When we are talking in relation to diversity, we talk about the group who possess individual qualities that are diverse from our traits. Diversity is the uniqueness which every employee brings to the workplace in an organization or establishment. Examples of differences include nationality, belief, disabilities, physical appearance, race, gender, age, educational background, sexual orientation, and work experience, social and family status. At workplace, valuing diversity means creating a work environment that respects and includes variation individual by maximizing the potential of all employees or in which every employee feels included. It means acknowledging that other people, other races, other voices, and other cultures have an equal claim on the world. Valuing diversity is the recognition that there are many ways of viewing the world, solving problems, and working together.

Workplace diversity is the differences people bring in an organization. It encompasses learning and interacting with people who share different opinions, backgrounds from us and creating an environment which fosters diverse views and opinions. It does not only involve how people perceive or relate to themselves but how they perceive others and these perceptions do affect their interactions. "Most diversity experts believe that the significant distinctions are race, ethnicity, culture, religion, language, nation of origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities, occupation, and class" (Leo Parvis, 2003). Complications begin from workplace difficulties to diversity which can disorganize and create a hostile environment. These threats, if not exposed and resolved through effective leadership, will lead to loss of potential and ultimately failure in the undertakings of the organization. Furthermore, diversity is in an elevated studying curve and similar to others continuing ways to change, there are symbolic objections, entanglements and pitfalls. Diversity itself is not a problem but the problems lie in our attitude towards diversity. The public in this present day must deal with compound problems of an increasingly global society and must deal well with multicultural perspectives of increasingly different people worker at the locality and around the world.

This coursework centers on attempts to understand the challenges faced within the workplace as a result of diversity. The aim of this coursework is to identify these challenges at workplace, discover the causes and find ways to combat these challenges at workplaces. There are several challenges of diversity in the workplace. For poor diversity training and education, it has been criticized as being too confrontational and overly oppressive by organizations managing diversity initiatives. The diversity training exercise should not degrade or embarrass people. On the contrary, through well-designed approach, diversity trainings should enable people to know their faults of oppressive attitude and see how their actions affect others. Another challenge is the failure to discuss the profound issues of prejudice and marginalization which effective diversity initiatives discloses and addresses the reason people and groups are consistently marginalized in an organization.

Additionally, there is lack of genuine diversity leadership in which organizational management can talk or gain information on diversity. There is a need to be the able to determine the actualized vast organizational interference necessary to make diversity an organizational virtualization. Authentic diversity leadership needs leading by example and making judgments deliberative of that leadership. It is difficult to find a place in today's workforce is not varied.  Creating an environment that is acceptable and most favorable for performance is what you want in the business environment.  This reduces the likelihood that an employee will feel under-valued, which can lead to non-attendance to work and employee turnover.  Companies that respect and support individual employees ethnicity, age, gender, skills, and abilities provides an all-inclusive atmosphere which  allows employees to feel comfortable and also produces better results.  Understanding cultural mannerisms, linking them to their abilities and not taking their age and gender to heart may help the judgment of candidates for their job skills, and not their interview skills.

There are diverse people from all walks of life and therefore you'll need employees who represent these walks of life.  Employees with such diverse backgrounds bring different ideas to an organization. Today's business environment is occupied with people of all age groups, male and female, and different cultural backgrounds. Businesses should have the chance to take advantage this diversity and use it to benefit their company.  You have the younger generation with wide variety of nationalities that have different views and are able to assist through knowledge and their background, education and culturally. Another great example is trying to decide between an Asian employee within a business background and an American within the same background who possesses similar experience, drive, ambition, and objectives within that business to work on an assigned task within a company from Asia.  The Asian employee would have comparative advantage in completing the assigned task over the American employee. The Asian employee would better understand and communicate their background unlike the American who may be impacted due to cultural differences. 

Furthermore, there are advantages that make diverse environments important which in turn gives others a chance to learn the differences in cultures, and the beliefs associated with multiple perspectives.  It is vital that diversity is reflected at all levels, all key occupations, and in all organizational components which makes businesses valuable. Taking the importance of diversity in today's workforce is apart of building trade that replicate the society we live in this present day. Businesses can raise their demo graph through diversity in gender, age, ethnicity, and differences in skills and abilities.  It is imperative for the workforce to blend the differences for a ground-breaking environment. Everybody ought to have the opportunity to partake fully despite your differences.  Giving them this opportunity will allow them to expand their abilities and skills within the company

Also a lot of companies see growth in diversity in the workforce around them through their partners, vendors, and customer.  Companies that do well have the ability to effectively decipher problems, quickly become accustomed to situations, enthusiastically spot new opportunities and make the most of them with no difficulty.  As a result of having such a diverse workforce these typical job qualities can be valuable to the company and its ongoing services.  When doing business dealings with other companies within or outside of one's territory, businesses are expected to recognize, respond and/or deliver services that meet to expectations.  The ability of meeting these expectations is learned through vision.  Scoping co-workers of different gender, age and/or race perform their duties.  This will allow employees to have continuous improvement that will affect job skills, thinking process, and decision making ideas that will benefit the business they work in. 


In order to remedy the problem associated with the challenges faced by diversity at workplace, many organizations undertake diversity audits or scans that alert them to real life and perceived issues of discrimination and bias. In situations where an organization admires success, there is need for the organization to discuss discrimination at the all organizational levels. Whenever an organization is planning to train groups, they should initially decide on the aim, what success will look like and how it will be measured. Lack of training can cause more harm than no training at all. There should be an implementation of diversity in the workplace policies which can be the overriding challenge to all diversity advocates. Diversity training alone is not enough for an organization's diversity management plan when considering successful management of diversity in a workplace. A plan must be created and put in place to build a culture of diversity that will fill every unit and function of the organization. Furthermore, assessments of diversity in the workplace must be embarked when assessing and evaluating diversity process as a part of a management system. Implementing this assessment can assist the management team to determine the challenges and obstacles present in a workplace and initiate or improve policies, which fosters diversity. Those that implement diversity in the workplace plan should be the personal commitment of executive, managerial teams, leaders and managers within the organization. They must foster diversity policies into every aspect of the organization. Employees must be encouraged to express their ideas and opinions which would foster an attitude of openness in the organization. Managing diversity creates a balance that can make diversification work for both the organization and the employees.

Decision-making practices that develop better coworker relations are of great importance in a workforce composed of quite a lot of culturally diverse group of workers. Management need to be actively involved in identifying and helping to resolve issues that inevitably arise among coworkers. The connection between individual level performance, gratitude and rewards bestowed by management is very important. Every employee want to have clear proof that promotion, pay, and less substantial forms of rewards are based on how well they do in their jobs.

In conclusion, diversity is an important aspect in the workplace. We need diversity to offer the best service to customers, employees, affiliated companies, and share holders. Diversity offers personal difference in the people we work with. It is every employee's responsibility to ensure diversity is valued in the workplace. In every organization, employees should be open-minded and treat others with dignity, respect, courtesy and consideration and not tolerate harassment or discrimination. This creates a workplace that encourages learning and associating with people from diverse groups. With a diverse working environment and an equally diverse opportunity, the sky is the limit to what you can achieve during your career. In addition to a very important requirement when people deal with diversity is when there is a promotion of a "safe" place for people to communicate (Koonce, 2001).
