Im a student of IDCS International Diploma in Computer Studies in MCC branch of Mandalay city. We have to study 4 subjects in this second semester of IDCS. Networking also includes as one subject. Networking involves connecting computers and other electronic devices for the purpose of sharing information and resources and for communication. Nowadays networks are vital to the business use of computers so we have to know the network as an IT student.

The title of this assignment is Frank Craig Brown Inc Company. A major retail company, Frank Craig Brown Inc, employs two classes of sales staff -junior sales staff who work from the office and senior sales staff who work from their homes. To provide appropriate advices to customers, the management has set a budget to equip wireless enabled Notebook PCs for senior sales staff. And the management also wants to convert the existing wired network to Wi-Fi network.

The aim is to produce a feasibility report outlining with the provision of a remote working system in company and comprehensive project plan for Wi-Fi network to implement in office.

About remote working system

Remote working system can be defined as full or part-time constabulary work. The network access can be obtained through the Remote Access Server (RAS). The remote working system has some requirements that other network don't require. The security policy of remote working is to maintain the environment to secure and reduce the risks to the confidentiality, availability and integrity of constabulary information. Sometime, working in control-mode is more secure than working in remote-mote. There are some guidance and policies in remote working such as policy for information security, policy for internet and e-mail security services and advice of portable IT equipment.

The remote working system can be divided into three types:

Remote network access that can mobile using a phone

Remote network access that is used in a fixed location

Out of office constabulary work using IT equipment

Remote network access that can mobile using a phone card

It can move rather than a fixed location. When using this remote network access, the computer is not always connected to the specific network. It is connected when the user is in home or office (main or branch office) with specific network. It also has a wireless connection to the specific network. Portable phones are already a well-established feature for the mobile office and it is apart from cost and performance. It is effective in integration.

If the user want to work and access the information of company, the VPN (Virtual Private Network) that is also a remote working system will be best. The user who is at home can receive the vital information and can work happily and comfortably over the internet. The VPN allows connecting the trusted network (e.g. main office) with other trusted networks (e.g. the staff's home). And it is immensely cheaper than the private lines but the important one is to connect the VPN correctly.

Remote network access that is used in a fixed location

It can be worked in a fixed location and the PCs in that location can run standard office software and can offer internet access. The PC is networked providing with modems, LAN and ISDN connections. The bandwidth is also adequate and any PC that connected to the internet can run the IT applications with no problems. Remote access to corporate systems with ISDN or modem and the business

Centre's LAN needs some temporary configuration to be carried out to dial-up settings and network. When the business centre dials directly, the facilities of the main office can be used to divert calls to workers when the workers are based there.

Out of office constabulary work using IT equipment

It does not need any network access. It can be set up a permanently configured office with a dedicated computer and telephone. The call forwarding and ISDN dial-up for remote IT system access are the most straightforward solution. The IP solution becomes more attractive because of its high bandwidth and this network access offer better performance and lower costs. This network access is for home workers who have laptop computer or a multi-purpose home PC.


Benefits of implementing the remote working system for the company

There will be more space in office for the staff can work at home.

The staffs want to work the company that uses remote access network more than the company which uses traditional network access.

The work will be more perfect as the staff can work happily and with less stress in remote access network and higher productivity can get in company.

Because of remote working system, the staff can provide a better customer service at all time.

The company can stand as a better image for staff with flexibility rather than the other companies.

Remote working system can also reduce the travel time.

A person can reach through the most appropriate mean upon what they are doing and where they are. It is known as "presence" in IP world and it may be the most exciting application by increasing the product.

Any broadband in world is connected and can connect the office by working at home. And that staff can also receive all voice calls, emails, voicemails and faxes.

The remote working system can be used inside or outside of the office by connecting the mobile and Wi-Fi connections and it only require a simple mobile phone. So, the separate personal digital assistants or notebook computers are not required to carry.

To communicate electronically, they can communicate by implementing new ADSL line as a simple way. As another way, they can communicate with Virtual Private Network (VPNs).

The VPNs can be used with Citrix Environment or a Terminal Services, or a SSL based Remote Workspace solution (VPN). The main service of VPN is that can work anywhere. It can access with Broadband, mobile data card, wireless hotspot and so on. And it can provide about 1 to 1000 of users in the senior sales staff's homes that the office offers.

The common wireless encryption standard, the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), is easily broken when configured accurately. So, the major disadvantage is security.

It extends from several feet to several hundred feet. Thus, the quality and speed can fall down tremendously.

It depends on environmental factors such as obstructions and radio frequency interference.

We have to set up a network with 2 wireless nodes and 1 wired node. In this case, setting up a network with 1 wired node is good when the security settings are lost and cannot be getting back on the network.

The first thing is to connect with wireless router

Make sure that modem is turned off.

Join the Ethernet cable from Ethernet port of modem to wireless router's WAN port which is separate from grouped LAN ports.

Plug that Ethernet cable to one LAN ports among four LAN ports on the back of the wireless router and plug the other end of cable to PC. In these processes, the cable is RJ 45 cable.

To know that the modem is connected with service provider, it has to be turned on. Then, wait for the status lights and it may take a few minute.

Plug in the router and the status lights will blink as it goes through its own diagnostics. It may also take a few minute.

Boot up the wired PC.

As the second thing, the router must be configured.

Follow the steps as the router's printed quick-start guide indicates.

