This chapter reviews on information technology that supporting the Android and iPhone Operating System. With the information technology support the creation of the activity, storage, processing, and the exchange of information, with the approach to the management and applications. The core of a smartphones consists of micro-electronics, microprocessor chip, which processes data, and also information, screen resolution, sound quality, etc. So when these all features combined together to become a good product to suit the preferences which consumer preferred.

1.1 - Background of research

Without any doubt, every of the products and services have their own history and gain fame and fortune story. So that Android and iPhone Operating system (iOS) operating system also the same. In the smart phone can be connected through any communication device to transcend national borders, for example, the applications that can found in the Google play (previously known as Android market) and Apple App store like "Line messenger, Whatsapp messenger, Talkbox messenger", etc. These applications are without any charges on the phone bills, it is connected via Wi-Fi network or the network operator itself. So wherever the people locations are, it can keep in touch via those applications in global world.

And the component of smartphones consists of the processor of the phone itself, when the first launched of the Android operating system processor is 600 MHz processor, 800 MHz processor, 832 MHz processor, 1.2 GHz processor, 1.4 GHz processor and even up to 1.6HHzand some are comes with dual core processor, and the latest is 1.4 GHz Quad-core processor. However, the Apple iPhone OS operating system is the main competitors of Android operating system. The iOS also will keep on launch and renew their own processor as well. The innovation of iOS processor is 620 MHz ARM 1176JZ (F)-S, 833 MHz ARM Cortex-A8, 1 GHz Apple A4, GHz Dual-core Apple A5. The first launched of the Android operating system is year of 2008 in September of 23 comes with Android 1.0. The features of the Android 1.0 are enabled the users to download and able to update the applications through the Google play, and the web browser of the android phone itself will updating everytime when a brand new system is launched.

Other than the web browser and android market, the android 1.0 also allowed users to access to web email servers, Gmail synchronization with the Gmail app, Google Calendar synchronization with the Calendar app, Google Talk instant messaging, and alerts are displayed in the status bar, with options to set the ringtone or vibration alarm. Except the Google services that provided by the Google Inc., the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support also one of the features that available in the Android 1.0.

The first launched of iPhone OS operating system is year of 2007 in June 29; iPhone 2G only supports Wi-Fi, GSM and Bluetooth, in a meaning to say that, its speed surfing the Internet is limited which compared with the Android 1.0. So this is the competitive basis between the Android and iOS operating system. The first launched of iPhone OS has a 2 megapixel camera, but does not have a video recorder.

1.2- Research problem

With the proof of success of the first launched of Android operating system. Therefore, the Android operating system itself has created an invisible threat to iPhone OS. So that, the competitors will launch the product or services which similar with among the competitors. The marketers are often used by organizations which experience increased competition and also have to respond by enhancing or extending the level of customer service which they are offering. This might include such things as broadening the range of their products or services and as well as increasing quality levels or giving delivery guarantees. Besides providing the quality guarantees to the customer, there are no fundamental change has been made to the physical design and organization of the operation itself, but it is expected to respond to marketing-led changes in competitive attitude from the customer or distributor. The operations function of the Android and iOS itself are tries to do this by developing its infrastructural resources such as planning the new features that can be add into the new product.

The reorganizer strategy would be used by Google Company and Apple Inc. This strategy implies a change in the way within the organization designs and manages its processed. This could mean investment which in new technology and a different way of organizing its methods of producing goods and services which provided in the past. The new processes often allow the users to use their through the applications existing in Google play flexibility which allows the operation if the companies to respond quickly and effectively to changes in the market, and it is not only providing the entertainment to users but also convenient to users when working, for example like, the Global Positioning System (GPS) can guide the user to get to the right places.

It has enhanced not only its structure but also its infrastructure. Usually this means a very high level of integration between product or service design, operations, and marketing in order not only to be flexible in the short term in response to competitive pressure, but also to introduce new products and services faster and more effectively than the competitors. "Sweeney (1998, p.799) illustrates in his study, he recommends the organizations to adapt the technologies changes. The path taken towards achieving an innovator strategy, however it is also important to those organizations when the management team try to implement strategy are recommended from marketer first to enhance their operations structure to achieve a reorganizer strategy, after which they can undertake the more difficult infrastructural changes towards an innovator strategy."

1.3 - Research question

The topic that concern by the Google Company and Apple Inc itself is why the customer goes for Android smartphone but not Apple smartphone or goes for Apple smartphone but not Android smartphone and they are competing with each other. The companies of android and iOS itself will emphasis the importance of performance objectives within for this competition of technology in global world, competitive factors will depend on a number of different influences and three in particular. There is the specific need of the company's customer groups, the activities of the company's competitors, and the stage of the product life cycle at which the product or service stands.

