Is telecommuting beneficial

During the primitive ages man use to walk miles of distance to meet another person in another place. After the technological advancement were improved people used telephones, pagers, mobiles, fax machines and internet. In these days the nations are functioning as firm as they can to achieve their goals. Usually the staff is used to work from their administrative center, but in the twentieth century things have obtained a very diverse method in such a manner that, a worker can operate his job from a distance so far away from his employment place. This is due to the newest skills and gear spawned in the twentieth century. A member of staff can escalate to his seniors and the contemporaries via various means of connections such as a telephone, mail and video conferencing etc. This nature of work is been brought in action through a variety of organizations recently. According to the American Interactive Consumer Survey conducted by The Dieringer Research Group for the International Telework Association and Council (ITAC), “The number of employed Americans who performed any kind of work from home, with a frequency range from as little as 1 day a year to full-time, grew from 41.3 million in 2003 to 44.4 million in 2004, a 7.5% growth rate. The number of full-time telecommuters last year was 12 million, up from about 8.8 million in 2003. The number of telecommuters is increasing worldwide. Canadian telecommuters, for example, can recoup up to six full work weeks yearly -- an average hour a day -- by eliminating their daily commute.” Despite all the antithesis of several people on telecommuting, it is obvious that telecommuting has created positive effects under three factors such as technological factors, social factors and economical factors.

Firstly, the technological factors play a vital role in every individuals life. It is like a necessity for all in terms of communication. Despite of much criticism raised that technological factors leads to diminishing of physical interactions between people. What it means is that, it has made the society isolated. On the contrary it has created positive effects on telecommuting through technological factors. For example, in the olden days the ways of communication was directly meeting the person, but with the rise of new technological advancements today a person can meet another person through various means telecommuting. According to Toffler A's book- Future Shock “In a place where there has been low productivity and searching for new ways to increase telecommuting, the single most anti -productive way we can do is to ship millions of workers from one place to another place across the country every time.” Currently the major means of telecommuting is through internet which plays a vital role in today rapidly increasing business world.

Secondly, the social factors are also a key feature in telecommuting. In spite the opposition from many people that telecommuting is not flexible with social factors and society, but whereas the social factors have its own reasons to support telecommuting in various aspects. For example: an employee spending more time in the office but whereas with the help of telecommuting the person can work from home for his company which in return saves money and time of the employer, employee and the company. According to Capital region planning commission, “Telecommuting does not necessarily require special equipments, and rosters can differ in times. Employees can swap their time between the office and alternative work-site, come in for meetings, work at their house on special projects, and make necessary arrangements that suit both employer s well as the employee.”

Finally, another important claim is that telecommuting results in instability of economical factors. This negotiations are mainly depends on the facts on having telecommuting which exploits the employers of the organization in the form of inequality, social and cultural differences which results in communication gap between the employees and employer in the organization. Yet, most of the organizations accept to adopt telecommuting which will benefit the organization. For example: telecommuting helps improving the employer's productivity. Employees normally work 8 hours a day along with that they waste minimum 1 hour of their time in travelling. But if the employee telecommutes they can work more hours and save the time that he has wasted on travelling and because he works at home, working longer hours is possible. According to Business Voip, “Telecommuting helps reducing the over head costs for the employer. Commuting requires office space and additional branches for expanding the business, by telecommuting infrastructure cost and cost involved while expanding the business are neglected.” Telecommuting reduces the burden of recruiting employers by commuting every year employee retention increases due to relocation with the help of telecommuting an employee can work from any location and be a loyal employee to his employer.

In conclusion, telecommuting plays a vital role in every individual's life. As the time and telecommuting are the two faces of a coin which are also the key factors to an individual. On the contrary it has created positive effects on telecommuting through technological factors. Despite all the antithesis of several people on telecommuting, it is obvious that telecommuting has created positive effects under three factors such as technological factors, social factors and economical factors.
