Internet is a widely use term that we encounter quite often. It is like a new exciting city, awaiting exploration. Internet is now being use everywhere and it's the most easiest and common way of getting information. People of different ages and statuses use internet in various ways. It's commonly used for business, exchanging information, social link-ups and education. The importance of internet in everyday life has increased so much that it has now became an integral part of our lives

As internet is highly being used as an educational and informational resource it is important to understand its right use and to take correct measures about information in take. That either the amount of information you are getting is necessary or not and how to use it in a way to get maximum benefit out of it. With the advancement of internet the risk and danger attached to it is also getting higher which is making one's safety weak on internet.

Almost every job today requires at least some knowledge of computers, and for an increasing number of jobs, productivity is directly related to an individual's level of computer expertise. [1] Like all other fields computer is widely being use by young teenagers also. Nearly every youngster in our nation has access to internet at their place. While going through some basic researches and my personal experience, what I observe mostly is the growing use of internet in young teenagers. They serve daily an amount of time in-front of the internet both for studies and fun. There is an argument which I listen quite often by the youngsters these days is that how much internet is important in their lives as they gain lots of information out of it and that's why they serve an enormous amount of time in-front of the internet. But at times when they are inquired about general topics and current affairs they mostly fail to satisfy others by not having the amount of knowledge they suppose to know.

This gave birth to my question that, is internet surfing really helping the youngsters? Or it's just an understatement. I wanted to explore, is internet surfing providing them with any amount of knowledge or is just a good of killing time. While selecting a topic for my research I thought this is a problem I want to look for that if it's not helping our youth than we have to stop them and make them aware of the side effects of excessive searching and if it does help then we have to encourage our children by providing them right assistance so they can look for more positive information. The Internet has a double-edged sword characteristic for children: providing many opportunities for learning (Parent Link, 2004; Wartella, Lee, & Caplovitz, 2002) while exposing children to potentially negative content (Finkelhor, Mitchell, & Wolak, 2000). According to a survey conducted by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in July 2002, 78% of family households with children have Internet access at home. A survey by Yahoo and Carat showed that children ages 12 to 17 used the Internet an average of 16.7 hours per week in 2003(Indian television, 2003). Given this extensive usage, the Internet has the potential to be a very powerful socialization agent (Huston, Watkins, & Kunkel, 1989). [2] Internet has its own advantages and disadvantages depending upon how you use them. The purpose of this research is to find out answers for all such questions that how it's affecting the development of youngsters physically, socially and emotionally, and whether internet is being used effectively to enhance their individual development?

It is quite a difficult question to answer that the effect of internet surfing is completely positive or negative? There are open examples of youngsters who have achieved great success in the field of technology and studies while using internet any by keeping their focus in front of them Babar Iqbal is one of them. In 2009, at the age of 13, Babar Iqbal from Dera Ismail Khan, brought honor to our country by grabbing his fourth world record as the youngest boy in the field of computer. His other records include those as a Microsoft Certified Professional, Certified Wireless Network Administrator, Certified Web Professional Associate and Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist. [3]

Internet surfing does not provide you with limited options it has great range of options which it gives to all its users depending upon how they use it. In past few years the boom in technology centre has make us so much technology dependent that it is hard to resist it now. But we have to make clear decisions that how much technology is needed and how much is unnecessary for us. No doubt internet is full of information and all kind of stuff you dream of, it has all the fascination for every age group of people and especially for youngsters, which has started showing clearly in past few years in the form of growing interest of youngsters in internet. It's important for them and for us as well to understand the difference between knowledge and information and to get an answer for the question that how much knowledge they got by surfing daily in the world of information. Is it helping the youngsters the way they claim it or is the situation other way round? It's been rightly said that:

"The significant problem we face cannot be solve

by the same level of thinking that created them."

-Albert Einstein

In this research I have studied the affect of internet on the behavior of youngsters and mostly on the one's individual intellectual growth. How much it is helping them and in what manners does it help most. Is it helping them in every aspect like science, art and literature or just in one way? And what social effect does it create? Like the effects on their language and lifestyles.