Open the web browser and type address) as we use the Linksys Wireless-N Gigabit Router.

When the router's security functions are enabled, we have to choose the options WEP and WPA. After choosing, enter the security key.

Then change the default administrator's password and SSID.

The last thing, a wireless PCI card is installed in a desktop PC.

Follow the steps as the card's quick-start guide. Open the software installation program if need.

Shut down and remove the desktop PC's cover.

Place the PCI slot in the back of the PC's cover and replace the PC's cover.

Open the PC. Open the wireless networking connection's properties. In wireless networking tab, choose the wireless networking name. Click Configure and set the security settings to match with the router.

ADSL line is the way to use internet. ADSL line is a version of DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) where the upload speed is slower than the download speed. ADSL supports speeds up to 8 Mbps in the download direction and up to 1 Mbps in the upload direction, but typical connection speeds are less than 1.5 Mbps for download and less than 1 Mbps for upload. ADSL is ideal for home Internet users because the bulk of traffic in these connections travels in the download direction.


A modem is a device for making an analog connection between computers over a telephone line, effectively making a WAN connection between computers or networks. Because a modem can use existing telephone lines, it remains a popular method to connect remote users to a network or the Internet. A modem converts a digital signal from a computer into an analog signal. Internal or external modems are available on most computers. Modem speed is measured in the number of bits per second (bps) that can be transmitted.

Wireless Router

Wireless Router has the functions of a router and a wireless access point. It is mainly used to connect with internet and computer network without wire. It is used in wired LAN, wireless LAN or mixed or wired/wireless network. Almost all wireless routers have LAN port, a WAN port and wireless antennae. Wireless router can serve in point-to-point mode and point-to-multipoint mode.

RJ 45 wire

RJ45 wire is the one of the communication media. RJ45 is the standard for the plug that you use for connecting cat5 cable to a network. It's an 8 connector plug that looks like a larger version of a phone plug. It functions to permit modular cables to stretch between wall plates.

Wireless network adaptor

The wireless network adaptor mediates communication between a computer and the networking medium. It performs two tasks - establishes and manages the computer's network connection and translates digital computer data into signals for outgoing messages and translates signals into digital computer data for incoming messages.

(iii)Setting up security for the wireless connectivity (WPA)

To run this wireless security setup wizard, click the setup tab and click wireless connection setup wizard.

When the above box is shown, click next.

In step 1, enter the SSID name as PTLSJC. SSID is also case-sensitive.

In this step, we have to choose "better" as we want to set up WPA wireless connectivity.

Then, click next.

In step 3, a password (between 8-63 characters) has to be given.

The above screen will show pre-shared key.

The setup will finish by clicking save.

(iv) Assign the Gateway IP and the range of IP addresses

When the IP address is changed, click Apply key. The new IP address will be needed to enter in your browser and the configuration utility will be shown.

Subnet Mask - Enter the default subnet mask as the Domain name (Optional).

Enable DNS Relay - Uncheck the box will transfer the information of DNS server from computers of ISP.

If the box is checked, the computers will use the router for a DNS server.

Enable DHCP Server - Check this box to enable DHCP server of router.

Uncheck the box not to enable this function.

DHCP IP Address Range - Enter the range (starting and ending) of IP addresses for the DHCP server.

DHCP lease time - Enter the lease time (minutes) and the taking time of IP address will lease.

Always Broadcast - Check this box to ensure the function of compatibility with some DHCP clients.

(v) Change the SSID of the wireless access point

The box (picture 1) will appear when the network setting tab in setup page is clicked.

Click save settings and the box (picture 2) will appear.

In this box, change the SSID name as PTLSJC.

(vi) Router Configuration, wireless networking configuration of the nodes and available wireless screen

To configure the router, open internet explorer and type the address as (IP address of router).

Login box will appear and in username, select admin. And enter a password to login.

The router's web interface will open and click internet tab in setup page.

Then, click the internet connection setup wizard to configure the router.

Click the next button.

In this box, set the password.

Select the time-zone as you like from the drop-down menu. Then, click next.

Choose DHCP connection.

This will need to type MAC address using computer and click clone in used computer's MAC address and click next.

The host name will require some ISPs. The default host name is the router's device name.

To save the settings, click "Connect". The router will reboot and then it will connect by taking 1-2 minutes.

Picture 1 is to configure the wireless networking. Type the IP address and subnet mask of router.

Picture 2 is configuring the DHCP server setting and assigns the range of DHCP IP address.

Right-click the computer-sign on taskbar to appear the above box. Then, click "Connect to a network".

Select the network we set up namely PTLSJC and click "Connect".

Enter the security key as we assign in router installation for the network "PTLSJC".

Then, it will connect to PTLSJC network.

The box will shown as above that the PTLSJC network can be connected successfully.

(vii) Sharing a folder and copy that folder from machine1 to machine2 via wireless network

Set up the local network named IDCS-29 and connect that network in machine1 and machine2.In these processes, machine1's name is Fujitsu-PC and machine2's name is Yoshida.

In machine1 (Fujitsu-PC),

Share a folder named 'New Folder' in Fujitsu-PC.

In machine2 (Yoshida PC),

Open 'network' in machine2 (Yoshida PC).

Then click the Fujitsu-PC and will see the shared folder of machine1.

At last, copy the shard folder (New folder) into C:.
