I am a student of KMD Computer Training Centre, attending in International Diploma in Computer Studies (IADCS) under NCC Education Program. IADCS is a one-year program of full time study, consisting of two modules. Each module contains four subjects. In this Enterprise Networking Assignment, we have five tasks to make for Townsville Police Department's restructure. This assignment was to use some of the important features of Enterprise networking subject and advanced features.

This assignment will allow students to demonstrate and understanding of the network requirements for a new police headquarters including a computer network, telephone system and two-way voice communications with patrolling officers.

The Scenario

The police Department in Townsville has been restructured and is shortly opening a new headquarters building. The headquarters will house all the communications and computer systems for the police department.

Townsville Police Department covers an area of 100 square kilometers and has a Chief Constable who is responsible for the policing of that area. The Chief Constable is assisted by an Assistant Chief Constable who also carries out senior duties and takes responsibility for the whole Police Department when the Chief Constable is ill, on holiday, or away from the area.

Townsville is divided into four districts(Northern, Eastern, Western and Southern). Policing in each district is the responsibility of a district commander who is assisted by a Deputy District Commander. Each district has three sergeants and twenty four constables allocated to it. When serious incidents occur in Townsville, police officers may be temporarily allocated to another district. Each district has five police cars for patrolling the area and responding to incidents. Police officers also patrol the local area on foot. Each district has its own large office within the headquarters building and requires a workstation for each District commander and for each Deputy District Commander. The sergeants in each district will have one workstation between them and there will be five workstations for each member of staff.

Townsville Police Department also has a Serious Crimes Squad headed by a Detective Chief Inspector who is assisted by a Detective Inspector. This squad also has twenty detectives who are used to investigate serious crimes such as murder. This squad has eight cars and has an office within the headquarters building. It requires a workstation for each member of staff.

The Police Department also has twenty civilian staff, responsible for general administration work including operating the telephone system and general administration duties. The civilians are in a separate office from the police staff and their office includes the headquarters reception area.

Townsville police department is renewing all of its networks for the new headquarters including the computer network, telephone communications and two-way communications with police officers who are on patrol.

Assignment Tasks

Task 1

Investigate the possible network topologies and media that could be used to create the in-house network (LAN) for the police department.

  1. Explain how the topologies operate.
  2. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of each medium.
  3. Provide a recommendation for which topology and medium to use including reasons for this recommendation.

Task 2

Investigate the Internet connection requirements for the Police Department.

  1. Describe the Internet services that may be required.
  2. Explain the connection speeds that are suitable for these requirements.
  3. Find examples of Internet Service Provider (ISPs) that can meet these requirements in your country.
  4. Make a recommendation to use one ISP based upon the services offered and price charged.

Task 3

Investigate the methods the police department could implement for two-way voice communications. As a minimum include the following information:

  1. How each method works (frequencies, full/half duplex, etc)?
  2. Details of the legal requirements for operating the system in your country (e.g. allocation of frequencies, licensing requirements, etc).
  3. Costs of setting up and operating the system, including licensing costs, equipment costs, etc.
  4. Limitations of each method (interference, range, etc).
  5. Provide a recommendation for how voice communications should be set up and run including reasons for this recommendation.

Task 4

Investigate telephone systems available in your country for single-site organisations like the police department. Pay particular attention to:

  1. The main equipment that would be installed.
  2. The features available with each system.
  3. The cost of equipment and installation.
  4. The cost of operating the system.
  5. Provide a recommendation for which system to purchase including reasons for this recommendation.

Task 5

Create a comprehensive, professional report describing your network recommendations. This should include the detail of Task 1-4, have estimates of cost throughout and have an executive summary at the start giving the key points.

Task 1

Network Topology

A network topology describes the arrangement of computer network. It defines how the workstation, or nodes, within the network are arranged and connected to each other. It is the physical interconnections of the links or nodes of a computer network.

It has five ordinary topologies. There will be reliable for the in-house network (LAN). There are:

  • Bus topology
  • Star topology
  • Ring topology
  • Tree topology
  • Mesh topology

There are also three main categories of topologies:

  • physical topologies
  • signal topologies
  • logical topologies

The signal topologies and the logical topologies are often used interchangeable. The physical topology of network is the actual geometric arrangement of workstations. It is the design of wiring, cables, the locations of nodes, and the interconnections between the nodes and the cabling or wiring system.

Bus Topology

In the bus topology, each node is connected to a central bus that runs along the whole network. Each node is directly connected to the rest of the node in the network. All information transmitted across the bus, so can be received by any nodes in the network.

Star Topology

In the star topology, one central node or server workstation to which each of the other nodes on a network are directly connected. All information transmitted across the central nodes.

Ring Topology

In the ring topology, each node is directly connected to other two nodes on a network and other pair of nodes is indirectly also connected. It can be imaged as a circular arrangement. The data are passing through one or more intermediate nodes.

Tree Topology

In the tree topology, one node of star topology network is directly connected to node of another network. The tree topology is also combination of the bus topology and the star topology. Unlike the star topology in the tree, some nodes may indirectly connect to the central node.

