Typical Roles Held Within The Fisher Organisation Commerce Essay

Published:

This essay has been submitted by a student. This is not an example of the work written by our professional essay writers.

A Book-keeper is a vital member of any organisation as the recording of financial data is required by law for every single business regardless of size.

The role of a Book-keeper can be extremely diverse. It can range from basic data entry as either an accounts receivable or accounts payable clerk to the completion of the full range of financial records.

Typically a Book-keeper will be responsible for managing sales, purchase and nominal ledgers and maintaining the cashbook.

The key tasks of a Book-keeper are allocating payments to the sales ledger, producing sales invoices, chasing overdue payments, inputting purchase invoices to the purchase ledger, raising supplier payments, reconciling nominal accounts, bank accounts and the cashbook. These are just a small sample of the variety of tasks associated with the role of a Book-keeper.

A competent and experienced Book-keeper could be required to complete financial statements such as trial balances, profit and loss accounts and balance sheets.

Chartered Accountant

A Chartered Accountant works in various areas of business including public-practice firms, industry and commerce and the not for profit and public sectors. Their role can cover many aspects of finance work.

The key tasks of a Chartered Accountant are preparing financial management reports including financial planning and forecasting, preparing financial statements including monthly and annual accounts, advising on tax and treasury issues, advising clients on business transactions such as mergers and acquisitions, forensic accounting, advising clients who are in financial difficulty to help them turn the business around or to handle the disposal of the business, calculating tax liabilities for clients and liaising with the Inland Revenue on their behalf. These are just a selection of tasks associated with the role of a Chartered Accountant.

Forensic Accountant

A Forensic Accountant investigates crimes related to finance; these include but are not limited to embezzlement, securities fraud, money laundering and bankruptcies. More often than not a Forensic Accountant will be a Chartered Accountant who specialises in the field of Forensic Accountancy.

The key tasks of a Forensic Accountant are examining and analysing evidence from different internal and external information sources, piecing together information and reporting relevant finds, analysing paper and electronic documents, preparing expert reports for court proceedings, giving evidence in court as an expert witness and providing litigation support and assistance in worldwide legal arbitrations.

Forensic accounting jobs are becoming increasingly more popular and an ever growing number of top accountancy firms now have a dedicated forensics department.

Required attributes to become a Chartered Accountant

The attributes required for the role of a Chartered Accountant alongside the academic requirements are the ability to communicate well both verbally and in written form, to be self-motivated, analytical, good with numbers, able to manage others effectively and a good team player. You will also need to have strong commercial awareness and be up to date with current affairs.

There are a number of training routes available to become a Chartered Accountant the main two being ICAEW (ACA) and ACCA. Entry requirements to ACA are high; you will be expected to hold at least two A2 levels and three GCSE passes including Maths and English at grade A or B and 220 UCAS points covering both AS and A2 level.

If choosing to attend university first most employers will require a 2:1 or First and a minimum of 280/300 UCAS tariff score.

The ACA syllabus covers financial management, financial accounting, financial reporting, audit and assurance, taxation, business strategy, management information, accounting, law assurances principals of taxations and business and finance. Study and examinations can be extremely demanding and require candidates to be especially focused in order to succeed.

You will be required to study for at least three years to gain a recognised qualification and hold a full time job at the same time.

The ACCA qualification offers more flexibility at entry level and a longer period in which to qualify (up to 10 years). Graduates from accredited institutions may be eligible to claim exemption from all parts of the ACCA foundation stage. These are just a number of reasons why many organisations prefer to offer this qualification.

Suitability for chosen role

I would be a suitable candidate for the role of Chartered Accountant due to having experience and broad knowledge of book-keeping, finance and office administration. This experience and knowledge would enable me to enter the workplace as a trainee Chartered Accountant and provide me with a suitable grounding to begin my studies at this higher level.

I have already proved my ability to study and achieve well through my previous successes and my degree qualification will give me the background knowledge of business and the confidence to succeed.

I have good organisational, planning and analytical skills, attributes that would serve me well in my chosen career path. I am both flexible and adaptable yet 100% committed to the task in hand. I am also proficient in a variety of MS office applications.

I am a confident and frequent user of the Internet where I like to keep up to date with current affairs.

My ability to work equally well on my own initiative or as part of a team will be beneficial to my success as these are two qualities any individual in the field of accountancy should possess.

My passion for learning and the field of Forensic Accountancy will be my driving force, enabling me to reach any goals that I set myself.

Whilst working as a Chartered Accountant in a company of my choice I would be able to gain the required experience needed to specialise in my chosen field of Forensic Accountancy.

Dear Sir/Madam

I am currently studying for a Foundation Degree in Business with Finance at West Herts College. Part of my studies involves a Work Based Learning Project and with this in mind I am writing to you to express my interest in your company. The project will involve looking into a business problem you may have to which I can find a solution.

With a new found passion for learning I returned to study as a mature student just under three years ago. I decided to study Book-keeping as this was a subject that especially interested me. I had always had good organisational, planning and analytical skills, all of which, proved to be beneficial in my success.

After completion of my studies I held a part time position as a Book-keeper. I covered the full range of financial records for a variety of clients including Sole Traders, Partnerships, Limited Companies and Charities. I liaised with clients at their business premises and at the ABUK office. I assisted clients with enquiries by telephone, written correspondence and face-to-face meetings with them, their representatives and outside agencies. I also communicated with HMRC and Companies House. I am conversant with Sage and KashFlow accounting software and Excel spreadsheets.

I am equally capable of working on my own initiative or as part of a team and am therefore, keen to understand what project I may be able to help you with as part of my Work Based Learning Project which lasts from October 2010 to April 2011.

I shall contact you in a week’s time to discuss this opportunity further. Please find enclosed a copy of my CV.

Yours sincerely

Julie Scott
