GlaxoSmithKline is working from 10 years. In the year 2000 GlaxoSmithKline set up its business and now it is words fourth largest pharmaceutical company after Roche, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson. In 1880, Burroughs Wellcome & Company was founded in London by American pharmacists Henry Wellcome and Silas Burroughs. The Wellcome Tropical Research Laboratories opened in 1902. In 1959 the Wellcome Company bought McDougall & Robertson Inc. to become more active in animal health. The Wellcome Company production centre was moved from New York to North Carolina in 1970 and the following year another research centre was built.

Based on the net income it is the second largest pharmaceutical company of the world. The company had sales of £22.7 billion and made a profit of £ 7.8 billion in year 2007. 2010 marks the GlaxoSmithKline Group's 10-years anniversary which is celebrated with the granting of employee shares to the Group's some 7,000 employees and by a unique seminar tour which focussed on the future of the cement industry.

Today, more than 650 of the 9,000 people who make up the company's workforce are directly involved in developing the technology of the future.

Job satisfaction and employee commitment remain very important factors to monitor in GlaxoSmithKline. As the overarching endeavour, the global tri-annual employee survey engagement survey has been planned for the end of 2008/2009 to follow up on initiatives anchored in the survey from 2005/2006 which was launched in our three geographical project centres. As the previous survey the aim is further strengthening of employees' satisfaction and loyalty by measuring satisfaction, motivation and engagement as well as analyzing the effect of activities implemented as a result of prior surveys. Future surveys will be launched in every GlaxoSmithKline organisation worldwide and may cover other factors which are also important to GlaxoSmithKline at the time of surveying in order to ensure the strategic use of the survey.

Why motivation is very much needful to the employee in the period of recession?

Motivation is to give reason, incentive, enthusiasm, or interest that causes a specific action or certain behaviour. Motivation is present in every life function. Simple acts such as eating are motivated by hunger. Education is motivated by desire for knowledge. Motivators can be anything from reward to coercion. According to me it is more helpful in the difficult time and here it is the recession. As per economics recession is business cycle contraction it is a general slowdown in economy activity over a period of time. During this period macroeconomic indicators vary in similar way. So this all the pressure builds up on the mind of the employees by the way of managers. Main reason behind it is that business loss always yields decreasing slope in employer's salary graph. It indirectly affects the employers mind from different situation. It also affects social and economic life of the employers. During this time MOTIVATION only a thing which can drag employers out of the depression. It is very important to motivate employees during recession because they are only the people who have the power to overcome this situation. Motivation helpful for them by treating their mind in the way of success. According to me a person who knows how to convert depressed mind of employees to overcome way of the recession, is called true businessman. Often we see managers go straight to - give money to employee as a motivational tool. They try and motivate by giving bonuses or raises as their sole motivational strategy. The problem with this is that people are not motivated by money .They are motivated by the feeling that having money creates - the emotions that buying something with money creates.

When you give someone money you are really trying to give someone the feelings that money creates in them. However, you cannot be sure of how the money will be used and the feeling you are creating. It's a hit and miss strategy in terms of motivation and as a result you get inconsistent results with people.

What we're going to see with the recession is a burst in the use of incentive programs, because they're a very low-cost, targeted way to improve performance. Despite the economic gloom, the emerging picture of the incentives market is its use of vouchers as rewards. A survey by the CIPD this year found just over a quarter of UK companies were running a rewards strategy while 24% plan to take this approach this year.
