Leadership is a compound word that bears many meanings and virtually can be approached from different angles and perspectives. Leadership can be described as the process of leading or guiding a set group of people towards a set goal. This means that the process of a distinguished person leading a group of people towards a set goal is what factually is referred to s leadership. Leadership from a different perspective can be referred to as the political or social influence that a person may have on a set group of people towards a particular set goal. A good example is the way political leaders like Barrack Obama influence people positively to believe in their ideologies and vote for them. The process of convincing potential voters and directing them towards a common goal is its self a form of leadership. In other cases, we have social influence occurring on a specified group of people. This occurs majorly on people who are facing similar social issues or challenges. At the same time, it can occur to people who have common interests and goals to make change socially. When women leaders influence other women to stand up for gender equity that is leadership. When a woman leader influences other women leaders in America and beyond to campaign against women violence, which is leadership that spans out globally. Therefore, leadership is the ability to have influence on a certain group of people and guiding them towards a particular set goal (Sadler, 2003 p 6).

Leadership in relation with management

It cannot be denied that management and leadership have some connection but the fact is that they also have some differences. They influence one another but they are not automatically the same thing. Leadership is distinguished in terms of influence attained towards attaining a certain set goal through influencing people. Leadership can be practiced in social, political or business fields. Leadership has no limitation and it spans in different fields. (Sadler, 2003, p 16). Management mainly deals with business or activities, which have a monetary aim. Leadership does not have to be for monetary purposes, it ca be for charity or self-interest and passion to attain a certain goal. In management, there is controlling of staff in order to attain productivity. Leadership does not involve dictating or controlling people; a leader acts as a role model and inspires his subjects to work towards a particular goal. This shows that there is difference between leadership and management (Drucker, 2008. p22)

Who is a good leader?

The critical question of who is a good leader lingers in people's minds. This means people may have different opinions and stands as to what constitutes a good leader. The bottom line is a good leader is the one who inspires his subjects positively and leads them appropriately towards a particular set goal. At the same to would be foolish to fail to acknowledge the presence of bad leaders in our society. There are leaders who influence people and lead them towards wrong or evil directions. A good example is the rebel leaders mostly found in Africa. They influence people to fight against established governments or leadership forms. They inspire people to commit murder and other atrocities, which is so wrong. Bad leaders always influence people in a negative manner. The difference between a good leader and a bad leader is the validly of their reasons as to why they influence their subjects (Sadler, 2003, p 51).

Forms of leadership

There are a couple forms of leadership that exists and span in different fields. Political leader are individuals who have great influence in the political scene, they are well known and influential. A perfect example of a political leader is president Barrack Obama. There are business leaders, these are business moguls who govern the business cooperate world conveniently. They operate successful business cooperates that have made them Icons.  Bill Gates is a good example of a business leader. We have social leaders who actually influence and motivate people socially. They are activists for human rights and especially woman empowerment. An outstanding example is Oprah Winfrey. Finally we have religious leaders who deal with church matters. They are practically spiritual leaders who govern and guide people in terms of spiritual matters. Religious leaders lead people from different religious groups like Christianity and Muslims. The pope who leads the Catholic Church is an iconic business leader (Sadler,2003, p12).

Who is an effective leader?

A leader who works in collaboration with his subjects is factually a good and effective leader. A leader must be effective in order to attain his set goals within a speculated period. Leaders who do not have the characteristics that a good and effective leader must have actually do not fit the bill. This means their actions and leadership skills are way below standard.

Characteristics of an effective leader

An effective faces problems and comes up with solutions. To qualify to be termed as a leader, you must have the courage and capability to face problems. A leader therefore must be a person who is mentally upright and gifted. Despite all that, an effective leader must be able to face problems and come up with solution. This means that when a leader faced with problems, he should bear the capability to maintain composure and device solution. This is why a leader like Martin Luther is termed as effective because he could face problems and come up with solutions. His ability to be focused and objective in finding solution made him an effective leader (Sullivan, 2005, p32).

