Leadership takes up in many forms in an organization and not even at workplace we have leaders around us, at home, in society, the country and the world. A leader is a person who not just inspires others but they are responsible to influence people towards the attainment of set and ad hoc goals. A leader has powers which is given in order to influence and make things happen. They have the power to reward, punish and command.

The religious culture also affects the decision making abilities and styles of the leader and the influence can be positive or negative. The characteristic of leaders depend on the background of the leaders. IF there was a previous leader in the family, the new leader has a chance of having some similarities form them which would be the height, weight, the way of dialogue presentation and also to some extend of similar way of commandments.

Traits of a person deal with the person's character and a leader's good characteristic is also one of the most important factors that honor and complement a good leader. Nobody needs a leader, who is dishonest and has criminal records. A leader's characteristic is the basis on how managers and the organization make assumptions on the leader's personality and with this personality; it is possible to predict how the leader would behave in a particular situation and with a particular set of powers.

Few personality or traits of a leader should include:

Being social

Wise communication

Being broadminded

Good anger management

Leadership skill includes a vast of actions from leaders. This is mostly unique form all the others which make them supportive and provide encouragement to everyone. Some of the basic leadership skills as described are the ability of being; informative , understanding individuality , planning and utilizing available resources, commanding , setting examples, representing, providing and gaining support from others

A leader's skill plays a vital role in steering the organization or the department as skilful leader will create a skilful unit of followers and a skilful unit will enhance and or create a skilful and successful organization. An organization can be lead by almost anyone in the organization but, it is not all about being in the position of a leader; to lead, a leader has to have specific skills that stand out from the others in the organization. Skills need to be contributed to an organization in order for it to make good choices and a leader will have abundance of skills as he/ she will perform as a resource book for the low level employees which can be referred to in almost any situation that out turns the skills available with the low level employees.

Few skills associated with a good leader can be:

Analytical and evaluating skills

Vast knowledge about the organization

Ability to understand others actions

To get and give information

Controlling the unit and setting good examples

Good planning including strategic movement

Has the ability to learn from others as well.

Attitudes in relation to management and leadership can be identified as partly behavior and mostly the thoughts and feelings. Some people are always positive about their job while some people are really negative and some people believe that they love their job while some of them hate what they do. Referred to as attitude, these behaviors mentioned above are actually different attitudes of different people. A leaders attitude should always be positive towards work as the organization or the department will see the leader as their role model and assume as what is does is right and do as the examples the leader has set for everyone. If the leader is negative about the organization and does not like the job or the organization and is expressing his/ her views to everyone, the followers will be resented against the organization. Vice versa if the leader is very positive, he or she creates a very positive work environment.

Below are the four main attitudes of all the leaders:

Directing - A member who is eagerness for the work but not a great deal genuine capability, for example much time doesn't need to be spent providing support or coax

Coaching - Coach all the followers as after a while a particular work becomes less interesting to foe everybody. The leaders provide effective coaching so none of the followers are let down.

Supporting - Leader's attitude also includes the role of being supportive to everybody. When a team member or follower is doing a work and is letting down at some point of time the leader's role is to be supportive and be along them to provide encouragement.

Delegating - This basically means that leaders should be able to believe in their team members and trust them as there would be a certain point of time when the leaders will have to leave the followers to do the work on their own ability.

The reason that ultimately it is the humans that control and monitor human activity in an organization being a leader; it is the leaders behavior that places an important role in making an organization to be lead in a desirable standard. A leader's behavior is how the individual or the leader behaves in the organization. A happy leader may create a happy environment, a sad leader may create a sulky environment and likewise a strict leader may create a stricter environment. Thus, the organizational leadership behavior directs how the organization listens and follows their leader. Every organization and in fact everybody needs a leader for direction and without a leader an organization will simply stray from its motive very easily.

There are many aspects of a leader's behavior in an organization and some of them are:

Mature behavior

Keeping promises

Have the ability to listen before making decisions

Being decisive and make sound decisions

Takes things professionally and not personally

Contemporary Development

These leaders develop skills as the events take place or during the time it is needed, this is also a temporary as this is developed to evaluate the cause of action during the time of necessity. This should change as the time passes.

Given the fact that all leaders are not equal in ability whether in same situation and position or different; what makes them different is the environment in which they are leading. In environment we can classify them as personal and professional. A professional environment is the organization culture or may be workplace rules and guidelines and the personal environment would be his or her cultural backgrounds and or family and career backgrounds.

All leaders should create the quality to communicate effectively to all the people, their ideas should be able to flow to others with the best understanding. Leadership is also providing informative value to people while meeting the organizations demands. Being a successful leader, one should maintain the best appearance, have integrity in making decisions and provide support to those who need it.

