, processing power and storage.

Learning curve - the software systems used for production requires extensive training and the skills required to demonstrate standard qualities are leaned over time.

Integration problems - the integration of these technologies for application in education, business and other uses are not well understood. Training a team for the required purpose of time consuming and experimental.

Access problems - it is commented upon that information is presented in such a way in hypermedia that it becomes increasingly difficult for finding a more detailed level of insight. The data is presented and bars people from going deeper in to the info.

Multimedia is a combination of media for effective data formatting and presentation. And hypermedia is simply multimedia in a world wide web context or for presentation in a web environment like a browser or intranet. Both multimedia and hypermedia use texts, images, audio, video, animations and other types of media for presentation. Websites, movies, advertisements etc extensively use multimedia technology. In case of hypermedia, the content is accessible non -sequentially. Ie. The users can access information for a pool of links and spend time only on those aspects that they require. This is not the case of multimedia where the information is represented sequentially and the use has limited control over the data presentation.

Multimedia enhances the presentation of data in all walks of life, having applications in business, education, entertainment, advertisement, art etc. the technologies of multimedia and hypermedia are made possible by a myriad of software tool that enable their authoring and production. These tools provide with the most modern design and production abilities. Both multimedia and hypermedia do have certain limitations. These are manageable with a a focused approach to their implementation and use. The applications of hypermedia has truly defined the fields of their use in ways that make them indispensable for any presentation of information.