The different competitive factors imply and in a different performance objectives. The customers are expecting the company to satisfy their needs and wants, the users friendly will attract the attention to the customers and it will become a walking advertisement for the products and services. If the company ignores the needs and wants of the customers, of failure to complete the service that the customer wants, show carelessness and the customer simply stop to purchase the same brand to the certain product or services which provide by the operator, sometimes the needs and wants of the customer are sophisticated, because have grown accustomed to better things, the customer have money to spend, some of the customer are egotist and sensitive. It is important to customer to the company itself appreciate the business.

1.4 - Research significance

When customers make a purchase, they are not simply buying a product or service. They are buying a set of expected benefits to meet their needs and expectations. This is known as the concept of the product and service. For example, when customers buy a smartphone, when they choosing which product to by between the Android and iOS phone, they will influence by the design of the phone itself. The ideas or feedbacks from the customer are useful and important to the company. The marketing is responsible for keeping an eye and ear on the market place in order to identify new opportunities and possible products and services that might be appropriate; there are many market research tools for gathering data from customers in a formal and structured way, including questionnaires and interviews. These techniques, however, usually tend to be structured in such a way as only to test out the idea or feedback from customer or check products or services against predetermined criteria. Listening to the customers, in a less-structured way, is sometimes seen as a better means of generating new ideas.

Listening to customers, many suggestions and ideas may come from customers on a day-to-day basis. Customers may write to complain about a particular product or service, or make suggestions for its improvement on replacement. Ideas may also come in the form of suggestions to staff of the company during the purchase of the product or delivery of the service. Unfortunately, some staff may not see the passing on of this information as an important role; there may not even be the mechanisms in place to facilitate it. Although the Google Company and Apple Inc. do have implicit mechanisms to capture ideas in a structured and formal way, few have internal mechanisms for passing on good ideas or snippets from customers.

Ideas from Research and Development (R&D), one formal function found in many product-based organizations are research and development (R&D). As its name implies, its role is twofold. Research usually means attempting to develop new knowledge and ideas in order to solve a particular problem or to grasp an opportunity. In this chapter are not mainly concerned with the development part of R&D - for example, exploiting new ideas that might be afforded by new materials such as new technologies such as satellite communication. Different industries rely on R&D for their new product or service ideas to different extents.

1.5 - Scope of research

The scope of research is within the range of ages 13 to 30 and the research location is within Ipoh area targeted those who are interested in smartphones or existing users. How this group of consumer choose their phone is the topic most concerned by the Google Company and Apple Inc. Products and services are usually the first thing which customers see of a company, so it is important that they are designed to meet their needs and expectations. Customers might also expect that designs and features of the phones are updated at frequent intervals to reflect fashion, technological advances or their changing needs. So, in addition to the intrinsic merit of its product and service designs, it is also the continual development of designs and the creation of totally new designs which help to shape an organization's competitive position.

All the existing products and services of the Android and iOS operating system can be considered as having three aspects:

A concept, which is the set of expected benefits that the customer is buying;

A package of 'component' products and services that provide those benefits defined in the concept;

The process by which the operation products the package of 'component' products and services.

1.7 - Summary

In conclusion, the operations strategy has content and process. The content of an operations strategy deals with the relative importance of the performance objectives to the operation of Google Company and Apple Inc. itself, as well as with giving general guidance to decision-making activities within the operation. And the process of operations strategy adopted by the companies is the procedure which is used within an operation to formulate the operations strategy.

Chapter 2 - Literature Review

2.0 Introduction

This chapter reviews on the concepts and theories for major constructs of the research. The chapter consists of history of research, literature review, evaluation of key studies, and chapter summary. And also including the comparison which between the android and iOS operating system, relevant theory like SWOT analysis, the strength, weaknesses, opportunity, and threats between the android and iOS operating system.

2.1 Company profile

2.1.1 Company value and competencies

Android is a mobile operating system which is one of the leading smatphones which available in market and the major competitors of iOS. Android is a software stack for mobile devices which consists the operating system itself, which enable users to install a lot of applications from Google Play. Android was developed by Android Inc and has been acquired by Google to form open Headset alliance [a group of 65 hardware, software, and telecom companies]. Applications for android devices are written in Java language and it is partially open source. In fact, developers can use the core OS functions to develop applications unlike iPhone OS which is a closed system.