Is it really making them strong emotionally or weakening their relationship with their fellow beings?

RESEARCH FINDINGS:

"Across the world there is a passionate love affair between children and computers... And more than wanting [computer technology], they seem to know that in a deep way it already belongs to them. They know they can master it more easily and more naturally than their parents. They know they are the computer generation. "

-Seymour Papert, TheC onnectedFa mily, 1996

The internet has become an in separable part of life for most of the people in this contemporary world and children are not excluded. Because of the availability of internet everywhere in school, colleges and at home youngsters are increasingly becoming part of this technology.

2.1. What is Internet?

A means of connecting a computer to any other computer anywhere in the world via dedicated routers and servers. When two computers are connected over the Internet, they can send and receive all kinds of information such as text, graphics, voice, video, and computer programs [4] .

2.2. Purpose of the Research Study:

After deciding my research topic I went through some of the books and research journal in order to understand others perspective also over this issue. The article written in a book "Surfing social studies" by "Miachel Berson and Eillen Berson" by the name of safe web exploration helps me in understanding how children become computer addict so easily and what effects does excessive unmonitored internet surfing creates on children.

Detail research study by Margie K. Shields and Richard E. Behrman on this topic helps me a lot in building up an argument as it talks about every possible aspect of internet surfing. In their research journal "Children and Computer Technology: Analysis and Recommendations" they have not only discussed about its personal impact but also about its social effects on society.

By going through these books and some more research journals I realize there are many reasons which are leading youngsters towards excessive internet surfing. The main reason is that they have no guide line to follow by which they know how to do safe and effective internet surfing. Now a day's every child is provided with personal computer in their bedrooms which gives them the freedom to sit on internet whole night and surf anything they like.

The question is not only to know whether they are getting information or not? It's equally important to know what type of information they are getting. And according to them what is a definition of getting real knowledge.

If internet surfing is really helping them, than it must be evident in their results and personalities.

2.3. Internet Surfing:

Internet surfing is getting popular in youngsters these days that's why they serve daily an amount of time in front of internet and spent their time doing different activities online. No doubt where internet surfing is helping them to remain more aware it also creates some negative effects. The purpose of this research is also to know about the both sides of the picture and to get positive result out of it. If internet surfing is not helping than they should be ask to look for other positive activities instead of internet.

Prolong sitting in-front of computer causes many harmful effects on children's growth and behavior. Excessive, unmonitored use of computers, especially when combined with use of other screen technologies, such as television, can place children at risk for harmful effects on their physical, social, and psychological development. Children need physical activity, social interaction, and the love and guidance of caring adults to be healthy, happy, and productive. [5]

Too much time in front of a screen can deprive children of time for organized sports and other social activities that are beneficial to child development. [6]

The type of activities in which students especially young teenagers got involved affects their intellectual and social growth. Internet offers wide range of different purposes. The use of the Internet is increasing rapidly. As of 2000, an estimated 21 million children and teens were accessing the Internet from home. Some of the common purposes for which teens mostly use net are web exploration, chatting, gaming and for researches. When games are the principal option, boys spent much more time with computers than girls did [7] . Children of both genders surf the Web for music and photos of movie stars, use e-mail to exchange messages with friends, and especially among teens, use the Internet to visit multiuser domains (MUDs) and chat rooms [8] .

It has been observed that moderate use of internet to play online games has no significant bad effect on children's personal and social growth. It even helps them in enhancing certain visual intelligence skills also. It helps them in visualizing three dimensional shapes and figures. These skills in longer term can also help them as to grow their knowledge in the field of technology. But with all that it's equally important to see that what type of games youngsters are playing and what attracts them most. Because multiple games creates multiple effects and internationally every game is rated in order to tell what type of game is for what age group of people but as we lack such knowledge in our country it's important to educate our kids in this manner. Some research also suggests an association between playing violent computer games and increased aggression. Amount of aggression and violence has increased in each generation of computer games. And parents are often unaware of the extent of the violence, even though many of the most popular games have violent themes. [9] Children should be encouraged to play physical games like surfing, soccer, hockey and cricket. It will keep their personalities fresh, good looking and energetic rather than a tedious, boring and deadly dull looking children as an "N-Surfer" looks in his social behavior.

