Leadership is a term that plays always a top role in management and in a organisation. Before starting the real discussion lets us see how some of the great leaders defines the term "leadership".

When we think about leadership, a range of thoughts cross our mind: The leader as a 'hero' or a 'great man' who accomplishes a major goal against all odds for his/her followers or a leader as a rare and 'charismatic' individual with extra-ordinary qualities and a grand vision. In fact, according to some scholars, the history of the world is the history of great men. The great-man theory of leadership continues to be of popular interest to showcase individual leadership in the political and corporate world.

Personal leadership involves living in balance, living according to your personal values, accepting responsibility for their lives, living with a deep sense of purpose and striving towards a personal vision. Personal leadership is the foundation of all other leadership contexts, the bottom line is, if you're unable to lead yourself effectively, you'll be unable to lead others effectively

1. Leader is a man who can persuade to do what they don't want to do, or do what they are too lazy to do.

2. Leadership is the art to of influencing and directing people in such a way that will win their obedience, confidence, respect and loyal cooperation in achieving common objectives.

3. Leadership occurs when one person induces others to work toward some predetermined objectives.

4. A manager takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don't necessarily want to go but ought to.



A leader must have an understanding about his honesty, confidence and what he can do successfully in proper manner. A leader must have good understanding about their followers. He must be trustworthy, legal and confident about their work.


All people have different nature and they need different type of leadership. A good leader must have known the nature, needs, emotions, motivation of their employees.


What and how you communicate either builds or harms the relationship between you and your employees. A leader must have good communication.


All situations are different. What you do in one situation will not always work in another. You must have perfection in your own decision that decision not too early, not hard, and not weak, if decision is not right it affects whole work.


1. HONEST: A leader must be honest for their work.

2. GOOD DECISION MAKER: As I think, a leader must be a good decision maker. He has the ability of taking decision in hard or in difficult situation.

3. CONFIDENT: He must be confident about their work, if leader has good confidence, then he can do work more efficiently.

4. POLITENESS: A good leader always speaks polite with their employees in any situation.

5. READY TO HELP: He has the quality of co-operation. He must be ready to help others. A good leader always desires to serve others through their leadership.

6. Tolerance to Ambiguity

7. COURAGE: He must have the courage to take the initial steps.

Leadership styles

There are three types of styles in leadership which are as follows:

1. Autocratic

2. Democratic

3. Free Reign

1.Autocratic Leadership Style: In this type of leadership work is done by the employees without taking the advice of their followers It is one in which the manager retains as much power and decision-making authority as possible. The manager does not consult employees, nor are they allowed to give any input. Employees are expected to obey orders without receiving any explanations. The motivation environment is produced by creating a structured set of rewards and punishments. This is often considered the classical approach

2.Bureaucratic Leadership Style: In this type of leadership including one or more employees in the decision making process Bureaucratic leadership occurs where the manager manages "by the book¨. Everything must be done according to procedure or a policy. If it isn't covered by the book, the manager refers to the next level above him or her. This manager is really more than a police officer than a leader. He or she enforces the rules.

3.Laissez-Faire Leadership Style: In this type of leadership, allows the employees to make the decisions, but the leader is still responsible for the decisions that are made. It is used when employees are able to know the situation and determine what needs to be done and how to do it. It is one in which the manager provides little or no direction and gives employees as much freedom as possible. All authority or power is given to the employees and they must determine goals, make decisions, and resolve problems on their own.


Wise: Leaders have to go for critical calls are difficult points. A leader has to be wise and knowledgeable in order to make a correct call for a successful organization. They are strategic, wise and perceptive.

Great communicators: They are comfortable in public speaking and inspiring. They are great orator and persuaders.

Loyalty: The leader must be loyal to every of its follower and understand everyone means he/ she has to treat everyone same.

Disciplined: Most good leaders are very controlled in their goals. Where most would be simply distracted, good leaders discipline their minds to keep focused and steady regardless of the situation.

Vision: Leaders must have a good and clear vision. They must believe in them self and can motivate people in believing and following them. There vision for things is what it could be not what they are.

Passionate: Good leaders are very passionate a\about their work and people. There obsession makes them entirely focused on what they do it may be sports hobby or business.

Compassionate: Good leaders have compassion for the people, employs and supporters. While these leaders have goals to accomplish, they consistently care for the individuals that support them. They are not selfish and have hear for people they follow.

Charismatic: Most good leaders are charming and they draw the attention of the people by the way they talk and the way they carry themselves. They are excellent in building relations and maintaining them.

Persistent: They have strong will power towards their goal. They anticipate the problem towards their goals. They see that the advantage of attaining their goals is larger than that of the problems that occurred. This makes them intensely persistent individuals.

Integrity good leaders mean there words what they say. They don't play political games.

Daring they are bold. A great leader said" courage is the virtue on which all virtue rest on." - Winston Churchill.

Vijay Mallya believes in living life-king size. His sharp vision and guts to take on new challenges in life always gave him an edge over other business tycoons. He is the man who changed the usual perception about a so called 'multi-national company'.

A great part of the personality of the Kingfisher brand is based on Mallya's personality. He is credited with having single handedly changed the image of his beer brand from a commodity to a lifestyle brand. The Kingfisher brand commands a 29% share of the beer market in India and is sold in over 52 countries

Vijay Mallya, the flamboyant CEO of United Breweries - the company that owns the Kingfisher brand - is one of the most flamboyant CEOs in Asia. Vijay Mallya believes in leading his brand from the front by leveraging his personality.

He has built a reputation for splurging his money in the public Vijay Mallya's associations with the rich, trendy and the luxurious have rubbed on his business venture and the brands. Similarly to Richard Branson, he recently launched Kingfisher Airlines, which draws a lot of its brand equity from Mallya himself.

His mission statement reflects all of the leadership style mentioned above in this article.

Poor Communication by senior management: Poor communication brings ineffective work culture and the employees can be distracted from goals. Management's expectation would be different from what an employee would understand. This will draw a strained relationship between an employee and an employer.

Office politics: Different people have different state of mind. Most of them who are skillful workers don't want to indulge in any kind of politics. Forced to do that result in inefficient work which brings frustration in employee and employer too.

Lack of team work: every member of a team has a task assigned to achieve a single goal. If any member of team lack in his work, it can affect the whole team. This can create a friction among team member in an organization.

The use of politically correct language: the use of informal language can be offensive to some of them. It may not be appropriate at places where people from different culture are working. If people in an organization will not have good will among others, it can end up frustrating some of the colleges.

Nosy co-workers: back biting and sneaking into other peoples work is a frustration for most of the employees. Employees will be uncomfortable to work and it will bring uneasiness among them.