Private businesses do not employ many people this is mostly a small business who cut down labor cost or are despotic style as working alone to meet the business goal. The leader sets the goal for his confidential business and he has to alter himself into the variety of leader his small business needs. This is mostly known as a sole trader business as the owner/leader engages him in a variety of business related task and tries to develop skills to eliminate all the abstracts also cutting the cost of production and minimizing the expenses and maximize the profit or the returns from the business.

Chaska Punjab an Indian restaurant operated by Chaska Singh, based in Atkinson Avenue, Otahuhu, Auckland.

Two Dollar Plus and small private business which operates in Otahuhu, Auckland is run by Manito Singh.

Both leaders in the business are engaged in the daily activities of the business that are the proprietors of the business structure.

Leadership style

In a small private business the leadership style depends on the nature of the business, the amount of work involved, and the number of staff involved and also depending on the consumers who are the revenue of the business. The leader's styles in this business are developed by their traits, and the set of beliefs they have for the business. These are mostly Democracy or autocracy depending on the leadership nature as if their followers require supervision and facilitating then the leadership style is of a democratic leader where as if it requires more pushing in completion of a task then it is a autocrat.

In a small private business the leaders follow other leaders who are in the same field of business. A dairy shop leader would follower other dairy shop leaders to be able to complete and achieve is goals for the business. The workers follow the organizational leaders as they have to lead their workers in the direction of success.

The power's for his business always depends on the owner as he is the one who has the authority to make decisions about the business changes and rules for the followers and also sets the goals.

All the business communication are dealt with the leader of the organization. He is responsible for communicating about the business to outside parties. All the events which take place in the business must be informed to the leader. All the information and all the relevant data are to be kept with the leader of the organization.

Leaders in small private business develop the understanding that all the solutions don't work in the entire situation. They have to train them self to develop new leadership skills and styles for each situation.

These businesses are under guidance of more than one business leaders. This company provides services for longer hours or has more than one branch where each leader is unique in deploying his leadership ability which depends on the location, economic culture and the social behavior of public around the organization. These business leaders provide authority to other sub leaders to provide facilities and solutions according to their problems.

Sir Stephen Tindal - CEO and Managing Director for The Warehouse

Russell Stunners - CEO of Vodafone New Zealand

Leadership style

For a large sized public business, the leader ship style depends on the leader of the business. The leader has the authority to decide how to run the business, is it that he wants to provide freedom to his workers with less supervision to accomplish their task which would make it more laissea fair or democratic leadership style or should the leader be present and provide supervision to what work is being done and how it is to be completed which would be more of a autocratic leadership style.

However the leaders trend to leave the work in others supervision ( lower level manager ) who produce the end results of the business.

The followerships for this organization are on each other leader. A leader form one group followers other and in cases consult each other. The members of the organization receive leadership and are consulted to archive the required task in the given time.

The power's for his business always depends on the group leader as he is given the authority to make decisions about the business changes form the organizational leaders. The rules and regulation are set same for the workers at their level and the authority of powers are also allocated depending on their level.

The communication channels in this organization are more of a horizontal as the workers are advised to report to their heads who take action to solve their problems. Who if fail to provide solution then is taken further to another level of leaders. This is usually solved and only the report of the event is sent to the organizational leaders.

In this business, leaders may be able to use the previous solutions to solve the upcoming problems as there are normally same problems that reoccur in different economic environment. This solution normally has been used previously in one of their events in on another branch of the business which makes the final decisions similar and easier.

Small Private Business vs. Large Sized Public Business

The business structure for both of this business are different as in a small private business, the decisions, solution for problems, and the changes are made by a single person who is the leader of the business and in most business the leader is also the owner. The profit margin, goals and effect of economic changes are less in this organization.

For a Large sized public business the decision, solution and changes are discussed with other leaders or followers before they are actually taken in to action. The changes in the economic structure affect this business in a variety of matter as they are intact to a variety of product which attracts nationwide consumers.

Personal View

I think that the leadership concept takes in place depending on the situation the leader are involved in. I believe that all the leaders are made, they have became successful and known by others only because they have worked towards their goal not coz they were born as a leader. To become a successful leader we have to achieve the goals we set. I also believe that team work is the key to accomplish the given task and also the way to enhance good leadership skills.

Leaders encourage and push their staff towards making profit or meet their monthly goals. The business and the staff operate in such a way that they are trying to provide maximum customer service to the public by providing retail services, after sale service and sometimes as well as replacement services. These organizations motivate their staff by providing them with bonus and pay rise incentive but the main aim of the organization is to make maximize their returns.

Michael Luscombe CEO for Woolworths Limited

Leadership style

The leadership styles in this organization are mostly autocratic style. This is because the leaders have full control over their workers and their common task has to b achieved on the given time period. The workers have little to no say in the running of the business and all of them have to work towards their main goals for this organization which is to maximize profit and minimize the cost of production.