Internet surfing also helps students in collecting visual data as it is now easier for them to study about different living species and by seeing their images provided over internet they can know about their size, appearance and habitat. Internet also provides you with 3D images by which you can easily understand mechanics and models of different things. It also helps in better understanding with the study of shapes.

It's important to understand that why access to internet is is important? Who needs access and for what? How can we assure that access leads to positive learning experiences at school and at home? As computers become ubiquitous in our daily lives, it is important to understand how computer technology can enhance or detract from a child's growth and development. Computers are not an end in themselves, but a means to an end. We must determine what we want our children to experience and learn from their use of computers so that they are empowered to

take control of this powerful new tool in their lives. [10]

2.4. Negative Effects of Internet Surfing:

Chatting and social networking is no wonder becoming an important part of every teenager's life. Though these sites are not suppose to be for kids under 18 years of age but still its widely being used by all age group of people in which majority includes youngsters under 18 years of age. They use to sign up by making false accounts and by providing wrong information such as by entering wrong age and birth year. Online friendships and relations affect children as it lessen the child's bonding with friends and family. Children who spend hours in chat rooms looking for friends or just passing time can be easily

targeted and abused by unknown adult sexual offenders (Kids Health, 2004).

As children serve time in doing web browsing and spent time doing statuses update on internet affects their education also. Excessive internet use contributes to a student's failure to complete homework and study for school. [11]

These negative effects of violent games on children are even more serious regarding the Internet because access to such violent games has become easier for unsupervised children due to free or fee-based online games (Collwell & Payne, 2000). Online gambling has also been cited as a serious Internet problem affecting children.

A new term "N-Surfer" is being used in doctor's community to indicate mental illness of a person who is a victim of excessive internet surfing. The symptoms found in an "N-Surfer" person are;

1. Anxiety

2. Depression

3. Headache

4. Neurotic Shocks & Epilepsy

5. Alzheimer

Children try to do multiple things at a time on internet they do homework, listen to music, have a couple g-chats going, and text intermittently. They Facebook, watch a video on YouTube, comment on it, IM a friend and return to doing math problems. Young people growing up in the digital era thrive on constant stimulation and fast rewards. Gadgets are perfect for this - friends are just a click away and at all hours of the night, someone somewhere is commenting on a Facebook post, available to chat online, etc. which affects their attention span as by doing so many things at a time they are not able to focus on one thing completely. [12]

According to a research 40 % of Pakistani youth is addicted to internet and is wasting its resources. Pakistani youth needs to use internet in a productive way instead of wasting it completely by social networking and gaming etc.

2.5. Positive Impact of Internet Surfing:

Like everything internet also serves many positive effects on the growth of the children and it also helps them in achieving higher goals.

Arfa Karim Randhawa

In 2004, at the age of nine, Arfa from Faisalabad was honored as the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional in the world. She got 4.99 marks out of 5 in Oracle 10 exam and received Fatimah Jinnah Gold Medal in the field of Science and Technology for her brilliant performance. She was also awarded the Salaam Pakistan Youth and President's Award for Pride.

Ammar Afzal

In 2009, at the age of 15, Ammar Afzal from Okara city, while in Ninth Grade bagged the top position at the international level in a contest organized by Stanford University. He got 4.99 marks out of 5 in Oracle 10 exam and it was also a world record. Stanford University has awarded him a scholarship for higher studies. [13]

These are some of the examples of those youngsters who have used heir resources in the right direction. The use of technology is in the hands of the youngsters that how they want to serve positive activities lead towards positive attitude and success while on the other hand excessive use in wrong direction leads towards the destruction. After all computer technology is just a tool depending over its user how they uses it.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

The objective of this research study is:

To investigate that is excessive internet surfing is helping youngsters or not.

To analyze its psychological, personal and social impacts.

