Assume that you are responsible in creating the system design specifications for new office computers. Provide system specifications for the above identified employees and students laboratory while considering different types of computer systems ( Eg: Desktop, laptop etc ) which are most suitable for them. Consider the computer Input, Output and other hardware devices and the necessary software to satisfy the user requirements. ( LO 1.2 , LO1.3 , LO 2.1 , M 1.1 )

2.1 Computer Systems

Hardware

Software

Hardware

This section gives a description of the features and the functionality of the parts of a computer.

The processor

The processor is incapable of learning. It is a device that can only follow the instructions that have been given to it by the programmer (Figure 1.4)

(Figure 1.4)

Memory

The memory considered in this section is divided into two basic types. Random Access Memory (RAM) and Read Only Memory (ROM). The RAM can be explained as a device that temporarily store data. RAM can be read from and also written into. The key feature of the RAM is that when power of the computer is switched off the data in the RAM is lost (Volatile memory).

Input and Output Devices

Input Devices

The user can use devices like the keyboard, mouse or trackball and joystick to provide commands and data into the computer. Device like, the microphone, scanner and digital cameras help the processor to receive data from its environment. Any device that can feed data or information to a computer is referred to as an input device.

Output Devices

All information which is outputted by the processor through the output devices can either be seen, heard or felt. Devices like the Monitor or LCD panel and projectors display information whereas a speaker would provide audible output. A feedback joystick would provide an output which can be felt by the user. Any device that can be used to output information from a computer is known as an output device. It is also important to note that certain devices have functionality that fall into both input and output categories. For example a touch-screen display and a feedback joystick function as both input devices and output devices.

Software

Software is a collection of instructions that enables a user to interact with the computer or have the computer perform specific tasks for them. Without any software the computer would be useless. For example, you wouldn't be able to interact with the computer without a software operating system.

Different computer systems

Laptops and Netbook

PC (personal computer) or desktops

Minicomputers

Mainframes

Laptops and Netbook

These are small, portable computer systems. Laptops often contain very powerful processors and have capabilities very close to those of PCs their major drawbacks are smaller screens, smaller memory, and fewer peripheral Input/output devices which are, however, portable. These single-user computers are implemented in the form of microcomputers. The prefix micro denotes the inclusion of a microprocessor that resides on a single chip and serves as the CPU. Other components also are included, of which the critical ones are a keyboard for data input, a screen (monitor) for information display, memory chips for temporary storage, and a hard disk for data storage.

PC (personal computer) or desktops

These computers also are of the microcomputer type. The basic components of a microcomputer. The RAM and ROM form the main memory that stores system and application programs, and data. The ROM contains only part of the operating system, and most often the part that initializes the computer. The software stored in the ROM is called firmware. Resource interface units form the required glue logic for the implementation of the required data exchange protocols. The control bus transfers the control signals produced by the microprocessor. To access an element in the memory or a peripheral device, the microprocessor first issues the address of that item on the address bus. The address bus is unidirectional, from the processor to the other units. While the latter value is still present on the address bus, the microprocessor issues the appropriate control signals to read or write from the corresponding location. The address issued by the microprocessor is decoded by external logic to choose the appropriate memory module or I/O device. The data is finally transferred on the bidirectional data bus.

Minicomputers

High-performance cabinet-sized computers that can be used simultaneously by a few dozens of users. They are often used in engineering and scientific applications. They have been replaced recently by advanced workstations and networks of workstations.

Mainframes

Very powerful computers that can serve many dozens or hundreds of users simultaneously. IBM has produced numerous computers of this type. They have been replaced recently in many occasions by networks of workstations.
