The whole school have a total of eight computers (each computer has only 20GB capacity, 256MB RAM, a single kernel, the operating system is windows ME), a printer, two projectors, a router and two hub. Including two computers for staff use, mainly used for storing information, such as examination papers and student attendance records. The remaining six computers were placed in the computer room for students. All teaching materials are printed at the same printer.

As the computers and the printer model are too old which have produced many problems, such as the hard disk have not enough space, RAM is not capable for internet uses thus lead to slow network connection speed. The school has insufficient computers provided for student which may affect the opportunities for students to use computers. The printer's printing efficiency is too slow thus more time is needed to print the teaching materials and notices. For the problem of network security, the current router and firewall cannot withstand present crackers' intrusion or virus infection. Thanks to the use of hub, if more than one users transfer data within the network at the same time, this will produce the collision, resulting failed delivery of data.

To enable the school can teach better or more advance level of computer courses better quality of teaching, making school staffs and students to have deepen understanding of the use of information technology, effective data processing and saving, reducing saving time and human resources involved in some recurring activities including production of teaching materials and notices through automatic computer processing system, contacting external parties conveniently and effectively through the systematic data transfer, but also to facilitate the transmission and retrieval of information for staff and students outside the school, enhancing security features making cracker cannot destroy, invasion and virus not easy to infect, the school has to create a new network through the merger of the old and new ones to improve the current situation, which is more easy for users to adapt without using any big-bang improvement approach, thus the problem can be alleviated.

1.3 Requirements:

New network will be the combination of new devices (eight desktop computers, two interactive whiteboards, a networked laser printer, a router and a switch.) and the old devices (eight computers, a printer, two projectors, a ROUTER and a HUB), the new devices will use new system, including FIREWALL, windows server 2008, windows 7, SQL 2008 and so on, old devices' components will remain unchanged. New systems and old systems are very different mode of operation, so need a time to train school staff to use and manage the new system. Some time is needed to assembling and merging old and new systems after purchasing new device. More IP addresses are needed to purchase for many computers going online. The past plan make by ISP is based on the limitations of the old system which is not suitable for the new network, so changing to a faster internet plan is essential. The old network lacks software management, thus add two windows server being one of them as a domain controller, so that making a more systemic network and more convenient management.

2. Assumptions:

The village school name is ST. ANDRO Primary School, with only one level, a total of eight classrooms, a computer room and a staff room, and a playground. School has a total of one hundred and thirty five people, a total of primary one to six, each class has only twenty students. Principals, teachers, assistants consist of fifteen people, which accounted for two computer teachers, one assistant, students accounted for one hundred and twenty people.

A total of six computers are placed in computer room, the other two computers are placed in the staff room for teachers to use. In the computer course, four students share a computer. Two computers inside the staff room are mainly used in keeping records of student attendance at classes and marks for tests, exams and assignments. The computer room will be available for students after school for accessing the Internet for research purposes, and for searching or accessing learning materials and preparing written assignments.

Computer courses are major in teaching Microsoft Office, and how to use of basic knowledge of the Internet.

Government is planned to provide a funding of total $150,000 to improve the school network environment. When the proposed network completed, will be set up a computer professional courses (Microsoft Certified IT Professional)at night, the object irrespective of age, two lesson per week, two hours per lesson, $ 80 per hour.

When the proposed network are finished,as mentioned in the above parts, technicians who have been given enough training is needed to take in charge of the following operations and daily activities:

They have to keep an eye on the server and database and making backup for them in the purpose of ensuring information would not be lost due to any possible hardware and software damages or errors, e.g. unexpected electric shock and software breakdown.

Regularly making comprehensive maintenance to many parts of the computer hardware, like cleaning every PCs every week, providing checking and updating inside software, thus the life time of all equipment can be pro-longed.

Regularly checking for software update and upgrade options, thus software's versions and functions can be ensured are up-to-date and available for current and future uses, and most importantly, ensure the system can be well-protected.

