During my report I plan to discuss the values of interactive media, I will include a definition of the tools used for interactive media authoring, I will include a complete description on each of the tools these include Flash, Shockwave, Real Media and Java. I will also be writing about the production process which is basically explaining how all of the tools are made and produced. I will also be writing about delivery formats and also the uses of interactive media authoring. I will also be writing about the elements included and interactivity and control methods.
Adobe Flash (formerly Macromedia Flash) is a multimedia platform used to add animation, video, and interactivity to web pages. Flash is frequently used for advertisements, games and flash animations for broadcast. More recently, it has been positioned as a tool for "Rich Internet Applications" ("RIAs")
Macromedia was an American graphics and web development software company (1992-2005) headquartered in San Francisco, California that produced such products as Flash and Dreamweaver. Its rival, Adobe Systems, acquired Macromedia on December 3, 2005 and controls the line of Macromedia products.
Java is a programming language originally developed by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems (which has since merged into Oracle Corporation) and released in 1995 as a core component of Sun Microsystems' Java platform. The language derives much of its syntax from C and C++ but has a simpler object model and fewer low-level facilities than either C or C++.
Real Media is a proprietary multimedia container format created by RealNetworks. Its extension is ".rm". It is typically used in conjunction with RealVideo and RealAudio and is used for streaming content over the Internet. Typically these streams are in CBR (constant bitrate), but a container for VBR (variable bitrate) streams, named RMVB (Real Media variable bitrate), has been developed.
The Production Process
Interactive media productions is an advanced certificate program, this will provide skill that are key to the development of contents using media tools. The development of interactive new media is proven on the animation pipeline. Whether it is an interactive MOA with a gaming component or a data rich interactive visual library. Interactive media production is composed of different stages that describe the stability of the program. There are a number of processes that need to be followed in the production process these are Funding, Planning, Designing, Producing, Testing and Marketing.
Obtaining funding is critical for the majority of multimedia companies, there are many different ways companies can obtain funding these include things such as writing proposals or joining competition and obtaining contacts through personal contacts or referrals, for the majority of companies their work is through a contract with a client which can be obtained by using one or more of the methods I have mentioned.
Once a contract has been confirmed and secured, theirs begins to be a series of negotiations between the client and the developer. They will discuss things such as ownership of the content and the project and payment schedule, sometimes, the developer will receive the content from the client who owns the copyright and materials, and sometimes the developer may have to start the project from scratch. The developer and client will need to agree on completion dates of the product so they can then further discuss the budget of the project. The development team will begin to brainstorm out ideas and objectives and decide on the presentation and delivery style.
Based upon the clients feedback of the product, there will be various specification documents which will be developed, this will provide further information on the content, design, function and the interface of the product. During this phase, the objectives, presentation style, delivery platform and the overall approach are finalized.
The process of testing is usually very continuous and repetitive, formative evaluation occur at every phase and multiple times, this is necessary to make sure that the product is the highest quality that It can be, clients or companies will use many different methods to test their product such as surveys to receive feedback from users, video games for example could release a beta so that players can play the game and point out the good and bad points and any potential glitches or exploits which can then be fixed before the game officially comes out.
Uses of interactive multimedia authoring
There are many uses of interactive multimedia authoring, web developers use it to add interactivity, sound and motion to their website. Animators will use it to create animation for output to videotape or streaming web movies. Developers use it to create single-user games on which is then distributed one either a CD or DVD ROM. Software developers use it to create working models of applications, allowing demonstration and fine-tuning of the look and feel of products that are still under development. Interactive media authoring integrates a lot of different element including sound, video, animation, text, quizzes and interactivity to produce a whole complete package, which can be distributed in a number of different ways, the most common way is through the use of a CD/DVD ROM, many books also include interactive CD ROMs In addition to traditional text based content, interactive media authoring is also being increasingly used to create educational and training product such as Driving theory test and workout and fitness DVDs. Interactive media products could also be applied in some large multimedia areas or companies, which will produce a wide range of effects to the product. This effect can be used for entertainment, such as in computers or console games such as Xbox.