Except the smartphones market has been dominated by the android and iOS system, over the past decade, smartphones has taken the world by storm and recently, tablets have entered into the arena of competitor as well. In another word, these mobile devices are having a significant impact on our lives and are in fact redefining the way we access information and communicate with others and this is because not only is the hardware, specialized software, equipment operation and the most important is that their operating system.

Just like a PC can run different operating systems like Windows, Linux, etc. Or different versions of the same operating system like Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 etc, and most smartphones can also run different versions of the operating system they were made for and in exceptional cases; they might even be able to run operating systems they weren't made for. However, an Android phone will only run a version of Android while an iPhone will only run an ios version.

For the Apple Inc and Google Company, they need to know competitors, what the competitors doing, and the business strategy that used by the Apple Inc and Google Company.

2.2 History of research

2.2.1 The history and background of Android system operating and iPhone OS operating system

There are varieties of versions of the Android operating system. Android started to develop with Cupcake, Donut, Gingerbread, Honeycomb and now Ice Cream Sandwich versions and making itself the most popular mobile operating system of today. The competitive advantage of android operating system is the system itself can run multiple apps at the same time; for example, this will include email notifications of the mobile phones, listening to music and recording GPS data. On the other hand, Android keeps the information visible on the home screen, if you are using the iPhone, you need to read their list of applications, and need to exit every time before you launch another application.

Android runs on literally hundreds of devices including smartphones and tablets. With multiple new releases each year, the operating system is continuously evolving. Currently, the latest version for smartphones is 4.1 Jelly Bean while that for tablets is 4.0 Ice-Cream. Android has already beaten iOS to become the most widely used Smartphone operating system in the world, but then Android market system is still lags behind the Apple store in terms of the number of apps by roughly 100,100 applications, that is why the consumers hesitate when purchase between these two products.

Some device manufacturers use their own proprietary operating system for their phones and tablets. A good example is Apple, with iOS being the operating system developed by them for their iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad devices. By now, iOS has improved a lot and as of the current version 5.1, it supports multi-tasking. And the jailbreaking also continues play an important role in iOS devices, it is because after jailbreak, the iPhone users are enables to use more applications on the phone. With the release of the first iPhone in 2007 running the first version of iOS. At the time of its release, iOS wasn't even capable of performing what most other smartphones operating systems.

The introduction of the iPad in 2010 only added to the popularity of iOS. Much like the case of smartphones, the iOS itself was creating a modern tablet boom and leading to other competitors joining the market. With the iPad and the iPad 2and The New iPad, Apple still leads the tablet market share by a huge margin.

2.3 Literature review (SWOT analysis)

2.3.1 The introduction of the SWOT analysis

Building a successful competitive strategy it is requires a business to magnify its strengths and overcome or compensate for its weaknesses. Key success factors come in a variety of different patterns depending on the company. Just like there are factors that determine a company's ability to compete successfully in an industry. Every company in an industry must understand the key success factors driving the industry.

2.3.2 The SWOT analysis of the Android and iOS operating system

2.3.2.1 Strengths of the Android and iOS system

Before the year of 2012, the system of android phones that provides software and applications is called Android market, but after improvements services from Google Inc, it has been changed to "Google Play". Currently, the Google play has more than 200,000 applications. Google play is more open in accepting third party applications meanwhile they do not censor the applications and is entirely driven by their customers. Unlikely, apple decides which applications reaches the customers, and therefore little room for the customers to decide on which application that works and suits them very well, meanwhile the iOS itself is an closed system.

The latest model of the iOS is Apple iPhone 5, it comes with the "Siri", a personal voice assistant allowing the users to vocally communicate with the iPhone. It also comes with a 4.0 inch screen with a resolution of 640 x 960 pixels, but on the inside there's a twice more powerful dual-core A5 processor. It is much better than the older version if iPhone. It also improves connectivity a notch, bringing 14.4Mbps HSPA download internet speeds.

2.3.2.2 The weaknesses of Android and iOS operating system

The battery life of the Android operating system also another issue those need to solve by the Google Inc, especially on the mobile devices. In the same way, weaknesses are negative internal factors that inhibit a company's ability to accomplish its mission, goals, and objectives. In fact, iOS will lack the inability to current technology, and an inferior of the location are examples of weaknesses. Besides that, the positive side should reflect important skills, knowledge, or resources that detract from the company's ability to compete.

2.3.2.3 The opportunities of the Android and iOS operating system

An opportunity is once the entrepreneurs have taken an internal inventory of company strengths and weaknesses, they must turn to the external environment to identify any opportunities and threats that might have a significant impact on the business. Therefore, to the company, the opportunities are positive external that the company can exploit to accomplish its mission, goals and objectives. Therefore, the number of potential opportunities of the Google Inc is limitless, so that, our companies are needed to analyse only those factors that are most significant to the business.