Mesh Topology

The mesh topology has two designs called full mesh and partial mesh. In the full mesh topology, each node directly connected to rest nodes in a network. In the partial mesh, some nodes directly connected to rest nodes in a network and some nodes directly connected to some nodes in a network.

Network Media

Physical network medium is the type of cabling, that is used in a network. There are many types of cables used in networks today. Copper wire, Radio transmission lines and fibre optic cable are three main mediums of computer network communication.

Wireless LAN has two types of architecture; there are Ad-Hoc Network and Infra Mode Network. Ad-Hoc Network is used in network which has a few nodes and there must be closely located. It architecture require only one wireless NIC for each nodes.

Infra Mode Network is also called infrastructure mode. That network architecture is used in large wireless LAN. It may include at last one wireless router and many nodes. Wireless connection has many advantages; it used a smaller amount of space, no cabling needed between nodes, easy to expend, nodes can be mobile and not fix in one location on a network, wide bandwidth and multichannel transmissions. The length of wireless connectivity area is larger than wire connection.

Wireless LAN devices are expensive. And so many kind of interrupt wave may disrupt to wireless connection than other media networks when the data transmission. It's easy to accept and big weakness point is less security. But it can be backup way to connect with a few devices when fail the main connection.

Fibre optic cable is popular for high speed network. It can support many channels at tremendous speed. But it is very expensive and almost never used in LAN.

Copper wire involves many type of wire. But twisted pair and coaxial cable are popular. Coaxial cable, also know as coax is designed with two conductors; thick coax and thin coax. Thick coax is stiff and heavy cable that is used as a network backbone for the bus network. Thick coax is difficult to work with and it is quit expensive.

Thin coax is common type of Coaxial. Thin coax is quite flexible and has low impedance. It is capable of faster transmission than twisted-pair cable. It is supporting several networks on the same cable. But it supports only a single channel. It is high attenuation rate makes it expensive when long distance. Now a day these two coax cables are not useful, because of these tow coax cables are more reliable with Bus topology.

The common and standard type of network media is twisted pair cable. It consists of two insulated wires twisted around each other and may include one pair to 4200 pair in a cable. In unshielded twisted pair (UTP), each wire is insulated with plastic wrap, but the pair is encased in an outer covering. Category 5 UTP cable is standard type of most Networks. Category 5 cable includes 4 pair and jack is RJ-45.

Every electronic device has little or more weakness. So, twisted pair has little weakness points; exist a little crosstalk, susceptibility to interference and noise, attenuation problem is repeaters, routers needed every 2km or 3km, relatively low bandwidth (3000Hz), capable of slower transmission than coaxial, require direct peer to peer connections. (p2p connection require cross cable of UTP)

But it has so many advantages. It is a thin, flexible and light weight cable that is easy to string between walls. Easy to work with and install. It does not quickly fill up wiring ducts, costs less per meter/foot than any other type of LAN cable. It is inexpensive but readily available. Maximum data rate is 1000Mbps in 1000BaseTX cable. If cable length is 100m (328 ft), we will get high transmission rate and high security in a network.

Recommendation for Topology and Media

The topology of highly recommend for the Townsville police department is the Star topology. The topology offers simplicity of operation. It also achieves an isolation of each device in the network. Many benefits will get using the star topology.

Easy to replace, install or remove nodes or other devices. Each device needs only one link and one ports to connect it to any number of nodes; one device per connection.

The star topology is no difficulty to make configurations, ease of service. It has a number of concentration points. These provide easy access for service or reconfiguration of the network. Good performance and reliable. Robust as failure of one link does not affect the whole system. The remaining of system will be active.

It has simple access protocols. Any given connection in a star network involves only the central node. Thus in a star network, access protocols are very simple.

Recommend for network media is Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cable. Because of it is common standard of computer networking and reliable to install. It is really cheap and really easy to work with. So highly recommend network media for large and secure network is UTP cable.

Task 2

Internet Service

Some internet services are required in the network such as email, chat, video conferencing and data collecting from the internet, etc. Communication will fast with low charge and less step using in email, chat and video conferencing.

Discussion can make in video conferencing without traveling. Serious Crimes Squad has twenty workstations to make investigation. Internet services can provide their investigation. Townsville police department will has much amounts of benefit by connecting to the world with these internet services.

Connection Speed

There are many type of connection speed; 128 Maximum Information Rate, 256 maximum Information Rate and 512 Maximum Information Rate with different customer plans.

512MIR of connection speed is suitable for the police department's network. Because of Police Department have many workstations to communicate in the office. And some internet services need high speed. That speed will reliable with star topology and UTP cables.

Internet Service Provider

The Ministry of Post and Telecommunication (MPT), Myanmar Teleport and Bagan Cyber Tech, they are the only internet service providers in our country. These ISPs can provide above required speed and allow 10,000MB of data limit.

Recommendation for ISP

The recommendation of ISP is Myanmar teleport. It has many Internet connection services such as broadband, ADSL, Dialup, Wi-Fi etc. Services cost information is below.

Corporate plan is 512 Maximum Information Rates connection. That plan allows to 12 PC and 2 VoIP. Data limit is 10,000 MB and 25 free e-mail accounts. Activation fee is US$ 840 and Monthly fee is US$ 130.

