An audio sequencer is a software tool for computer to edit, manage and synthesize computer-generated music. These softwares are also called MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) softwares. Many audio sequencers have characteristics for limited audio music notation and most of them are able to display audio signals in a piano like roll annotation.

A sequencer is defined as a Multi Track MIDI combined with Digital Audio Recording application Software. It is the most important feature of all computer-related recording studios. The most important feature of these audio sequencer softwares is that they all are MIDI compatible, and hence can communicate with each other. They all uses a specific protocol called MIDI 1.0.

There are wide ranges of such musical softwares available in market today. Some softwares are free or open source and some demands some money. These softwares are made keeping different platforms in mind. Some are made for Linux, some for Windows and some for Mac OS. Below a small list of such products:

Rosegarden is a general purpose music composer and an all-round audio MIDI sequencer that provides a reliable editing environment for music. The sequencer runs on Linux platform and provides an ideal environment for music composers, music students, musicians, and for small uses at home or other recording environments.

Rosegarden needs a hardware called MIDI synthesizer for synthesis process. MIDI synthesizer is a soft synthesizer like TiMidity++, or may be a synthesizer plugin. Recently released versions of Rosegarden cope well with DSSI audio synthesizer plugin.

Rosegarden provides all the editing tools that are needed to generate music with your own ideas. You can just drag the music signals with the mouse and align them to create "music segments" and can also double-click them to edit the segments. Editing windows like the matrix editor, event editor and notation editor ideally have the same interface, where you can select and drag music signals to move, squash and stretch. You can also enter notes with the help of a MIDI keyboard by real-time recording or by step-by-step process.

Sony ACID Pro

Sony ACID Pro is a pro-digital audio workstation used for editing, mixing, and composing music templates. The product was launched in the market in1988 and was initially called "ACID pH1". In the list of music composers, Acid Pro was the first one of its kind. It provides a very easy method for music related functions where one can just drag-and-drop a music file into an Acid track, and that track would automatically conform itself to the key and tempo of the music track, with no sonic erosion.

GarageBand is an audio sequencer software application which allows users to edit, create, and mix music files. GarageBand is manufactured by Apple Inc. GarageBand is a music sequencer which can play and record multiple audio tracks simultaneously. Audio built-in filters provide the audio track an enhanced recording guitar tool.

Synthesis Process

The process is simple and can be studied with the manual provided with the software. Beat ruler displays the beats and their measures. Use the beat ruler to prompt the playhead of the track to accurate beat position. Drag the loops to add tracks to them. Arrange the music composition by working the loops and the regions properly in tracks below the timeline.