2.3.2.4 The threats of the Android and iOS system

Threats to the Google Inc can take a variety of forms, such as competitors entering the local market, a government mandate regulating a business activity, technology advances making a company's product obsolete, and so on. Certainly, although the Apple Inc itself cannot control the threats themselves, such as the business plan must be prepare for shielding their businesses from these threats. The interactions of strengths and weaknesses and opportunities and threats can be the most revealing aspects of using SWOT analysis as part of a strategic plan.

2.4 Summary

In conclusion, sizing up the competition gives a business owner a more realistic view of the market and his or her company's position in it. Yet not every competitor warrants the same level of attention in the strategic plan. Direct competitions offer the same products and services, and customers often compare prices, features, and deals from these competitors as they shop.

Chapter 3 - Research methodology

3.0 - Introduction

There are several ways to get the information for the surveys. The research method consists of: questionnaire, interviews, communicate with people, social network on internet and telephone surveys. In this chapter I am going to use the questionnaire to conduct my surveys. Questionnaires are the most common ways that taken by the marketers to perform the surveys when launching a new products.

3.3 - Method of research

Sampling is an important elements when conduct the questionnaire survey. So that when put the questionnaires online to interviewers can save cost for the company and easy to manage.

3.3.1 - Sampling method

Non-random is targeted to a specific group of people, in the questionnaire surveys will targeting to the teenagers and the people who using the smartphones. Non-random is a catch-all for other methods of selecting the sample, and this may cause some sections of the population were excluded from the sample form. In the most general form of the non-random sampling method is the selection of a quota sampling. Identify the population is very important when survey, because the data collection can be a costly exercise and a lot of people will be able to come into contact with a lot of independent investigation, and it will only be a waste this valuable resource of the Google Inc or Apple Inc.

3.3.2 - Questionnaire

The questionnaire are the establishment collections about the data information of viewpoint from the consumer or ineterviewer. The questionnaire can be utilize as the foundation of a formation access by a marketer itself, or completed by the subject by interviewers. When the marketer decided the solution of should carry out the questionnaire, and requirement to achieve the balance in practical considerations equilibrium, and the reasons that choose questionnaire because it is quick and efficiency and it is easy to ask people to fill up the questionnaire form.

3.3.3 - Tabulation of data

3.3.4 - Likert scaling

The likert scale is commonly used studies in survey and it is used through requesting the interviewers whether agrees or does not agree with a statement.

Chapter 5 - Conclusion and recommendations

5.0 - Introduction

This chapter is review on the overall conclusion and recommendations which completed in the previous chapter analysis of data. And this chapter consists of limitations of study and suggestion of further research.

5.1 - Conclusion

5.1.1 - Variable 1 (Strength)

Based on the questionnaire surveys that conducted in the previous, the statement of the consumer satisfy with the features of Android OS is disagree.

Every of the product also have their own product life cycle so that when facing the competitor, Google Inc. must keeping up with the trends especially in the world of information technology (IT). In fact, not all the consumers will read through the updated news which available in official website or journal article of Android OS. Some of the consumers are early adopters, this kind of people are keen to buy the latest product, they are tend to stick with 3C product, which is communication, consumer electronic, and computer.

5.1.2 - Variable 2 (Weakness)

The weaknesses will directly affect consumer's preference for Android OS over iPhone OS is agreed.

Android OS security and privacy issue is pay close attention by the public. Two of the major smartphones is Android OS and iPhone OS. The iPhone OS itself have the close system and require to jailbreak, once it done meaning to say that the firewall of the phone become unsafe and allow all non-original apps. Between, the Android OS also created a set of policies that relate with legal action to protect the user and also enforce the trusted security apps in the Google play to against the viruses that spread through the apps, even thought the incoming call and messages from cellular network.

5.1.3 - Variable 3 (Opportunity)

The opportunity will directly affect consumer's preference for Android OS over iPhone OS is agreed.

The market segmentation characterize groups of manufacturer that joining one or more and have the common specifications which adopting the Android OS by Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG, Acer, Toshiba and etc, the leading incorporate in global world. The Internet technology gives went to the person new product of market and linear extends other place. 5.2 - Recommendations

5.2.1 - Variable 1 (Strength)

Most consumers prefer official websites which relate the online customer service, and the online store consist all the services that let the consumer to choose their preferences for smartphones, and the services may includes the hotline for consumer to customer service, for example like, they need more the specifications for occupation but not entertainment so that the Qwerty keyboard, mailing services, calendar schedule which synching to Google plus (Google+) is important for them. To understand the consumer behavior are required for marketer by follow up the trend build a strong relationship with consumer through the online strategy.