Delivery formats of interactive media authorising products
When choosing your format you will be trying to find a wider range as possible of some kind of audience, DVDs and CDs are probably the best way to go if you are looking to generate interest in your idea or product. USB drives could also be effective in terms of getting your product exposed and out there, however with the use of the USB drive you run the risk of the USB becoming corrupt. Another type of format would be the information kiosk, this format requires no web connection which makes a corrupted file a lot easier to replace.
Elements included and interactivity and control methods
When attempting to create a good solid interactive media product you should first consider your target audience, what age range is it? Male or female? Etc… There are many different types of interactive media advertising, using different types of advertising presentations and tools, different types of advertising can interact differently with each individual user which can affect the outcome, this reinforces the need for interactive advertising which will persuade people who are thinking of buying it and also the target audience. Various aspects of internet advertising are under control from the advertisers, Most of these include structural elements, such as advertising, and features and formats. This does not mean the consumer can never control the structure of the interactive media product. The different types of interactive advertising which are controlled by advertisers, for example Banner advertising, hyperlinks, sponsorship with the product.
Part 2 - Compare and contrast at least 4 different authored products, from at least two different formats this may include new/recent products as well as older products. These may have been created for any commercial purpose. Give detailed reviews to include the content of the products, the possible client and user needs, the format it is delivered in, as well as identifying strengths and weaknesses of the programs, and highlighting possible improvements.
Call of Duty
Call of Duty or CoD for short is a first person shooter video game, the Call of Duty games are published and owned by Activision and published for Apple OS X by Aspyr Media. The majority of the games have been primarily developed by Infinity Ward and Treyarch, Infinity Ward has been the developers of Call Of Duty 1&2, Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and most recently of course Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 whilst Treyarch have developed Call Of Duty 3, Call Of Duty: World At War and Call Of Duty: Black Ops. The Call Of Duty games are primarily based on war and conflict in the single player campaigns, however Call Of Duty is best known for its multiplayer which allows up to 18 players (9 each team) to participate in team based game modes where each one has a different objective. The game is available on PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Wii. There are many different interactive features available on the games, these include being able to customise your player card, where you can choose a specific title and emblem, you can also choose a clan tag, in the Call of Duty Black Ops game you could customise your player model and choose his camouflage, and his army gear etc… The game is delivered in a CD-ROM format which is used for almost all gaming platforms, this doesn't take up much memory on your hard drive, however if you wish to install the disk to your hard drive the size of the file could be in excess of 1-3GB. The strengths of this product is that it's very fun to play and can be played alone or with friends, doesn't require much memory (if not installed), weaknesses are that the game is a target for modifying/hacking which is very common in this particular series to achieve higher ranks and better stats through modifying the game, this leads to unfair stats and leader boards which can ruin peoples online experience, I feel that this is the area that needs to be improved.
FIFA is a video game based on football, the game is released every single year by Electronic Arts under the EA sports label. FIFA has all the official player names and kits and is the most up to date official football game on the market, it features a variety of offline and online modes, including Career Mode, Virtual Pro, Ultimate Team any many more. The game is available on a very wide range of platforms FIFA 13 will be released on Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 2, Microsoft Windows, iOS, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Portable. The game uses many interactive features, the most noticeable one being the 'game face' this allows you to upload a photo of your face and apply it into the game, so you can have your own face on your in game player. This game is delivered in a few different formats, CD-ROMs for PC and game consoles and also in mobile app format. The strengths of this product is that it is the only officially licensed football game, weaknesses is that the game does not generally receive many improvements each year, so it is just like buying the same game with very little improvement. I think the product could be improved by making more changes to gameplay each year and trying to add in new game modes.
