Emotional intelligence is defined as "the form of social intelligence that involves monitoring self and others' feelings and emotions, distinguish among them, and use that information to guide self thinking and action (Success, 2009)."

Leaders with expertise in emotional intelligence are more successful as compare to others as they develop mutual trust, respect, and warmth.

ILM Award in Team Leading

The Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) is premier awarding body for management training, which aims to build leadership and management at individual, team and organizational levels (Learning, 2010).

This module added my basic skills set for becoming a leader. This taught me developing myself as leader, how to motivate team to work, workplace communication, and managing you.

ILM Certification in Team Leading

This is more advanced and high level of leadership recognition with some mandatory in-company training. Most useful and valued component of this certification is planning and monitoring work. It has many optional modules and could be tailored to organizational needs (Development, 2010).

De Bono 6 thinking hats

The de Bono Hats System is a thinking tool for individual or group thinking combined with the idea of parallel thinking, it provides mean to group think together more effectively. It means to plan thinking processes in a detailed and cohesive way (de Bono, 1985).

This module helped me in overcoming information overload, determining feelings and emotions, taking critical decisions, having positive attitude, developing new ideas, and keeping focus on bigger picture.

Public Speaking Techniques

When it comes to public speaking this is not less than a gigantic task for many. This module helps us in effectively overcoming this fear. As, I have learned from the module, "Public speaking is the art of speaking to a group of people in a structured manner intended to inform and influence the audience.

This module helped me in mastering the art of public speaking by structured and hierarchical fashion with practical examples and experiences (Buzzle.com, 2009).


When it comes to entrepreneur sills one cant negate the absolute need and important of sound negotiation skills. However, these can be developed and used for business advantage particularly when it comes to win contract and ventures (Yahoo, 2005).

This module was very helpful in nurturing my negotiation skills as a key role of CIO. From this module I have learned that preparation and time sensitive negotiations often bring fruit.

Managing Projects

In this module, I learned planning. Organizing, and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific projects goals and objectives. There are different project management approaches for various applications.

This learning module taught me the primary challenge of project management is to achieve all the project goals and objectives while honoring the preconceived project constraints, such as; scope, time, and budget (Reh, 2010).

Strategic Management

Strategic or institutional management is the process of drafting, implementing, and evaluating cross-functional decision making to enable an organization to achieve its long term objectives. It is about specifying organization's mission, vision, objectives, developing policies and plans, defined to achieve these objectives (Wikipedia, 2010).

This module teaches strategic formulation, evaluation, approaches, hierarchy, limitations and why plans fail.

Strategic Marketing

This module introduces Strategic Marketing as a process allows an organization to concentrate its limited resources on greatest opportunities to increase sales and achieve a sustainable competitive advantage.

As per my learning, I have found by practical practice that strategic marketing plan makes sure the company's resources are not wasted and they do not let any opportunity go away.

Information System Management

The management information system (MIS) is the discipline dealing with integration of computer systems with aim and objective on an organization.

We know for sure by attending this module that information technology tools assists executive and the general workforce in performing any tasks related to the processing of information. The MIS and business systems are especially useful in the collation of business data and the production of reports for decision making (BPC, 2009).

Human Resource Management

Human Resources Management (HRM) is the strategic and coherent approach to the management of an organization's most valuable assets - people working there to attain the objectives of the business (Wikipedia, Human resource management, 2010).

It taught me processes of Organizational Management, Personnel Administration, Manpower Management, and Industrial Management.

Organizational Behavior and Change Management

Organizational behavior is the systematic study and careful application of knowledge about how people act within an organization in personal and group level (Wikipedia, Organizational studies, 2010). Change Management is a set of processes that is employed to ensure that significant changes are implemented in an orderly, controlled and systematic way to effect organizational change (Bits, 2010).

I learned that organizational change management takes into consideration both processes and tools that managers use to make changes.

Reflection and analysis

In this section we will briefly describe new things and key learning from each module and some learning application in real life wherever appropriate.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People taught me characteristics which are needed to be successful in practical life have been practiced by some great leaders. This was instrumental in my learning as leader as CIO and help me overcome the fears and challenges which come with such a responsibility.

From this module taught me mind maps, organizing ideas, brainstorming, memory development, concentration development, and increasing productivity.

This module appreciated the non-intellective intelligence which increased my leadership abilities. As this theory was supported by the Ohio State leadership Studies (1940's) which showed that leaders with successful relationships with employees based on trust, respect, and a certain degree of warmth and rapport will be more effective.

