Commercial interest in mobile ad hoc network has grown due to the advances in wireless communications. MANET applications and deployments have been military oriented, thus non military applications have also grown substantially since then. With the rapid advances in mobile ad hoc network research, mobile ad hoc network have attracted considerable attention and interests from commercial business industry, as well as the standard community. The introduction of the technologies such as Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11 and hyperlan has greatly facilitated the deployment of ad hoc technology not only in the military field but also outside the military domain, and recently ad hoc networking application appeared mainly in specialized field such as emergency services, disaster recovery and environment monitoring. In addition, MANET flexibility makes this technology attractive for several applicative scenarios like in personal area networking, home networking, law enforcement operation, searching rescue operation and commercial and educational application.

Market needs and requirements differentiation

The Ad hoc network concept was originally developed for military use by the department of defense and this technology seems to be inevitable by the department of defense (DOD). Furthermore, finding a use for this technology in the commercial setting and solving the many issues related to this technology has become one of the most active development fields in the wireless community. Wireless ad hoc networks have several desirable qualities for military and commercial use. These networks do not need infrastructure, can be established almost anywhere, and are dynamic in nature. Because of the dynamic nature, they change over time as the nodes move around, joining or leaving the network. Mobile Ad hoc network (MANET) is an especially difficult task to explore because the technology is in an early stage and the commercial market is making new demands.

Beside that, mobile ad hoc nodes can build up a network at any given time communicate with other nodes at different places. In this way every node can establish a connection to every other node that is included in the MANET. Examples of nodes can be personal devices like, our mobile phones, Laptops, Personal Data Assistants (PDA's), Smaller and also other simpler devices which use wireless ad hoc networking.

From user's and designer's perspectives, can this new standard, system or technology

addresses a real need in current and future market? Justify the commercial advantages

and disadvantages of this new solution

Mobile ad hoc network has some characteristic which differ it from other network technologies. Although it is firstly used in military domain but later on it has been spread in many areas such as commercial, personal area networking, home networking, law enforcement operation, search rescue operation, sensor networking and education application. The other things that make mobile ad hoc network a part from other network technologies, it is infrastructureless and easily to be deployed anywhere and anytime. In MANET, each mobile terminal is an autonomous node, which may function as both a host and a router. In other words, besides the basic processing ability as a host, the mobile nodes can also perform switching functions as a router. So usually endpoints and switches are indistinguishable in MANET. Ad hoc can also be used in emergency rescue operations for disaster relief efforts, example in fire, flood, or earthquake. Emergency rescue operations must take place where non-existing or damaged communications infrastructure and rapid deployment of a communication network is needed. Information is relayed from one rescue team member to another over a small handheld. Other commercial scenarios include ship-to-ship ad hoc mobile communication, law enforcement. These consequences that differ mobile ad hoc network from the other network technologies which need to have a fix infrastructures for their use.

Your comments on the commercial potential of your chosen topic

Aside from military domain and commercial Application there are also other application areas such as cooperative and sensors. In cooperatives community of interest like small town government, infrastructure lacking world region, group of interested individuals or clubs can own and operate network infrastructure together. In this case, MANET technology could easily be deployed to support a self-organizing, adaptive infrastructure. This will be desirable in disadvantages rural regions and developing countries with lack of resources or an environment not suited for significant fixed infrastructure developing and services. MANET technology can be used to help building and operating inexpensive network infrastructure service. Sensor network may be more scaled and capable of using MANET technology. Commercial, environment and military are all interesting in this network technology. MANET technology can support broad applications of self-organizing and distributed sensor network.

PART E: Discussion and Conclusions

summary of the technical and commercial evaluations

On the technical evaluation side, security, reliability and availability are three crucial aspect of the mobile ad hoc network. Especially in security sensitive application, since MANET relies on wireless communication medium, it is important to deploy a security protocol to protect the privacy of the transmission. The requirement regarding confidentiality, integrity and availability are the same as for any other public communication networks. However, the implementation schemes of the key management, authentication, and authorization are quite different. Different types of threats and attacks against routing in MANET should be analyzed leading to the requirement of mobile ad hoc network routing security, and advance solutions are needed for the secure routing of MANET.

