A mycotoxin is a fungal metabolite that causes an undesirable effect in exposed animals. While all mycotoxins originate from a fungus, not all toxic compounds produced by fungi are not characterized as mycotoxins. These unwanted effects are a result of the animal being in the state of mycotoxicoses, exposure often most likely from consumption.