To study its effects on the children who are using it.

To give an alternate plan if it's not helping youngsters as it's suppose to be.

RESEARCH METHADOLOGY:

For my research design, I have decided to do a survey research, primarily based on questionnaires in order to collect an exact data to evaluate and analyze that what percentage of our youngsters are using internet daily and for what purpose they are using it? Is it helping them with their personal lives and studies or not? And also to know the correct amount of time they serve on internet surfing either it's because of their studies and work load that they are force to sit in front of computer for hours or they just found internet a better substitute of all the other fun filled physical activities and emotional relationships.

For collection of data I have divided my research into two stages. At first stage I have collected data in a form of a questionnaire filled by the students of different schools and colleges (both males and females). And at second stage I have conducted some interviews from the students who have brilliant track records in studies as well as in extra circular activities and their respective teachers to know the affects of internet on kids as individual and society as collective. Quantitative method has been adopted for research.

3.1. QUANTITATIVE METHOD

A quantitative approach is taken, which helped in answering the exact amount of time served on internet surfing etc, my research is targeted towards youngsters so keeping this and my primary research in mind I have designed my questionnaire accordingly . I have chosen to make a close ended questionnaire in order to investigate the social behavior of our youth regarding the use of internet. And to understand its affects on youth I structured some interviews with the kids individually and their teachers also as they are the one who notices the change of behavior in students because of the factors which includes internet also. This method is also important because sometimes for comparisons proper statistical figures are required to make a correct analysis that either the amount served is equal to the amount needed to do particular amount of work.

3.2. STRUCTURE OF RESEARCHQUETIONNARE

starting from very basic questions my research questionnaire moves towards complex questions in the end. I have inquired about the time they serve on internet daily? And at what time they felt more comfortable using it? Is it helping them with their studies or not? They are doing it because their studies demand it or just for the sake of fun? Also how they utilize their spare time while sitting on internet just by visiting social websites or by doing some positive and constructive research which makes them aware about the inventions and advancement in the world. As my target audience are kids from 14-18 years of age which are sensible teenagers but sometimes never too confident with their thoughts to be discussed in public that's why I have designed a questionnaire in such a manner that provides them with multiple options to choose from in order to help them choosing the most accurate answer and providing them the liberty and confidence to choose answers which they might hesitate to write if they were asked to write themselves.

3.3. STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS

Structured interviews are a means of collecting data for a survey. The choice of answers to the questions is often fixed, close-ended, though open-ended questions can also be included within a structured interview. I have interviewed several teachers and psychologist to understand the correct behavior and needs of the youngsters of this generation. It is equally important to know the solution and precautions for the problems of teenagers.

I have interviewed some teenagers also to get their more detailed and clear opinions which they generally hide to share in front of their other fellows and especially in front of elders by thinking that it might hurt their image in front of them.

3.4. METHOD OF ANALYSIS:

i) NUMERICAL ANALYSIS:

After collecting basic data in the form of the questionnaire and interviews the real job is to analyze and evaluate it properly. For that I have use graphical representation method to show the exact percentage of people falling in different categories. As I am analyzing close ended questionnaires so in this manner graphical representation will helps a lot. Responses will be shown both in absolute values and percentage..

ii) SELF ANALYSIS:

At second stage I have done self analysis for that I have define each question in detail that by going through all the results and evaluation what impression I had get. The trend it shows is either positive or negative? And what impacts does it create on youngsters and how it is affecting our society. In self analysis I have discussed each question individually and have written that by going through all the questionnaires what was the thing I found common in all of them.

3.5.SAMPLING:

I have employed convenience sampling, in convenience sampling method the researcher chooses those samples from target population which is convenient to him and he doesn't have enough resources to take a proportionate probability sample.