4. Technical, Operational and Economic Factor

In order to have a more comprehensive explanation of the technical, operational and economical factors that have been taken into considerations for the decision making of the proposed solution of network, this part will be divided according equipment,

4.1 Equipment

In order to use more functions, providing stability of the operating system, such as the WINDOWS SERVER 2008, SQL 2008, Windows 7, HARDWARE is needed to have a better performance (as task 3 mentioned) to smoothly to run operating systems, thus the relative price for the proposed hardware equipments will be more expensive . In addition, the selected device in the current stage have higher performance can ensure that in the next 5-10 years, they will still effectively support the new operating system and software, and as they also have some hardware maintenance period, so we do not need to worry about the hardware is damaged or soon become obsolete, which can meet cost-benefit needs.

4.2 Router/Switch:

The village school may be expanded its own network within a few years. Using CISCO router have many advantages, for example, its unique configuration of system can be used to enhance SECURITY, such as router:"access-list", switch: "v lan". In addition, router can be set to do DHCP SERVER which IP can assigned on other computer, meanwhile, all of them is provided with a six years maintenance warranty period (in this project), although the price is more expensive, the pro-longed life time economic benefit together with its comprehensive functions would out-weight it relative higher in cost in terms of economic factors.

4.3 Operating System:

OS is a management computer hardware and computer software resources of programs, but also the core and foundation of the computer system. OS has a lot of options, such as MICROSOFT WINDOWS, LINUX, CHROM OS and so on. However, these systems only MICROSOFT WINDOWS suitable for school, because LINUX although cheap, and more stable efficiency, but operation is difficult. CHROM OS is for large enterprises to use and the price very high. But MICROSOFT WINDOWS has a simple interface, easy operation, the price is also more affordable.

Desktop computers are mainly using MICROSOFT WINDOWS because they are the most common operating system and easy to operate, thus they are the school's first choice. I recommend using WINDOWS 7. Why using WINDOWS 7 but not WINDOWS XP is because WINDOWS 7 have more functions and more powerful than WINDOWS XP, such as the design of backup and restore is very well, for Windows XP its restore system function basically is not useful with only a few people using due to its lack of ability, but backup and restore functions in Windows 7 are not only providing protection to the system, sometimes it has particular notices to remind a user that they can use recovery data. Most important of all, the difference of price of the two operating systems is small, which Windows 7 is slightly more expensive than Windows XP. Although WINDOWS 7 has more features and functions than WINDOWS XP, its operation is very simple to use, including loading, storage, etc. to load fast, will also increase job productivity.

Desktop server will be installed with WINDOWS SERVER 2008,because WINDOWS SERVER 2003 will be suspended for SUPPORT. In addition, the following is WINDOWS SERVER 2008 and WINKDOWS SERVER 2003 Comparison of:

From the above chart can be confirmed that WINDOWS SERVER 2008 have a better performance than WINDOWS SERVER 2003, but not much difference between their prices.

4.4 Database :

Database is a management information system。database software have ORCALE, SQL SERVER and MySQL can choice. However, SQL SERVER and ORCALE is for large enterprises to use, and the price very high, the operation more difficult. I recommend using MySQL as high-performance, low cost, reliability, easy operation, and the most popular open source database. It is widely used on Internet, small and medium website. Such as Wikipedia, Google and Facebook.

Other benefit :

The operation system of the newly built network is very simple to use, including loading, storage, etc. fast data processing will also increase productivity and efficiency

Introducing new computers and operating system can encourage and motivating the learning interest of students.

Updating and up-to-date equipment can be served as a attraction or gimmick to encourage students of both inside and outside the school interest towards computer studies.

6. Risk Assessment

Risk 1: Unauthorized user

To defend the whole network, including the whole school computerized equipment and computers from the access of users who have no accessing permission, and may take information and even change and cause damage to the system, precaution is needed.

Solution : Cisco 2811 will be config at "Access-List" in order to avoid comparing an IP X condition with TCP/IP data, different types of Access List are used. This can prevent users of non-school student or non-certification to conduct the illegal invasion network theft or destroy.

Risk 2: Software failure

For example, software can have problems of break down.

Solution: The two servers are all configure the clustering services, even if the software failure caused a sudden loss of one of sever data, another server will immediately take up the job does not make data loss. In addition, the daily also carried backup, even if the software failure,, also can restore backup, do not cause data lost.

Risk 3: Hardware failure

Possible damages to the hardware, like depreciation.

