Annotated Bibliography for the Technology, Ethical, and Moral aspect of Apple Pay

The discovery of technology is not a new concept for humans, Ever since the first caveman discovered how to make fire technology has grown. The ways we have made these technology discoveries have changed, we now use science to explore and develop new technology. Most of this technology has benefited the human race greatly, but with all the good it has achieved it has create almost an equal share of bad results. When humans found fire it gave them light in the darkness, warmth, and a way to defend themselves, but it also gave them a weapon to use against their follow man and nature. When humans started technology to work with metals it gave them tools to work in the fields, as well as everyday life, and again it gave the technology to make stronger and better tool of war. Humans grew and so did the technology, they discovered that by mixing certain elements and chemicals together they could create medicines, products that would stop insects from eating their corps, they could make stronger and durable products for work, and once more they could make weapons to harm their neighbors. During this time they discovered writing, art, and the developed the use of money so that they could buy thing they needed instead of trading for them, over time the ways to use money have grown and changed, instead of hard currency they develop hand money without having it on hand they could it credit. But with money came greed and the technology to misuse it or steal it for another person, so they develop ways to secure your money. It today’s world we have use technology to purchase item using electronic forms of money, many companies have tried many ways to do this and make it secure, safe, and efficient. I am looking at one of those companies and how their methods affect others.

This is a short article by Craig Lloyd where he talks about a few of the problems that Apply Pay systems are having. He talks about consumers being double charged on purchases made while using the Apply Pay technology mostly at Whole Foods and Bank of America. He then goes on and points out that many stores are not doing training of employees on the proper procedure for accepting Apple Pay, and hints that may be one of the problems with this new system.

My assessment: Even with being a small article I found it to be informative about a few of the problems associated with Apply Pay, Lloyd does not go into detail if it is operator error or a real software glitch. It does have a short one minute video on how to accept Apply pay and is geared for merchants. He explains how the technology stores the user’s information on an embedded chip in the phone and says that Apple does not store user’s data.

Luckerson, V. (2014, November 3). The Apple Pay Effect. Time, 184(17), pp. 14-16.

This article goes into detail about the history of online or electronic payment methods; it electronic covers all past and new type of payments. Luckerson covers on long list of providers that offer electronic payment methods, he compares them to each other and goes into detail on what the pro and cons are when using this method for making payments. He also explains how Apple will make money when merchants us their system, and what ones have shied away from using the new Apple Pay, it talks about technology that is newer then Apple’s systems.

My assessment: The article was well researched so that all of the options for electronic payment methods were covered. You can see that Luckerson took time to collaborate the facts to obtain accurate numbers and findings, He talked about present day technology and up and coming technology, as well as which business are accepting the new systems and which ones are not. He also looks at the difficulties that the Apple Pay has with bugs and glitches in the software. Even though Luckerson covers most if not all the methods he did not come out to state his favored system to use.

Reisinger, D. (2014). Apple Pay: The Pros and Cons of Using This Mobile Payment System.

In this article Don Reisinger list and discuss the Pro’s and Con’s of the Apple Pay technology. He presents a good assessment on each side of the argument, and compares Apply Pay with other electronic methods of paying. He describes what devices can and cannot use Apply Pay, as well as which business seen to lean towards Apply Pay and which ones do not. In the end he goes into what can make this new technology thrive or what will kill it in the end.

My assessment: This article covers a lot of the good and bad of the new Apply Pay technology, it goes and discusses the security of the technology and with the amount of data breaches that have happened this is of course a serious topic for today’s consumers. Mr. Reisinger covered which apple devices will work with the technology and those that will not, he clues into that it would force people to buy the newest Apply devices in order to use the new pay system. Another concern is what merchants say about the Apple Pay and what would it cost them to set up and accept it for payments, which has caused a mixed review. As Mr Reisinger states in the article “There might be millions of people around the globe who are running iPhone 6 units, but that doesn't mean that Apple Pay has truly been put to the test. Until those millions of people have a chance to get their hands on Apple Pay and put it through the paces at a wide range of retailers, we won't be sure how well it fares” (Reisinger, 2014). So basically until more than one or two test runs on the technology are conducted it is not known if the technology will deliver what Apply has promised.

This article also covered problems with the new Apple Pay but concentrated more on financial institutions and not so much the consumers, It explains some of the theories of why the problems are popping up and what may needs to be done to correct it, the article sort of blames both Apple and the institutions for the problems and says that because of the technology’s security systems that the institutions need to install new equipment to process the technology.

My assessment: I found this article very informative because it gave the view and assessed the technology for the side that would be the receiving end of transactions, which is the financial institution. It covers the problems they are having and what Apply says they need to do to fix the problem. They included quoted comments by upper executives of the financial institutions, and even though both sides need to correct issues they do some finger pointing.

In this article the author Ms. Molly Wood describes her experience in using the Apple Pay for in stores purchases. Even though she was happy with the technology she did mention some annoying issues dealing with having to enter her pin number or pick between credit or debit. She also describes how the technology worked with online purchases and said it was not as easy as in store shopping. But over all she was happy with the technology.

My assessment: This is the first article that I saw that was more on a positive look at the Apply Pay technology, granted she had small issues when using it but she says that that were no real bother. This is also the first article where the author was not pointing fingers or blaming anyone for the issues, which I found refreshing in the way of convincing me to look into the technology for my own use. She did say that have a couple of issue with using it online but was able to work around them and they did not prevent her from making the transaction.