Angry Birds is a puzzle videogame, Angry Birds is developed by Rovio Entertainment. Angry Birds came from a few sketches of some stylish wingless birds and since its release on iOS back in December 2009 has sold over 12million copies from apples app store and has further gone on to be successful on android phones. In the game, players use a slingshot to launch birds at pigs stationed on or within various structures, with the intent of destroying all the pigs on the playing field. As players advance through the game, new types of birds become available, some with special abilities that can be activated by the player. Rovio Mobile has supported Angry Birds with numerous free updates that add additional game content, and the company has also released stand-alone holiday and promotional versions of the game. The games format is delivered as a downloadable mobile app. The strengths of this product is that it's very simple and addictive and can be accessed any time anywhere by simply loading the app on your phone, the weaknesses are that all the angry birds games are all very similar so you don't really get anything new or exciting.
The icloud is a storage and cloud computing service made by apple. The cloud service allows users to store all of their data such as, music, applications, videos etc… on a computer service which allows you to download them to your iPod, iPhone, iPad. This service is used to allow users to back up their phones data, in case of damage, theft or loss so there is no problem with important date being lost. The format of iCloud is a website. The strengths of this product are that it allows users to back up data wirelessly, so they don't have the hassle of losing data. The weaknesses are that iCloud is not good for photo storage as it was more designed to transfer photos from one device to the other.
The benefits of using Self running products such as the cloud storage is that if people store there music library online in the cloud, if something unexpected happens for example your computer breaks down you can recover your music library after you get a new computer and you will not lose any of the date that you had already stored. Another benefit for using the cloud storage for keeping personal information or music is that rather being stuck with a local storage device that might not even be portable, you can use the internet to access or stream from any location that has an internet connection. Another benefit is that if you store your music in the cloud using services you can share playlists with friends anywhere. Many network sites do now provide such tools to share music on social networking sites for example Facebook or Twitter. The Drawbacks of using the cloud storage is that if you want to access your online storage you will need an internet connection. And if people need to get information or music of the cloud storage urgently but don't have internet connection this could slow people down from getting there music or information or data. Another drawback is that because all your information and music is protected just by your username and password, your media files could be unsecure if there is a weak spot in your security. Another disadvantage is that even though your personnel information or music is secure, you won't have any control on where or how it is stored. The company that's hosts the files could choose it can store the data on the server.
The benefits of using a CD/DVD-ROM is that you don't have to install a lot of data into your hard drive as the date is installed into the disk, another benefit is you can also burn your own music, songs or video to the disk, so you can listen and watch whatever you want such as in your car. You can also use these for interactive DVDs such as workout or fitness DVDs meaning that you can get a workout by simply watching the T.V and following the instructions on the DVD, there is also a lot of DVDs that are used for educational purposes such as interactive learning DVDs for teaching kids how to read and write and say the alphabet, there is also things like driving theory test DVDs which teach you the theory of driving. The drawbacks for using CD/DVD-ROMs is that they can be very expensive to make and you may need to get specialist involved to help with the filming and the production
The benefits of using a website for interactive media is that adding multimedia functions to a website can make it much more appealing to the audience, usually this would be through the use of video, audio and images which would catch the audiences eye, another benefit of using websites is that the layout is very simple and they are fairly easy to manoeuvre around and you can simply click on what you want to see more of that specific interactive, multimedia website are more preferred by marketing companies they have the ability to present branding, the disadvantages of interactive media being used on websites is that images are not put on the website correctly could damage the website.
The benefits of using mobile apps for interactive media is that the majority of phones are very simple to use, another benefit of the interactive app is that due to the phones size the phone can be taken away and be with you all day meaning that you can access the majority of interactive apps wherever you are as long as you have your phone with you, another benefit is that there is more or less an app for just about anything and everything and there is a lot of space on the phone to store these apps. Drawbacks include things such as advertising on the apps, these adverts tend to pop up when you have a free or a beta version of an app and you keep seeing adverts linking you to the new upgraded version, this can put off users as they do not want these adverts to interrupt what they are trying to do. Another drawback is that there are a lot of different sized devices which makes app making a lot more difficult as you have to take into account the screen size, for example if there was an app designed specifically for the iPhone then when you come to use the same app on the iPad then the app may not work properly as it is designed to run on the smaller screen on the iPhone.