Solution: If the hard disk suddenly fails, immediate withdrawal factory repair, free of charge during the warranty period

RISK4: Computer virus infection

There are several ways to computer virus infection, such as browsing web pages from unknown sources, the students brought back from the device infection. The view that in the proxy will block that unsafe site, If visit unsafe web browsing, it will not display. Also in all anti-virus software installed on your computer, reduce the chance of poisoning the computer

Task 2

Using the technique of network analysis, construct an activity diagram showing the main activities to be undertaken in the project. Choose a suitable project process model e.g. waterfall model, to show the key stages of your project, and provide a written explanation of what will happen within each key stage. Show what activities are dependent and what activities may run in parallel. In particular, include staff training within your plan.

Note: You do not need to produce plans for lower level activities e.g. task breakdowns.

Waterfall model is selected for this section.

Stage 1: Feasibility Study

Define: The end product of this part would be a feasibility report, including the activities and costs to generate the options are well-known and relatively easy to estimate, and the timescale is short (compared to developing the complete solution).

In this stage of the feasibility report, there should be at least two possible options for the school to take in consideration and make the final decision. In order to provide comparison for decision making, each option has its own item costs, their own ability assessment, etc. But there would be recommended options according to the comprehensive comparison between the two options of the school in order to solve the problems faced in the current situation. In the recommendation, analyses like cost-benefit analysis of the foreseeable future years and how to recover the spending under these options, and how their working schedule is planned for the use of referencing. Moreover, the possible risks that the options may have to encounter together with the respective solutions will be also included, in the purpose of letting the school to know any possible risk and their solutions, which may reduced the future risks.

Stage 2: Requirements Definition

Define : A detailed analysis of the existing equivalent system, manual or automated, is essential to ensure that the list of requirements is complete. The current system fulfils a current business need that must still be met by the new system.

In this report, the requirements of the new system suggestions in many aspects such as their software and hardware, operating system, training that is needed to be given to staff taking charge for holding system and network, etc, is stated in this report, together with the problems that may happened on the system after the project is finished and their respective solutions on each problem.

Stage 3: System Specification

The objective of the system specification stage is to define the system that will fully meet the user requirements.

The software, hardware and operating systems that I have suggested is all tailor-make for the uses of teachers and students, since teachers need computer mainly used for keeping records of student attendance at classes and marks for tests, exams and assignments. For accessing the Internet for teaching materials that can be used on the interactive whiteboards. And students have to use computers mainly for accessing the Internet for research purposes, and for learning materials and prepare written assignments and print them out.

Relatively well-preformed computer is chosen because they have more capability for the future development of the school.

Stage 4: System Design

Inside the network, the school database should consist of both the data of students and teachers, students data like their personal information, their classes allocation, marks records, etc, teachers data like their personal information, major, etc, and data between two parties can have interaction and cross linkage, like class allocation storing data of its students and teacher involved. Network can also store learning materials like powerpoint notes for students to access and download inside and outside the school once they can login online to the online school website's system.

Stage 5: Program Design and Development

A good design can run the new system without any programmer assistance is important. When designing the network, taking into consideration the school staff did not ICT skills, so designed to be simple and easy to operate, so that trained staff can familiarize with it. I may be carried out taking into account the long-term development of the school, so these devices to the network selected for use.

Stage 6: System Test

All data designed will be practice test, In this project, I conducted a final test :

network test: test the network connection, such as ping each computer's IP address. Domain Controller can control other computers, such as changing the Policy, user profile and so on. I use invasion with the basic technology, try the school network from outside intrusion, whether easier. Transmission between computers and computer is success or not.

user test: school staff without the assistance of other people, be able to use the new system.

network administrator test: without the help of other people to manage the new system all operations, such as the updating, maintenance, increase, debug and so on.

The above is not the problem, will by system test in this project.

Stage 7: Implementation

Into the practical application stage, although through the system test, but still can not ensure that the system does not appear error, need to run for a period of time to test it and the surrounding manual procedures. both old and new systems are run in parallel for a certain period and their results are compared to ensure total compatibility and accuracy of the new system.

Recommendation option:

Students and teacher are recommended for using option 1, it is because they are only have to use computer for documentary purposes, using software like Microsoft office and internet explorer for online searching, computer's performance will not cause much effect on them.

But for server, database and SQL, option 2 is more preferred as they need higher performance and higher processing speed equipped computer.
