How does an organization start its operations? There is always an important concern of managing the right set of procedures to attain outcomes. For an individual to succeed there is the need of proper planning at place. Transitions are the part of life cycle. An entrepreneur, who wishes to explore his concepts and ideas into reality, starts of with his own venture at one time or the other and adds to the growth of the economy of their country (Sathe, 2003). There comes the importance of proper planning at work place. The conversion of ideas into reality is the most crucial task for an individual.
An individual starts his own enterprise making use of his ideas and converts them into reality with lots of aspirations (Morris & Kuratko, 2002). This process is not an easy task. There are continuous transitions at one instance or the other for successful flow of an operation. Therefore, the research here aims to explore the concept at hand and come up with the reasons for this state of transition. The researcher would explore main theories that relate with the theory of leadership. This exploration forms a base to understand the roles and responsibilities and values of an individual as a leader. Based on the theories, the researcher would explore further the concept making use of the primary data as well to reach to the conclusion. Thus, the proposal here would explore the concept right from the initiation of the project by an entrepreneur, to the state of transition and success. The primary as well as secondary data would be used in the research to make this look stronger.
Researchers (Tarabishy et al., 2005; Gupta et al., 2004) have contributed a lot to relate the two terms entrepreneurship and leadership into a single term entrepreneurial leadership. His new model is of importance to represent the leadership and entrepreneurship skills of an individual (Tarabishy et al., 2005). For an entrepreneur, it becomes most important to begin his organizational operations with the proper management of resources. There comes the need to have proper management of human resource asset at work place. The HR department is usually responsible for the compliance of the rules and regulations that are set for the organization. The competency in managing the HR activities in these leaders can help produce flexible as well as adaptive employees for the organization (Gomez-Mejia, 2001). However, the entrepreneurs at their early stages are liable for the direct impact of the HR strategies being designed. Though at the later stages, both the HR management and the entrepreneur share the accountability in order to handle such situation.
For the successful run of the business operation, there comes the need to have an entrepreneurial leader, with unique set of skills to manage the business operations in a successful manner (Cohen, 2004). The success of any organization therefore begins with the strong base of team created by the entrepreneurial leader. Thus, an entrepreneur is required to make a good team for his organizationsââ‚¬â„¢ regular operational activities. These candidates should actively be involved in managing the transition in the organization at inception stage. In case of the conflicts, the entrepreneur shall take the responsibility to handle such situation. He needs to identify the needs of individual customers and do the tasks related to time management in such a manner that there are maximum outcomes, with the limited set of resources. This is most crucial at early stages of an organizationââ‚¬â„¢s operations.
Early stages demand continuous change. There shall be regular up gradations in the management of the process in an organization, else the future might be in trouble. The leader shall thus need to follow strategies for success. An entrepreneur can form the strong base for his organization by using right set of skills of managing human assets as discussed in various books etc. (Aitchison, 2007; Ramlall, 2006; Selmer & Chiu, 2004).
MBTI tests are considered as the interesting ways of assessing the leadership trait of an individual. Around 3.7 million people in this world complete Myers-Briggs personality indicator inventory (MBTI) per year (Briggs Myers 2000). These tests also help to measure the performance level of an individual to estimate/measure future performances. Based on the results, an individual can analyse his future scope of performance as a leader. These tests are quite interesting assessment tools that consist of some standard procedures to measure memory, intelligence, aptitude, sensitivity or personality (Colman, 2003), to ensure whether the person has leadership trait or not.
3.1 Data Collection
This research will be carried out mainly by using primary as well as secondary research data. Research is the systematic collection of data and processing of the same into meaningful information, to find things out. Primary research will involve collection of the data from the original source, while secondary research would rely on data collected by others.
As stated above the research study hereon would consist of the gathering of both secondary and primary data. The reason behind using multiple sources and types of data is to reduce the biases that can be caused by adopting just one method instead of both (Richards & Hall, 2000). This research will be conducted following an inductive and mixed approach in order to achieve the purpose of this project. Suitable methods of collecting relevant & observed data will be adopted and the data then would be processed in order to make it more relevant to this context. Since the project will be using the primary as well as secondary data, the research outcomes are expected to be quite better. For primary data collection, structured questionnaire would be used as a tool to collect data using depth interviews. For secondary data collection, sources like books, articles appearing in journals and other publications, research papers submitted to the Universities and sources available in Electronic media of the internet would be used to collect the necessary information on the subject under study, to conclude a comprehensive research. Thus, the outcomes would be obtained based on the primary as well as secondary data collected.
3.2 Research Problem
Entrepreneurs are the great part of contributor to the economy of any country. These are the individuals, who make a difference between leaders and followers. However, we can see from the records that most of businesses fail at their inception stage. This is mainly due to lack of planning at place. Therefore, it is crucial to explore the problem that, an entrepreneur faces and how he deals with these problems.
3.3 Aims and Objectives
The research here aims to explore the main factors that lead to transition of leadership at certain instances.
The objective of this research is to explore the theories of leadership and understand the main factors that are affecting the state of transition of an individual, working as a leader. The theories, which can play a major role for the success of an entrepreneur is also explored in the research.
3.4 Research Questions
The following were the research questions aimed to achieve the aims and objectives of the research study:-
What are the various theories of leadership?
How do they apply to entrepreneurs?
How does strategy fit into all of this?
Are there theories that also apply to start up teams?
What are the actual causes of leadership transition?
Can academic theory explain these leadership transitions?
From the above we can conclude that the research would be of great help for the entrepreneurial leaders who are looking for explorations. These leaders are, at most of the instances in the stage of failure. However, using right set of skills their transition stage can be a huge success for them. The use of right set of skills can help these organizations at their nurturing stage, to grow at such a pace that the transitions are in the right direction.
An individual shall make use of the tests such as MBTI test to know beforehand about his future potential for the organizational success. This could help to know in advance about the potential of an entrepreneurial leader, and could help him take right decision before the transitions are against him.
The research titled as, ââ‚¬ËœEntrepreneur leadership and transitionââ‚¬â„¢ would be divided into different chapters to understand the leadership characteristics and various transition states. First, the data would be researched (i.e. the secondary data), to understand the leadership theories. This would be followed by the primary data collection. Structured questionnaire would be used for this purpose. Thereon, the use of literature review and the secondary data would be used along with the primary data to come up with the findings.
