This report will examine the organizational culture by using secondary data from the literature on the previous books as well as related articles. The first chapter of this report will provide the basic definition and classification of different types of organizational cultures that exist in the enterprise. The next chapter is a discussion and analysis of a particular company. Facebook was chosen as a company with a progressive culture and novelty factor.
1. Definition of Organizational Culture
According to Andrew Brown, organization culture mentions to the pattern of beliefs, values â€‹â€‹and learned how to deal with the experience developed in the course of the history of an organization, and tend to be expressed in the arrangement of object its nature and the behavior of its members. (Brown, 1998)
In another definition from the point of view of Tharp, organizational culture is a basic assumption model that the group acquired it solved the problem that it matches the outside and integration within the organization. This model is considered valid if it worked well enough to be communicated to the members of the group correctly to their perceptions, thoughts and feelings related to the problem. (Tharp, 2012)
2. Types of Organizational Culture
There are four organizational culture types in it according to Bruce M. Tharp.
"Collaborate (Clan)" Culture: Open and friendly work environment are two key elements of this type. Everyone can share each other about their work. The leaders are considered mentors. Benefits of human resource development is focused and organized have strong concern to people. Moreover, the organizers also set the rewards of teamwork, participation and agreement.
"Create (Adhocracy)" Culture: There are three elements in place for this type such the dynamic entrepreneurship and creativity. However, there have two opposing factors that are innovative and risk appetite. Experience and different think is the unified organization. They strive to become a leader in this specialized field. Long-term importance is the development of human resources and achieve new one. Organization believes that successfully means that the product or service that it is unique and novel. Everyone is encouraged to work actively and promote individual freedom.
"Control (Hierarchy)" Culture: Workspaces are highly structured and formal. Human behavior is governed by a list of rules and procedures. The most important thing is to maintain smooth operation of organizations. The goal of the organization that it works in this figure is the stability, performance and operational efficiency in the long term. Success of the organization is reliable delivery, smooth and low-cost plan. The management needs security and predictability.
"Compete (Market)" Culture: Organizations focus on finishing work. The target-oriented staff and compete against each other. Leaders are rigorous, rich experience and work efficiently. Reputation and success is the interest of the organization. The long-term focus based on competition, achievement of target measurement capabilities, and destination. Successful organizations consider that gain market share and market penetration. In addition, competitive price and the market leader are considered important elements.
In the next chapter, there is a discussion and analysis on Facebook's culture and how the biggest social network to be such a wonderful corporate culture in their "Hip geek culture".
C. Facebook - The biggest social network in the western world (Sparkes, 2011)
1. Discussion and Analysis
Facebook's organizational culture achieved a remarkable success by achieving their three key elements as follows: comfortable, unstructured and open. (McGirt, 2012)
. Comfortable: All staff are not set strict schedule, they are free to get to company and leave when they want. Environment working space at the company Facebook is designed with open space. Even Zuckerberg is also working in this space.
. Open: All employees are encouraged to work together in partnership. Team - work, intimate atmosphere and communication are favorite forms in Facebook Company. In addition, there are from Rock band to Wii and they are located in the appropriate place in the company to help employees relax.
This shows that Facebook is interested and focused on satisfaction of people. There is an interesting thing at Facebook headquarters in India is a good example, employees are allowed to paint the walls of their own work in the area. Facebook even hired David Choe who painted huge wallpaper on the wall of the first offices is famous Graffiti artist.
. Unstructured: Employees self-determine their satisfaction with their work in the organization. Satisfied with the work is also internal factors to achieve high productivity. Especially, hierarchy in Facebook is flat hierarchy. This system allows application in many countries and many different cultures. Employees can sit and chat with each other in order to make creative things. They may choose which team they want to be involved in and it creates good competition.
There was a point worth mentioning is that Facebook is 3,539 full-time employees. (Bullas, n.d.)
"Hip geek culture" was a well - known culture in Facebook. Zuckerberg tried to make an informal environment, even fun, to attract the best talent. He was banging a gong anytime if someone completed an important coding project.
Thus, we can see in the details, "Hip geek culture" of Facebook was built and development-oriented management structure which includes the development hierarchy. Allocation based on voluntary projects. In addition, the engineers have direct access to the data. They have the right to modify the basic code, rearrange the project, and combine them into new ideas whenever they want. Since then, people feel responsible for their products as well as work.
However, there still exist some disadvantages in the organizational culture of Facebook. Some employees said that they had no real career while working at Facebook. Facebook provides housing for employees that they are located around the head office but control other factors, such as cost and travel time for staff to spend more time working in the office.
The most important element is existing in Facebook's culture is collaborate culture as well as have great dedication to success in Facebook activities. They have admirable culture enough to attract many best employees in the industry all over the world. The employees are working more productive and innovative because they get a lot of perks from Facebook. They work with their all responsible for a lot of stuffs. In addition, they try their best to gain the best result.
However, Facebook had better improved or made human role better. They also decrease their minor negative risk.