I have chosen this convenience sampling method because it is practically impossible for me to cover entire young population of Pakistan. Also I can't divide it into segments and then try to cover them through probability sampling as it requires lots of time and resources. Also not everyone I approach is willing to participate or contribute to my research study so I have to employed convenience sampling method so as to select those who are willing to participate and from whom it was easy for me to get information. My research problem revolves around the grown up kids from the age group of 14-18 years. I have kept 14 years as minimum because at this stage kids get responsible for their answers and generally they build up their own perspective and point of view for most of the matters. It's an age limit where youngsters don't have as many reasons and objective to use internet as compare to the elders who have professional researches and deadlines to be met and for that they need different kind of freedom and environment.

SAMPLE SIZE:

My research data sample size is

35 teenagers (for survey)

02 students (interview)

02 teachers (interview)

LIM ITATIONS:

The main problem I face was to collect references as our department library was always closed and was hardly found open. And it did not provide with wide range of books to so one cannot get satisfactory data from there.

As I was collecting data from youngsters so most of the time they didn't get it seriously and take everything as fun activity. This makes communication harder with them. As they don't understand how authencity of data is important as I am doing it for research purpose. Another problem faced by me was that youngsters were not very comfortable in front of their parents while discussing about their online activities. It was mainly faced in the kids from age of 16 and up.

Frequent power break down also turns out to be real trouble as it becomes almost impossible to evaluate data in one go.

5.1. SELF ANALYSIS:

Question 1)

According to the result of question number one mostly youngsters serve 2-3 hours daily in front of internet. Children from the age of 15-18 usually serve more than4- 5 hours daily and sometimes more than that. As they have more freedom than the younger ones they serve more amount of time on internet.

Too much time in front of a screen can deprive children of time for organized sports and other social activities that are beneficial to child development. [14]

Question 2)

According to the result majority of the youngsters have freedom to use internet at any time they want. The second most common answer among all the youngsters was that they use internet mostly at night.

It's quite shocking to see school and college going students serve 2-3 hours daily on internet, especially at night. In school it makes sure that kids reach school on time and don't have any option like late entering in class. In such situation it's not healthy to see this growing trend in youngsters of surfing internet till late night and then getting up early in morning so they can make up to their schools and colleges. Using computer anytime shows that young teens are not at all restricted by their parents and don't have a strict watch of which sites they are surfing and what links are they using.

Question 3)

The most common answer for the question what page they open as soon as they sign in is facebook/ twitter. These are the social networking websites where people can only chat with others, can use different games application and can follow up their favorite celebrity. It didn't serve any educational or informative purpose. The other most common answer was, they open their messenger or check their emails.

Question 4)

Mostly teens use it for chatting and social websites. According to them what they prioritized more was daily surfing net for using social websites so they can't get out of touch from their friends. It's the most important work to do on internet according to them. Second most common answer was gaming online screen games is the work for which they serve hours in front of internet is not very satisfying. After that internet is mostly use for downloading songs, movies and software's for videos and games.

Only 8% of youngsters use internet frequently for research activities. The trend which shows from the analysis of this question is that children's have a high trend of using internet for social purposes and even they themselves knew it but didn't realize the after effects.

Question 5)

Youngsters often read online newspapers and books on internet. Sometimes they read online material available. Other most common answer was quite shocking as facts shows that majority of youngsters never read anything online they don't like to read anything online and they accept this fact. None of them read daily any news or book on internet daily.

Other most common answer was that majority feels it hard to read on screen. As its tiring for eyes and to sit in one posture for hours in order to read is not at all comfortable so it's so tiring for them to read it on screen.

Question 6)

It was quite alarming for me to see that majority of the kids when asked about individual opinion that is internet providing them any information said no. while at the starting of my research whenever I have asked any kid about why internet surfing is important the words they mostly used were" information and awareness "but to see results totally different is quite shocking.

Question7)

The answer of this question also follows the trend as above the most common purpose which internet serve is keeping in touch with friends and family. The second most common trend observed is that youngsters feel the liberty that they can download anything easily for free.

Very few believe that the most helpful thing you can get from, internet is knowledge about recent searches and developments. Some people think it's helping them getting more aware about local and international media and fashion updates.

Question 8)

Majority says that they sometimes do researches on internet. Second most common opinion found in youngsters is of doing research a night before assignment submission.

