In this report we will be discussing the topic of leadership, transformational leadership and a detail of its components. Along with this there is an analysis of the feedback received by members within the group which are basically the strengths & weaknesses of each individual in the group and how we will have to maintain our strengths and overcome from our weaknesses.
The process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it
And the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives. (YUKL, 2010:26)
It's an art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal.
Put even more simply, the leader is the inspiration and director of the action. He or she is the person in the group that possesses the combination of personality and skills that makes others want to follow his or her direction.
In business, leadership is welded to performance. Effective leaders are those who increase their company's' bottom lines.
To further confuse the issue, we tend to use the terms "leadership" and "management" interchangeably, referring to a company's management structure as its leadership, or to individuals who are actually managers as the "leaders" of various management teams.
To be effective, a leader certainly has to manage the resources at his/her disposal. But leadership also involves communicating, influencing, inspiring and supervising - just to name four more of the main skills a leader has to have to be successful as a leader in the corporate world.
Features of a Leader:
A Leader of a group relates the group members to a common purpose.
Leaders are made especially for conducting tasks that are high in complexity and have many interdependent subtasks.
Motivating its group members through its skills like influencing, motivating, communicating, listening and other leadership features.
Leaders motivate followers to work for the goals that go beyond self-interest.
Leaders arouse emotions in their followers which motivates them to act beyond the framework.
Leadership is proactive and forms new expectations in followers.
Leadership creates learning opportunities for their followers and stimulate followers to solve the problems.
Leaders possess good visioning and management skills, to develop strong emotional relation with the group members.
Kinds of Leadership
Formal Leadership - Appointed in the Hierarchy by the management.
Informal Leadership - Exercises influence but is not in formal position; can initiate or block action.
"Transformational Leadership is a process of engendering motivation and commitment, creating a vision for transforming the performance of the organisation, and appealing to the higher ideals and values of followers". LAURIE J MULLINS
Being a Transformational Leader, an individual should keep the following things in mind:
Each individual is different.
Followers' have different needs & show different levels of potential.
You need to develop higher levels of potential.
It cannot be achieved by showing the same level of attention.
You should take special care of each individual follower's need for achievement and growth.
Provide supportive environment.
Have clear two-way communication in understanding their concerns.
Develop your follower by delegating tasks.
Increases follower's confidence and morale.
Riggio, R.E. (2009, March 24). Are you a transformational leader. Psychology Today. http://blogs.psychologytoday.com/blog/cutting-edge-leadership/200903/are-you-transformational-leader
There are four components of transformational leadership:
1. Idealized Influence.
2. Inspirational Motivation.
3. Intellectual Stimulation.
4. Individualized Consideration.
These are also referred as four I's of Transformational Leadership. These components are briefly described below-
Influence is the first and the most important outcome of all leadership qualities. The stress on influence is more with the word 'Idealized'.
As a Transformational Leader,
You should have the capability to become the role model for your group members.
You are respected & admired by your followers.
The group members have a separate place for you in their heart.
You have an absolute trust on your followers and they also have it for you.
Your followers understand that you have great potential and determination which will take them to higher levels.
You are having the willingness to take risks and be consistent.
In any situation, you show high standards of conduct.
Burns, J.M. (1978). Leadership. N.Y: Harper and Raw.
One or the other way, Inspiration and Motivation are always part of leadership. We know about Inspiration and motivation separately and they are used interchangeably. There is a slight difference in these two things and is described below.
Motivation really comes down to inspiration.
Since motivation comes from within, it is a form of self-inspiration.
This process is nurtured by watching others achieve their goals.
Mostly it is developed by following the example of leaders who do the right thing for people.
Communicate frequently and sacrifice for others are some of the key things to motivate and inspire the followers.
Bass,B. M,(1985). Leadership and Performance. N. Y,: Free Press.
Intellectual Stimulation is defined as the natural inner revert of an individual because of the gestures and expressions showed to him in his performance.
It is a dual aspect component because the expressions can either be positive or negative depending upon his/her performance which ultimately affects the individual morale.
Intellectual Stimulation includes the following factors:
It deals with stimulating follower's analytical skills and problem solving ability.
Everyone has the skill to analyze problems in their hand.
Each one has a different approach to an issue.
As a Transformational Leader, you need to allow followers' to come up with their solution for the same problem.
If the issue is not understandable you can help them to re-frame it.
Encourage them to approach old issues with new methods to come up with meaningful output.Â
Encourage their creativity and innovation.
Don't criticize or don't pass comments in public.
It is a component that includes an important issue for a leader of any organization. The efforts of every individual should be considered equally as others without any Bias because it is an important thing that helps the team members to build trust on each other.
If the contribution of a follower is not considered by the leader then it will badly effect the overall objective of the group or organization because a sense of dishonored and it keeps in the mind of that individual.

VIEWS: I mostly consider the efforts made by any member of the group and my gestures and expressions are quiet good sometimes that motivates and inspires the follower to work hard in future and give his best to the group and the organisation.
