TIFF is one of the most popular image file formats used on the web today. Tiff files are large in size and high in quality which means it takes up a lot of space when saving. It is mostly used when saving bit map images for example digital photography. It is one of the three popular formats along with JPEG and PNG suitable for representing multi-colour images. TIFF graphics can also be black and white or gray-scaled. The TIFF image file format is based on a compression method that doesn't lose any of the pixels, allowing for an image to be stored without losing even a percent of its original quality. Also a Tiff file image can be edited and formatted and still not lose the quality, which many people prefer to the JPEG image which can change. An LZW compression is when bytes are taken out of a pixel and the image quality is affected. They tend to be saved as GIF files which is not as preferred as TIFF files.

JPEG: JPEG is a standardised image compression mechanism. JPEG is designed for compressing either full-colour or grey-scale digital images. The file size is smaller than some other images, so it takes up less memory, which is one reason that it is a popular format. The compression method is usually lossy, meaning that some original image information is lost and cannot be restored (possibly affecting image quality.) There is an optional lossless mode defined in the JPEG standard; however, that mode is not widely supported in products. JPEG is also a common format for publishing Web graphics since the JPEG compression significantly reduces the file size of images.

Raw image files: RAW images are uncompressed digital photos that save image data exactly the way the image was captured by camera's sensor. By changing the settings most digital cameras apply exposure and colour temperature adjustments immediately when the photo is taken. The resulting image is then saved in a compressed format typically JPEG to the camera's memory card. However, when shooting in RAW mode, the exposure and colour temperature settings are not applied to the image and the photo is saved in an uncompressed format. The resulting image is called a raw image file. Because raw images are not compressed, they take up significantly more disk space than JPEG files. However, because the original image detail in raw images is not compromised by image compression, they are higher quality than JPEG images. Because digital cameras store raw image data directly as it is captured by the camera's sensor, cameras made by different manufacturers save raw images in different formats. While it can be difficult to keep track of the various raw formats, most image-editing programs that support raw image files such as Adobe Photoshop.

Secure digital card, micro SD and Mini SD cards- A Secure Digital (SD) card is a tiny memory card used to make storage portable among various devices, such as car navigation systems. A micro SD card is a removable flash memory card which can be used in a variety of electronic gadgets. They are commonly used in digital cameras, mobile phones, portable media players and Nintendo SD flash carts.

There is a variety of SD memory cards including SanDisk, Transcend and Samsung memory cards and these all come in a variety of memory sizes ranging from 2GB onwards, up to anything as large as 32GB.

Commercially, the SD mobile memory is the smallest available with dimensions of just 15mm x 11mm x 1mm which is about a quarter of the size of a standard SD card. You can find adapters that will enable a micro SD card to be used with devices that are intended for SD, mini-SD. The SD mobile memory is the same as the TransFlash card and both can be used in devices meant for each other with the only difference being, that the micro SDHC card adds support for SDIO mode which enable non-memory cards like Bluetooth and GPS.

Both TransFlash and the micro mobile memory card are the same because the format of the mobile memory was originally created by SanDisk who called it T-Flash, which then became TransFlash.

Compact flash cards:

Compact flash cards are very small removable large storage device that relies on flash memory technology, a storage technology that does not require a battery to retain data. Compact Flash cards can support 3.3V and 5V operation, in contrast to other small-form factor flash memory cards that can only operate at one voltage. There are two types of Compact Flash cards to accommodate different capacities:

Type I (CF-1) cards are 3.3mm thick while

Type II (CF-ll) cards are 5.5mm thick.

Memory sticks:

Memory sticks are handy devices that can be used to copy and store data from computer hard drives. Developed as an alternative data storage method to older storage devices like floppy disks that once were common modes of storing information. Over time the concept of the memory stick was licensed to a number of other companies that produce computer related equipment. Over the years, the memory stick has continued to evolve. Newer releases of the stick allowed the device to keep pace with the increased demand for music and video files, and other types of data storage. Memory Sticks are designed to store data and to enable the transfer of data between devices equipped with Memory Stick slots. They allow you to share text, images, movies and sound files with ease.

Multi Media Card:

A Multi Media Card (MMC) functions to serve as an external storage for data, and as a way for transferring that data from one device to another. The device must have a Multi Media Card slot in order to transfer the data. MMC also works well with Secure Digital writers and readers. It uses flash memory to make storage portable among various devices, such as car navigation systems, eBooks, and digital cameras, music players, and video camcorders, and personal computers.

USB flash disk

Flash drive is a small storage device that can be used to transport files from one computer to another. A flash drive is easy to use. Once you have created a paper or other work, simply plug your flash drive into a USB port. The USB port will appear on the back of a desktop computer's PC tower or on the side of a laptop. USB flash drives have less storage capacity than an external hard drive, but they are smaller and more durable because they do not contain any internal moving parts. Unlike most removable drives, a USB drive does not require rebooting after it's attached, does not require batteries or an external power supply. USB drives are available in capacities ranging up to about 65GB. With a USB drive, work can be retained for long periods.

xD picture cards:

An xD-picture card is a type of memory storage device often used with digital cameras or related devices to store sounds, pictures, music, and other types of digital data. The amount of storage space that you need for your digital camera can vary. If you thousands of pictures, people can upgrade their camera to include the 2GB xd-Picture Card. However, they can also purchase cards that have as little as 16MB of storage space.

There are three main types of xD-Picture Cards Type M, H, and M+. M Type was the first storage type that originally had limited space of about 16MB to 512MB. The H type cards were an upgrade as they were able to hold anywhere up to 2GB of storage space, but these cards were discontinued by manufacturers due to the high cost of production. However, in August 2008 the M+ card was released that achieved 1 to 2GB of storage space more efficiently.