There are many teenagers who said that they never do online searches.

Question 9)

It's important to have a command over your language in which you are studying as it helps you to deliver your thought properly. Language is a medium in which you think and get ideas. Having command over your language always helps you and leads you in right direction.

Some of the people think that internet surfing also helps children in improving their language skill and by this they get command over language like English which is not our mother tongue also.

But when it was inquired the result was completely opposite. Majority of the youngsters think that it's not at all helping them even its making their spelling and grammar more worst. As our kids usually use slang language for communication on internet.

Question 10)

This question inquires that does research and studies can be done without internet also. In response many thinks that it might be possible but majority also believes that it's not at all possible to make researches without using internet.

Some youngsters also believe that it's still possible to do studies without using internet as books really helps a lot.

5.2. PRIMARY DATA (Through depth interview):

I had an opportunity to talk to her regarding my research topic which is on excessive internet surfing. While answering my question about what effects it does on our generation? She said that that it's quite shocking to see that the youngsters these days have complete access to all kind of information but still miss that thirst for knowledge. She further added that this generation seems to be a confused generation as they have many point of focus in spite of one. She added that most of the time in discussion class majority of the class sits blank as they are not updated about the current happenings and researches and the ones who knows never get too sure about their information as they also don't have complete information about topic.

She said youngsters should not serve excessive amount of time in surfing internet as according to a new research study it states that excessive internet surfing is the major cause of depression in youngsters. According to her personal knowledge she believes internet surfing is not at all helping youngsters.

CONCLUSION:

After going through all my primary, secondary and original research I have learned many things of which the most important is that most of the times we perceive things in quite a wrong manner. The general perception of internet as an essential part of life is not completely wrong but completely true also.

Students of high school and colleges consider internet as an important part because they think there studies are highly dependent over it but it's not right completely. At this part of their student life where they are highly dependent over class room teaching and homework they don't need to serve an enormous amount of time in front of internet as their studies mainly depends over their course books.

Hardly any youngster use internet surfing daily for keeping his or her self updated about current affairs and recent searches as per according the result of survey mostly people agreed to this fact that reading online is more tiring that's why they never felt an urge to read anything online. This proves that still it's easier to study from printed form of books or newspapers as it's less tiring for eyes and you can adjust it according to your need.

The sole purpose of youngsters for using internet daily is to get in touch with friends through chatting and e-mails. They serve plenty of time exploring different online applications provided by social networking websites.

The most common uses of internet as stated by youngsters themselves are chatting, gaming and downloading which clearly shows that none of them is positive activity which can lead to any betterment. No doubt internet is full of advance searches but that's not the primary focus of our youngsters.

Internet surfing is also affecting the language skills of the youngsters as they use slang words and wrong spellings makes them suffer when they are asked to write any composition of their own in one language. The use of roman English is also creating adverse effects on the grammatical and verbal language skills.

The result I concluded after getting all these facts are that the excessive internet surfing is only a wastage of time for our younger generation. Inspite of giving all their time to internet the youngsters should be asked to get themselves busy in some good physical and positive skills.

As the primary focus of our youngsters in not to get information therefore the reason given for using of internet is just an understatement.

Recommendations:

Parents must have computer literacy. So that they can daily check web history and visit those links which have been mostly visited by their children.

In homes, where there is school and college going kids, computers should be kept at common sitting places where parents or elders can easily monitor their children that what they are actually doing on internet. Either they are using it for useful purpose or just wasting their time.

At younger age Children should not be provided with personal computers or laptops so they are forced to use common PCs at their homes restricting the use of computers behind the close doors.

In those cases where parents and elders are not present at homes whole day they can they can also ensure their child's safety by activating fire walls and applying security filters on internet.

Students should immediately be introduced to procedures that restrict their amount of time spent on internet by using any alarm clock or timer automatically installed in teenager's computers.

Students should be encouraged to explore other modes of communication with people so they don't remain bound to internet only. They should engage themselves in other activities also so that surfing the internet does not replace homework, social activities or other important interests.
