The two terms named as manager and a leader is used as one another. The management is considered as supervising the people to get the things done to meet the objectives of the organization. Along with that manager is usually involved in specific situations and processes to solve the short term problems. Considering the management, people are interlinked with each other working towards the common goal through their specified roles. Whereas leadership is concerned with the quality to bring into the system. The leadership process is a spontaneous reaction of a particular situation which could bring the positive or negative impact on the organization.

A manager with the successful career may have the asset of leadership qualities. On the other side a leader could be transformed as manager but it is not necessary that a manager could be a leader. The goal of the manager is to establish and maximize the performance of the organization whereas the leader always seeks and identify the further possibilities to put into the current system to make the organization more effective. It has also been seen that the workforce is usually more loyal and trust worthy for the leader than the manager.

To fulfil the organizational goals, organizations employ the managers and authorize them to entertain and manage the workforce and on the other side, the work force want to follow the leaders but not the managers. The reason behind this attitude is not that they do not want to do it, but actually they like to it by all means. Infect, the leaders does not have the capability to reward on any employees performance but they workforce can initiate to gather their requirements and bring into the leader attention. And managers have just to rely on the performance of the employees to establish the link between performance and company goals.

The process of management is usually described as the timed actions, precision and detailed analysis of the employee job role. And on the other side, leadership is totally based on the goal setting, sharing of visions, aligning the goals and inspiration with the integration of the time link. It is obvious to say that good leadership is part of good management and good management is a part of good leadership. If a leader does not management skills and manager does not have leadership skills, they are failed to produce the required results. It depicts that learning the management techniques is a science and leadership is an art of facts. To become a great leader could be learned with the passage of time, whereas the born leaders have multi directional qualities in them and can never be met.

The success of the organization is purely based on both of them such as strong leadership and great management.

Leadership in Nokia

To analyse the impact of management and leadership style on the achievement of the set objectives, I am going to discuss the chief executive of Nokia Mobile co named Jorma Ollila. He is a highly qualified individual having two Master degrees in political science and economics from University of Helsinki and London school of Economics respectively. After graduating from the London school of Economics, he was awarded with an honorary PhD degree from the University of Helsinki in 1995 and again another honorary PhD degree in technology in 1998 from the same university.

Being one of the most successful leaders in the world, he had a marvellous experience of information communication and technology. He is not only serving Nokia but also has integrated his service with various industries. He is also the executive member of many professional institutions due to his professionalism, success and experience. Jorma is one of the leading professional, who has been given honorary citizenships to various countries from China to Poland and has restated many businesses. Along with that, he initiated the Nokia business to make and restructure it to the world leading organization with his ambitious strategies. Under the influence of his leadership umbrella, Nokia has been declared the world’s number one ranking organization not only in mobile phone but also in telecommunication infrastructure.

Being the leader of Nokia, Jorma had shown his concerns not only with the employees but also with their designated tasks. He always nourished the people and their new ideas and believed in the openness and equal opportunities to everyone. Development of employees is also the key part of his leadership. He always encourages the employees to be more educated and get developed personally and held them responsible to attend the available opportunities surround. Apart from that, he always encourages to come under the open sky for the debate or discussion and he says, he does not only listen to his employees but also act on their relevant and useful ideas when prepares for the business practices and policies.

He also showed his concerns to the development and training programmes for his employees such as (IIP) Investigate in people programme. He always listens to his employees and keep them flexible for their jobs meeting the local standards of the market. He always encourages and appreciates various timing slots and working hours to the employees. Apart from that, he has designed, valued and introduced a very flexible approach towards the employment with in the Nokia. Nokia’s strategies towards the employees are the main reflection of the correct system for the rest of the world. Nokia has also got the bonus scheme for their employees to encourage their interest in their jobs.

Finally, if we look through the birds-eye-view, we can see that Jorma is a successful leader having various leadership and management qualities with the high level of general knowledge about employees. He does not only have the ability to motivate the employees but also has a marvellous leadership style which has made Nokia the number one organization in the world.

Leadership can be defined as the quality to induce someone into the organization success. It is obvious that a leader is required by all the organizations, who show the right path to employees to meet the goals and objectives. The goals of leaders are quite entrepreneurial and are undertaken by the organizations positively.

The strategic objectives of the organization are based on the development, identification and sustaining of the leadership. If the organization does not have leaders, or have lack of leaders at every level, the organization may have under performance issues. It may not only short run of its goals but also lose the opportunities of the strategic management. It will affect the profitability and revenue of the organization.

He has a very strong background of education and got two Master degrees and two PhD honorary degrees within the disciplines of political science and economics.

He is expert in the information communication technology field with the huge experience.

Jorma, entertains the equal opportunities and flexible working hours approach for his employees.


Zhang, the famous leader has a task oriented approach of leadership.

He is quick in identifying the needs to change the organization rules and setting up the goals for the employees.

He classifies the tasks to each department within the organization in a very specific way to achieve the company goals.

Giving and integrating importance to the employees is his main theme and he also has strong relations within some universities and employees hundred of new graduates every year.

In the era of 21st century, many people are trying to identify the best leadership style within the management of an organization. And the research has shown that, there is not even a single style which is best suitable for every situation. Various leadership styles are useful for various situations. The leaders are considered to be successful, if they choose to deviate their leadership style according to the demand maintaining their own unique style. I believe that my leadership style is very much relevant to the situational leadership, which is used to identify the demands of the current situation. As a leader I will not give the direction to my employees but will also create and establish a socio-emotional relationship with them. I will also create readiness among them, which would give me results at an individual and at collective level.

I will expect the employees to be more productive when I will direct them towards their goals in a particular situation while entertaining them with rewards. The reward scheme would encourage them to work hard to meet the objectives of the organization more effectively. The integration of socio-emotional relationship with them will give me the chance to speak to them about their related issues not only relevant to work but also the home life ones. It will create the more understanding between us through communication and they will feel like family to work towards the same goal and every one will be befitted from the feeling of success and achievement. The readiness would also make a positive impact on the organization performance and every one would be able to participate up to their best level and maximize the organization revenue and success.

Four theories are described in detail as below.

Trait Theories

The assumption of the Trait theory is the inheritance of few qualities and strategic traits that make the leaders suited for certain situations. These theories usually identify certain types of personalities and characteristics at behavioural level which are commonly entertained by various leaders indeed.

Contingency Theories

The contingency theory of leadership is mainly based on the environmental variables, those can determine the style of leadership is required in a particular situation. This theory indicates that there is not style which is best suitable in any given situation.

Situational Theories

This theory depicts that which course of action is appropriate in a particular situation and these are based on the situational variables. In this type, various types of decision making attributes are considered to be more appropriate.

Behavioral Theories

The theory of behavioural leadership believes that the great leaders are made but not born. This theory does not believe in the future instinct or ability to forseen the future but believes the course of action in the given situation. This theory establishes the link between observation and teaching.