An effective leader must be observant and listening too. As a leader who knows the duties bestowed upon him or her, one should be observant. A business leader observes and knows that economic factors are changing and then he or she makes the right decision. This is why the world-renowned business personalities always see things like booms or economic crunches before many other people. This is so because they are keen and observant of what is really happening in the ground. A good leader listens to his subjects, through listening a leader learns more. By listening, I mean a leader should give his subjects a chance to express themselves freely without any limitation. When subjects express themselves freely, they pave way for their leaders to learn from them and improve in their work (Sullivan, 2005, p 33).

An effective leader paves way for teamwork. A true leader will not work on their own or isolate himself from his subject. A good leader calls for cooperation and teamwork. Teamwork ensures that everyone contributes positively and plays a vital role towards development. Goals and targets are easily attainable through teamwork other than personal efforts. This draws a clear picture why encouraging and sustaining teamwork should be a part of an effective leader. This explains why most successful business corporations in the world have leaders who embrace teamwork. It is through putting their employees together and inspiring them to greater heights leads to success. Conclusively, success is not an option for a person who wishes to attain success as a leader.

A true and effective leader communicates with his subjects conveniently. Communication is key in all forms of leadership. A competent leader should be able to communicate with his subjects well and effectively. The flow of information should be both ways, by this I mean from the leader to his subject and vice versa. Good communication eliminates all forms of misunderstanding and misinformation. This displays the actual need of engaging in good communication skills as leader. This explains why even world renown business and political leaders attend communication classes to ensure that their improve on their communication skills and communicate effectively to their subjects. When information flows well in all direction, progress becomes easier to attain (Sullivan, 2005, p 27).

A leader who is passionate and committed to his duties is termed as effective. A passionate leader does everything in a special manner that makes his work outstanding. There is no way a leader can climb the leadership ladder when he or she is not passionate about their work. Passion drives a person to work in all forms of environment. This actually concludes that environments and challenges cannot stop a good leader at all. An effective leader works in all forms of environment, which range from positive to negative. A good leader is also committed to his work. Despite all the challenges that may show up on the way, an effective leader always stays on point and focused. Focus, is very vital and key when it comes to leadership skills. A leader who remains to the work bestowed upon their care must remain focused to ensure that they attain their set goals. A passionate and committed leader acts as an inspiration to his subjects. Inspirational leaders always get a lot of support and motivation from their subjects (Sullivan, 2005, p 16).

An influential leader should be charismatic in his work. A charismatic leader has the energy and will power to work together with his subjects towards a set goal. Manpower is vital is vital in all operations relating to leadership and implementation of goals. The positive energy inside a leader plays a leading role when it comes to determining the support and motivation that he will receive from his subjects (Sullivan,2005,p39).

An effective leader is gender sensitive, He or she addresses the various challenges that members of different gender groups face. A good is example is the incorporation of women in different positions and giving them a chance to improve their lives by playing different roles in leadership matters. This is the main reason why leaders have to be gender sensitive to avoid locking one gender out of their plans and activities. Of recent gender, sensitive has gained grounds and that is the main reason why leaders consider women in employment and leadership positions. In the current world, many companies and institutions have women holding various positions in them. The main reason for this move is to lay ground for gender equity and consideration. This dictates that a good and effective leader ought to be gender sensitive (Grown, 2005, p 32).

Finally, a good leader does not dictate his subjects; he works in collaboration with them. We have seen different leaders act in unprofessional manner when it comes to leadership matters. A good example is the political leaders in Cuba. These leaders have misused power and they have led the country into both political and economical crisis. That is what when a leader is not cooperative but a dictator. An effective leader bears influence on his subjects through his works and cooperation. A cooperative leader has direct connection with his subjects. A cooperative leader gets admiration, motivation and assistance from his followers if he is cooperative.

Although leadership may and management may have some similarities, they have differences and that is what makes them two different identities. Leadership also influences management in various ways and the two have some connection too. At the same time, from my research I have concluded that an effective leader is made up of various qualities and characteristics. The outstanding traits of a leader prove who he is and what he stands for in his or her work. Good leadership leads to growth and development while bad leadership brings forth failure and dissatisfaction in the side of ones subjects. Leadership is vital in various fields ranging from political fields to business and religious matters. A good and effective leader is always an inspiration and motivation to his subjects. His leadership brings forth development, support and admiration by one's subjects.