The followership in this organization is towards the leader. all the workers follow the leaders commandments to achieve the goals of the organization. All the followers comply with the leaders rule and regulation and work are done as it is planned.

All the powers to make changes in the business are with the leaders. All the task for the workers are allocated by him and they have to follow it on as every thg I planned ny the leader on daily basis to maximize the profit .

The communication channels in this organization are also of a horizontal structure as the workers are advised to report to their heads who take action to solve their problems. Who if fail to provide solution then is taken further to another level of leaders. But the chances of error are little as the leaders themselves plan the entire task for the workers.

As all the process is preplanned and the room for errors are limited the leaders try to eliminate all the problems as they arises.

Non profit business leaders are fully funded either by government or some other charitable organization. The leadership styles of the nonprofit organization are totally different compared to other organizations as these leaders are more encouraging and provide helping for a nonprofit organization the team members don't receive pay or wages. All the employees are motivated to obtaining a goal which would be beneficial to the public.

John War The CEO for Red Cross Society of New Zealand

David Ritter the CEO for Greenpeace campaign

Leadership style

For a nonprofit organization the leadership style is Charismatic Leadership and also transformational style, this is where the leaders motivate their followers and also provide support and also direct them to be able to complete task or to meet their goals and also respond to the given situation. Theses leadership styles are very useful as all the followers get together and work towards to the organizational goal and provide helping hand to others.

The followership in this organization is towards the common goal not the leader. All the followers put their hand to gather to achieve a common goal which is basically in the interest of the public or to support those who are in the need for help. The followers provide their personal time and dedication to achieve the organizational goal.

The leaders have the powers to make changes to the policies but they have to be consulted with the other members before a final decision is reached. Any doing of the leaders would reflect the organization as the whole. The aim for his organization is not to make profit but to provide services.

The communications for this organization are sometimes in direct. The members don't need to follow all the producers to raise a particular issue towards the board of members. The useful information is always discussed together with other before any action is taken into place.

These organizations come very useful in times of need by others. Theses organization responds to others when there a need for helping hand. Example the new clear testing and natural disasters.

Profit Business vs. Nonprofit organization

There is a major difference between the profit and nonprofit organization. The common difference is that the profit organization has is common aim which is to make maximum profit possible to them where as for a nonprofit organization which is funded by government or survive on donations have a common aim to provide services to the poor and needy when it is needed.

Personal View

For the leadership concept for profit and nonprofit organization, I believe that all the leaders have a common goal to achieve their task which is set by their organization. all the leaders work towards this goals either by providing support to the other or provide services in return for profit.

Social responsibility

This are companies that operate in a ethical way taking in to account that they have to earn profit at the same time also being responsible its natural environment and the people. These organizations provide back a potion form their profit to the community being socially responsible towards the environment.

In business leadership, the leaders have to decide how they could take care of their environment. All business has produced some kind of waste material which in some how or the other harm our natural habitat. Leaders have to make decision how they would be able to provide back a helping hand to the public. Business leaders have to be socially responsible to eliminate crime and natural harm in the by supporting the law group.

Telecom New Zealand have stated in their web site that they have become more socially responsible as they are now working with relevant authorities to ensure there is no internet bullying. They are also participating in recycling activities, power saving, fuel reduction initiatives and waste minimization.

Values are what we put importance to in daily lives and can include anything from the real world which means something for us and supply meaning to our life and influences decisions we make every day. At work place or any organization we are connected with has a set of values that stem from the corporate culture of that organization and rarely it would happen that our values align with that of the organization we are part of. A leader who is using the values based approach will make his followers value what they do at the organization and help them align well their values with the organizations values. For human resource to function well, freedom is also important to help them feel secure and wanted in the organization. Compare with the boss, he gains his power and authority to influence employees because of his position whereas, a successful leader gains his authority from to rule from the followers themselves and they want to willing fully work and contribute and listen to the leader. The leader values the value of the followers which makes him acceptable; the values of the leader play the important role in terms of the leaders ethically and favorable choices that influences and aligns the follower's values in a positive way. As the leader, it is his responsible to align the values of the followers with the organization which are not negative or will affect the organization. If the followers are invoked against the organization, then the organization may simply be doomed because without hardworking and supporting employees there cannot be any success.

Value based leadership methods can be adopted into day to day activities by:

Respecting people at work or anywhere you belong, actively value and honor the similarities, differences and contributions of every individual.

Do not harm people nor physically and not mentally. Express care for the emotional, physical, spiritual, social, and intellectual respect of every being within and outside of the organization and always be in favor of the organization you belong

Being optimistic ambassadors and representatives of the values, mission and purpose of your organization. Avoid doing activities that do not progress the organization or tarnish the future of the organization

Work with truthfulness in the management and growth of resources your organization has been hand over with. Create a habit of leaving things better than it previously was.