After sales services are considerable question concern by the consumer, whether how they get the warranty, get to the right place and contact list must be prepared to consumer, otherwise it would bring unknown consequences to the Google Inc over Android OS. The building of prestige of an organization may use few years period of time, but the spoilage can be within one day.

5.2.2 - Variable 2 (Weakness)

The sizes and quality are the major factor will bring about force closes of apps and over heats easily problem. The suggestion is to move all the apps and data into the memory card form internal memory and beware the quality of battery, do not use any battery that unrecognized or low quality.

The battery backup are poor among the all the smartphones even Android OS. The consumer may close the applications through the Task manager in setting, it will close all the applications that running in the background which is inactive. However, it doesn't 100% guarantee safety and the system itself will run smooth after clearing the background data. User may also download the applications from Google play that able to remove the cache running services it so called "history eraser".

The techniques that extend the battery are able set it through the setting from the mobile phone, which is set the processor functional to maximum level, turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS location services and disabling the packet data network. When turning off all these setting not only to extend battery life but in order to increase the security to against the hackers or viruses from somewhere else to pinpoint or track the location of user or stealing away the important data which stores in the phone.

5.2.3 - Variable 3 (Opportunity)

Google Inc produce the Android OS are giving away a lot of chances to the well-known electronic companies like, Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG, Acer, Toshiba, etc, this are able to gain the competitive advantage in global world and also to improve the lifestyle and quality of people in field of career and entertainment, yet compare to iPhone OS itself are close system by using all sources produce from Apple Inc. With Android OS, user are able to sync and export or import personal data to the cloud (Google server/Google plus). The Google services are includes sharing all sources of media like, pictures, videos, Google map, and YouTube video network. So that the user can easily search and save the data information that they wish find.

5.2.4 - Variable 4 (Threats)

The major competitor of Android OS is iPhone OS form Apple Inc; one of the developers of Android OS, Samsung companies had been sued by Apple Inc in global world, which location in America, Japan, Korea, and Germany. And these lawsuit cases are unforgettable experience in the electrical business world. The developer of Android OS should always update the apps and software which all available in Google play to cope with the demand by consumer and challenges from competitors.

5.2.5 - Other recommendations

Android OS should conduct some roadshow in the public places like shopping mall, to let more people to understand the features and benefits within Android OS. The roadshow can add some gimmick like, lucky draw when purchases up to a certain amount and giving away the small gift to attract more to join for the event, and this is common business practices which perform by the marketers.

5.3 - Limitations of study

When go through the process of research there are some uncontrollable issue may affect the quality of result. A study that over a certain interval of time, so that lack of time and information is one of the major factors which occur during the study. In case the researchers are using a sample of expediency to the respondents, as contrast to a random sample, then the results of the study may not generally reliable to a certain population. And the scope of study also depends on the location and sizes; the study is conducted in the area of Ipoh and given out to 50 respondents, so that is will cause the factor of limitation of the research.

5.4 - Suggestion for further research

Based on the results of this research of the research, the following suggestion would dedicate for the further research. The research is conduct with the topic that covering the view from consumer be reflected on Android OS and only within the area of Ipoh, for the similar research may conduct in Kuala Lumpur, Georgetown, and Johor Bahru. And the sizes of respondents are able increase to 200 respondents to receive the different viewpoint of consumer from different locations.

5.5 - Conclusions

From the research, the following conclusion were carried out, the information should be approachable and workable upon adequate demand by a consumer. So that the bases online has become increasingly important, such as the attribute of the major competitor of Android OS, which is apple Inc, the consumer, scope of research. The goal of most is to create s strong and defensive position in the market on more bases to the consumer and to do it much better than the competitors. The methodology of this research is conducted by using SWOT analysis, which is strength, weaknesses, opportunity and threats to make the Google Inc to find out the reasons why consumer choose to purchase the smartphones based on Android OS.

The continuous improvements are required for Android OS, the new product lines, and the additions to existing products to solve the problem which occurs in the older version of Android OS like the various bugs in the system itself and to reposition the products and services are needed.

5.6 - Summary

The whole chapter is discussing over the result after the questionnaire surveys and the opinion based on the research stating the conclusion and recommendations. According to the survey, respondents are emphasis on security issue so that the Android OS are providing a common interface and allows the user to share information perfection no matter where the data is stored.