Wireless communication is exposed to many types of problems due to interference, low signals and also the infrastructureless. As from reliability and availability issues, beside low level error making and recovery mechanisms such as error detection and error correction, special attention should be paid to studying fault-tolerant routing algorithm. In multihop ad hoc wireless networks, there exists an inherent attribute of redundant routing paths between nodes. Exploiting this property, it is possible to provide fault-tolerant routing schemes, for increasing the reliability and the security of the target routing algorithm. Since overhead occurs in this reliable increasing algorithm, research should also study the tradeoff between performance and reliability in order to measure the most efficient solution.

On the commercial evaluation side, with the increase of the communication devices as well as progress in wireless communication, mobile ad hoc network is gaining importance with the increasing number of widespread applications. Ad hoc networking can be applied anywhere that there is little or no communication infrastructure or the existing infrastructure is expensive or inconvenient to use. Besides the legacy applications that move from traditional infrastructure environment into ad hoc context, a great deal of new services can and will be generated for the new environment. Moreover, mobile ad hoc network can be used in emergency operation for disaster relief effort such as flood or earthquake. Emergency rescue operation must take place where non-existing or damaged communication infrastructure and rapid deployment of a communication network is needed. Information is relayed from one rescue team member to another over small communication devices. There is also other commercial scenario such as ship to ship mobile ad hoc network communication.

summary of your comments and suggestions

Firstly, we knew that mobile ad hoc network has been used in the military domain and Later on the MANET application has spread into other areas such as commercial business industrials and most importantly in the educational application. The main issue which attracted the military to the use of this network technology is that, because it is infrastructureless means it is deployable wherever at anytime, the nodes are mobile and its nodes can work as both, hosts and router for forwarding the Data to the other nodes. As in mobile ad hoc network the devices are mobile and can cooperate and efficiently communicate without fix infrastructure, this will significantly influence and simplify our lives. The possible situations where MANET will play an important role will touch almost every aspect of our lives. People who are much dependent on their technical devices will be able to move to a level where a simple device will allow them to not only communicate with every one and everywhere but also access information stored in some place miles away from their present location.

We suggest in the next generation of wireless communication systems, there should be a need for the rapid deployment of independent mobile users. Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) provide communication between all nodes in the network topology without the presence of a centralized authority; although all nodes can function as routers which gives MANETs two of its most desirable characteristics; adaptable and quick to deploy. some areas of use still establishing efficient communication networks for mobile workers in desolate regions or in disaster areas where existing networks have been destroyed or do not exist is in need. To communicate in an efficient way proper routing protocols are needed. Furthermore, there is no single protocol that fits all networks perfectly. The protocols have to be chosen according to network characteristics, such as density, size and the mobility of the nodes.

Your predicted future technical directions with arguments and evidences

The prediction future on the technical direction of mobile ad hoc network is based on the future its improvement. The technology of Mobile Ad hoc Networking is somewhat synonymous with Mobile Packet Radio Networking a term coined via during early military research in the 70's and 80's Mobile Mesh Networking a term that appeared in The Economist regarding the structure of future military networks and Mobile, Multihop, Wireless Networking perhaps the most accurate term, although a bit cumbersome. There is current and future need for dynamic ad hoc networking technology. The emerging field of mobile and nomadic computing, with its current emphasis on mobile IP operation, should gradually broaden and require highly-adaptive mobile networking technology to effectively manage multihop, ad hoc network clusters which can operate autonomously or, more than likely to be attached at some points to the fixed Internet. Some applications of MANET technology could include industrial and commercial applications involving cooperative mobile data exchange. In addition, mesh-based mobile networks can be operated as robust, inexpensive alternatives or enhancements to cell-based mobile network infrastructures. There are also existing and future military networking requirements for robust, IP-compliant data services within mobile wireless communication networks [1]--many of these networks consist of highly-dynamic autonomous topology segments. Also, the developing technologies of "wearable" computing and communications may provide applications for MANET technology. When properly combined with satellite-based information delivery, MANET technology can provide an extremely flexible method for establishing communications for fire/safety/rescue operations or other scenarios requiring rapidly-deployable communications with survivable, efficient dynamic networking. There are likely other applications for MANET technology which are not presently realized or envisioned. It is simply put, improved IP-based networking technology for dynamic, autonomous wireless networks.