In real life this module learning would be very useful in having good understanding of the team leader role, know how to motivate and gain the best from their teams, have practical skills and knowledge that can be quickly transferred to the workplace, and gain a reputed award.

The most useful trait I learned from this module was planning and monitoring work. This was basic skills needed in getting work done from my team and appreciates the good work.

This module of six thinking hats has been multifaceted learning experience for me. Combined with parallel thinking, I was able to have background for taking strong, critical and important decision in my job role as CIO. I am able to develop positive attitude towards life and have method to develop new ideas.

The seventh module I learned was about public speaking skills. This helped me a lot in performing my role and duties as CIO in a government organization. One of the occasions when my team was down due to stress and workload, I was able to win them motivation and understanding on future goals.

The eighth module taught me the importance of preparation and sense of good timing for negotiations to be successful. On need to put ego behind and should be a good listener. Stick to the principles and stick with your principles. As my role as CIO in a public organization, I successfully used such negotiation skills and made some good progress.

Project management inculcates in me skills of defining a project scope, determining resources, keep track of timing, assemble project team, list big and small steps to execute the project, develop primary and baseline plan, work on plan and monitoring team's progress.

The strategic management module learning outcomes at the successful learning of the course were; strategic formulation, strategic evaluation, general approaches, hierarchy, limitations and reasons behind plans and failure.

After taking this module, I was able to understand that strategic management is very important to avoid organizational resources wastage. Its proper implementation and execution lead to strategic competitive advantage which many organizations are very keen for.

As computers and their applications become ubiquitous, there is hardly any business that could survive without it. I have found the there are specific fields in which MIS has become invaluable; Strategy Support, enhance Supply Chain management, and Data processing.

This module was about Human Resource Management (HRM) which was very useful at my strategic position as CIO in the company and I was able to management company's most precious resources - the people. The HRM at different levels of organization provided with advantages and benefits.

The last module I studied was about organizational behavior and change management. This was very important in a sense that management role is very important in bringing any change so its first responsibility is to identify processes or behaviors that are not proficient and come up with new behavior and effective change management plan.

Modules role in leadership

Each of modules was design very carefully and delivered by very credible and reputed instructors and professionals. Modules hierarchy was carefully designed and practical oriented. Every module was instrumental in learning and has established credibility. I have taken fourteen modules and each one had added significant value as a successful leader of 21st century.

For example, first course taught me what are highest skills set to be developed as leader. In second module, I learned to make mind maps in order to refresh, retain and use my memory and concentration to be most productive. The thirds module gave me understanding and skills to recognize that non-intellective intelligence is as important as intellective intelligence. I was more successful by inculcating both parts of intelligence in my role as CIO in a public office.

The forth module not only gave me team leader role understanding, motivating teams, practical skills to get maximum from workspace but also gave me reputed award to be accepted as leader. Fifth module gave me skills of planning and monitoring work. The sixth module of De Bono 6 Thinking Hats, developed new effective thinking skills in me and helped in having the big picture view. The seven modules helped me in imparting public speaking skills and overcoming related fears. This was good skill to get equip with. The eighth module taught me how to become a skilled negotiator, I am of the view that negotiation is all about, doing your homework, have sense of good timing, be a good listener, and sticking with one's principles.

Ninth module that I learned was about project management. This was pivotal in executing job that I was given in capacity of CIO to perform as per set criteria. I was able to assemble and lead project team to meet projects criterions as per scope and deadlines. The tenth module, strategic management was helpful in sharpening my strategic management skills for long term gains and success. In eleventh strategic marketing module, I was able to plan, implement and execute the successful strategy for my company's strategic advantage. This was important achievement in strengthening my position and role as CIO.

The twelfth module was about MIS and by having best use of it I was able to get advantage from our core competencies. It increased the efficiency of our Supply Chain management significantly. The thirteenth module developed my skills are good human resources manager for strategic gains and advantage for the long run. The last module was about executing my authoritative role to review organizational behavior and change management without indulging in politics but maintaining good working relationship with management and workers as well.


In this Leadership Journal, I have analyzed my leadership learning from each module attended. It has been noted that LEAD program is well designed and focused on UAE nationals' leadership needs. In my role as CIO in a government organization, I have found remarkable improvements in my performance and efficiency.

This program was happens to be far more important and pivotal in UAE future. In my study and learning this program would bring forward the leaders to materialize UAE future vision. This in long run will be bringing durable and sustainable development as UAE runs out of oil reserves.