Responsibility to stake holders

A leader is the prime focus when it comes to having to engage employees ethically and responsibly to the organization because it is the leader who is in the middle between the management and the employees. The leader has the power to influence the employees either positively or negatively against the organization, therefore, whatever the leader does affects the organization directly and the stakeholders are affected indirectly. Understanding that a stakeholder is anybody associated with the organization including the leader himself, the employees, management and the shareholders; the leaders actions does affect every stakeholder to the organization.

Every stakeholder has vested interest with the organization and as a leader, he has to understand and respond to the different individual motivator needs of the stakeholders. The shareholders want action and return on investment as quick as possible and this need is focused back on the management to produce result in short term and to which the management enforces pressure on the leader to motivate and influence employees to produce results in short time. So basically, the achievement of the strategic goal lies in the hands of a good leader and the actions of the leader will determine if either or how fast the organization is able to meet deadlines and its strategic goals. A negative influence from a very trusted leader will create a rift between the management and the employees which affects every stakeholder and vice versa for a positive influence which will create levels of success.

The leader with his action can help the organization reach heights of achievement that will benefit employees, leader, management and the shareholders and every other stakeholder. Whereas, the wrong use of the powers of the leader can be a reason for the failure of the organization and the employees can even lose their jobs and the shareholder lose their vested interest. Suppose the factory leader intentionally or unintentionally invokes the followers and makes them regret being part of the organization and hate the management; the impact falls on the growth and production to decline due to the employees having no to less interest with the work they have and the management will obviously be pissed off and sacking the leader just creates more tension but in the end the losing party is the shareholders and if the shareholders give up on the issue, the factory might as well just cease to operate in the long run and when it ceases operation, every stakeholder is affected.

Impact on society

There are lots to know from an unethical acts carried out corrupt politicians and not to point any State, there are politically corrupt countries that cause damage to the society and country to benefit their own. Economically speaking, a politically corrupt country causes years of rebuild to cover for the damage to the society and becomes like a vicious cycle where a politician continues his /her unethical behavior year after year and to change the system is somewhat an impossible task. An unethical behavior from a politician impacts the society in many known ways both physically and emotionally while immoral behaviors are also carried out by politicians also influencing how the society behaves. A countries politician is like a leader to the country and people follow them, they guide us, thus, if these leaders guide us being unethical and immoral, it does affect us as the society to do what our leaders do. To understand the impacts on the society we first have to know about the types of unethical acts carried out by politicians assuming the fact that a public face has to batter media issues and all acts are publicized:

Drunk driving or any other common acts of crime on the roads

Drugs related issues which are supposedly illegal in the country

Use of public tax funds on personal and private posh activities

Breaking general laws of the country either criminal offence under statute or civil offence including private household matters which conflict the laws of the country

Being an ambassador to the country and carry out acts which tarnish the country. Example of a recent issue in New Zealand when a Member of Parliament was accused of making fun of Australian Rugby team during RWC 2011. Although not proven, such an act is an example and this behavior can be classified as unethical as well because if proven as guilty of such act the member can be disqualified from the cabinet.

Because the act is a illegal act, the public are asked to follow and what the public knows is that the government imposed this rule and if politicians themselves break this law than the people who are accused to break the particular laws or who already do not agree to it will accept it as a rightful thing to do because the problem with human mind is we like to find reasons to justify our acts and the unethical act of the politician givens all those justification seekers a reason to commit the crime. Focusing on matters like drugs or any other things that illegal to use, the public wants to use them but they are forbidden, this can spark outrage amongst the illegal users of drugs and somewhat weaken the justice system of the country and the government shouldn't be surprised if a protest is planned.

The point behind this is that would or will the politician be ethical in a public face when he or she is completely unethical in his or her private face? Well in my opinion, no. Everyone has a personal life but when a person becomes a public figure he or she needs to understand about his action and its impact on the society. Being a public servant means you have to put public interest ahead of your own and do realize your publicized private acts will also raise a concern about your performance as a political leader of the country and also affect the entire cabinet's success during the next election.

Whether leaders are made or born; and whether leadership is an science or art. Nevertheless, these are not commonly exclusive alternative. Leadership may be somewhat of talent; it still require the submission of special skill and technique even if there are confident natural qualities that makes one, these unusual talents need support and expansion. A person is not instinctive with self-confidence it is developed, honesty and truthfulness are a material of individual choice, inspiration to lead may come from within the person, and the understanding of commerce can be acquired. While cognitive capacity has its source partly in genes, it needs to be urbanized. None of these ingredients are acquired immediately.