Task 3

Two-way Voice Communications Methods

Tow way voice communication network is a one kind of radio communication for mobile networking. It has many benefits for police department. They are:

  • Constables are easier to stay in connectivity area
  • Constables can access to timely and accurate information is available while away from office or their responsibility area
  • Constables can do connecting and patrolling at the same time
  • \

Voice communication network used radio frequencies.

Half DuplexThe good example of half duplex is walkie-talkie. It is not simultaneously; means both directions include but can use only direction at one time. Because of the frequency of both directions are same.

Full DuplexFull duplex are also know as double duplex communication. The single can transmit on both directions at the same time. Full duplex is simultaneously. Send out signal frequency and received signal frequency, these are different in communication. The simple example for full duplex is mobile phone.

Time Division Duplex Time division duplex (TDD) emulates full duplex communication over a half duplex communication connection. Example is W-CDMA.

Frequency Division Duplex In frequency division duplex (FDD) send out and received signal, that communicating with different frequencies. So it can make both of send and receive signal at the same time. FDD method can be able in case of the symmetric traffic. Example is IEEE 802.16 WiMax.

Recommendation for Two-way Voice Communication

Task 4

Report on Townsville Police Department Restructuring

On October 2009 you asked me to investigate the better use of computer network, telephone communications and two way voice communications for Townsville Police Department Restructuring Program. I carried out an investigation for planning the implementing and maintenance of the new network. Here I will make presentation the information of my investigation.

Townsville Police Department has four sub police department for four districts. Each department has a Deputy District Commander, a District Commander, three sergeants and 24 constables. Each of Deputy District Commander and District Commander require one workstation. And then one workstation is required for three sergeants of each sub department. Every department also requires five workstations for use by the constables.

So each department will have eight workstations. These workstations connect to the central switching hub. Each workstation has one link to central switching of the department. So that, if one connection fail in the network, there is no effect to other connection in the same network. In this situation, departments' networks will fail when the central switching hub has been break down or stop working.

The star topology is easy to maintenance in a department. If a workstation has problem, that is simple to disconnect quickly from the network. After repair the workstation then it is simple to reconnect to the network. It is also easy to search workstations which have problem in communication on the network.

Star topology can expend easily. If require adding a new workstation in a department, that is only required one workstation including network adapter and one cable to connect to the central switching hub. Some switching hub allows twenty four ports to add workstations. According to the theory, star topology allows 1024 workstations to add for each network.

Cabling types may be mixed by switching device. Example, some of workstations connect with UTP cables to central switching hub and some of workstations connect with coax cables to the same central switching hub. This situation may be work when the switching hub includes both type of jack (coax and UTP).

Star topology is allowed to cover a much larger physical area. But workstation need long distance cables. Because of each workstation is directly connected to the central switching hub but that is not big a problem due to the UTP cable is least expensive. And then all workstations of the department are only depended on the central node, which is the switching hub. So that, every workstation and central node should used wireless network adapter to connect when the main connection disconnect. This backup way idea provides to large cost, but it will very helpful when the emergency case.

Now a day, some Large LAN use combination of topologies; star-bus or star-tree, etc. Townsville Police Department should use like that. Each department including Serious Crimes Squad use star topology and all department of central switching hub should be connected to the main central node, which is also switching hub, of the whole building. It is flexible and reliable to maintenance. There is no low down performance.

If the length of workstation and central switching hub are long distance way than maximum length of the UTP cable, we should place the router at the intermediate. Network devices such as routers, switching hub with RJ45 jack are inexpensive and easy to get and buy, that is better than other network interface devices. It is a big reason for choosing of the UTP cable.

Costs less per meter than any other type of LAN cable

The rate of frequency is 100MHz in CAT 5e standard UTP cable. Data transfer rate is 1000mbit. TIA/EIA, IEEE and much equipment are manufacturer for UTP CAT 5e standard. That cable can work very well in Ethernet LAN.

UTP cable is also used in CCTV camera for security and allows to connecting easily with the computer. UTP cables are reliable in office's decoration. It is small and flexible, so it provides to hide in the walls or floors. Therefore we highly recommend to using the Unshielded Twisted Pair Enhanced Category 5 Cable in Star topology.

Installation and maintenance the network are responsibility by our Kywe Family Company. We have a free training plan for all members of Police Department after installation the network, which may be how to use and how to make without mistakes or errors on the network and the training duration is five hours three time on three days.

After installation during three months, maintenances costs and replacing devices costs are free for not user false. And during the next one year, maintenances costs are free these are facilities for our customers. We have twenty four hours call centre to help.

Choosing of ISP is so clear in our country. Myanmar teleport is the best and it has many access services. In ADSL connection includes five plans of user type; Data only consumer, consumer, enterprise, corporate and VPN.

All type of user plans has Activation fee and Monthly fee. All activation fees are same but monthly fees and facilities are different, e.g. numbers of free email accounts. Corporate plan is suitable for Townsville Police Department. Detail service charges information of Internet connection is below and that are copy from Myanmar Teleport website. Here, the rate of FEC and US$ are same.
