About sixty years ago, the invention of the television was viewed as a luxury and non-beneficial invention. Now, just about every single person in modernized countries own - if not one - several televisions in their home. Children and teenagers varying from ages 8-18 spend about 44 hours per week in front of the computer, television and game screens. Children are most affected by violence shown on television, or video games because they are easily influenced - they cannot tell fact from fiction at their age yet. Knowing this, you can assume that it is quite inevitable to be mesmerized and impacted by media and what is shown whether it is good or bad. Media does provoke violence amongst society and is so effective because of the availability and the lack of difficulty to acquire it through several different media methods and the three that are the most prominent are music, television shows, and video games.
The television has been around now for roughly sixty years now. If you go to your friend's house, they will have a TV, your cousins, your brother, your sister, your neighbour just about everyone has a TV; it is a staple in the lives of just about everyone. Violent acts on TV.are subjected all day long, even on children's television programs. In the USA an average of 20-25 violent acts are shown in children's television programs each hour (Browne, 2005). Not only is this an alarming statistic, it shows that children watch their TV shows with violence incorporated into them. Children have access to TV without their parent's supervision to watch what they watch. 57 per cent of kids aged 8 to 16 have TVs in their bedrooms (Annenberg Public Policy Center, 2002). If parents want to supervise what their children watch, they have a real tough time because of the fact that so many kids have a television in their room. With all of this exposure to TV, kids can easily get influenced by the shows depicted on the television. If a child watches a show such as Family Guy or South Park, they might think it's is a fun show to watch because it is a cartoon, but in fact it deals with mature humour that is not suitable for younger audiences. Seeing all of this violence on television, a child might grip it as being cool to be violent. Not being educated and rational adults, a child or teenager might think the best way to resolve a dispute would be through violence. Children do not realise that violence on television is there because that is what the public wants, not because it is always necessary. Violence through television is a major contributor to media's impact on violence because of how widely is accepted and available.
Music is everywhere, and everyone listens to some sort of music, whether it is religious, pop, rock, hip-hop, and jazz or country music - the list goes on. Music is getting much more violent and sadistic compared to when music was just sung for the fun of it. Now music is based on violent stories, rapes, murders, fights and gangs. Teenagers can have access to any type of music they want through illegal online downloading, music devices that can hold thousands of songs at the palm of their hand and music stores that allow purchasing CD's that are not rated to the according age. Music such as hip-hop portrays stories of violence and murder and teenagers look up to the artists that sing these songs as idols. An example would be a song by the rapper named Immortal Technique and a song called Dance with the Devil: "So Billy started robbing n*****, anything he could do to get his respect back, in the eyes of his crew starting fights over little s***, up on the block stepped up to selling mothers and brothers the crack rock." (Immortal Technique, Dance with the Devil). The artist of the song claims that this is a true story. A teenager listening to this song might think it's cool to start selling crack and fighting people over small things to gain respect from their friends. These songs can easily be downloaded off of the internet and put into an iPod to listen to whenever the need arises. With all of these new inventions such as iPods and Mp3's in which you can place thousands of songs into a little pocket fitting device, and the ability to download practically any song off of the internet for free, music is everywhere for anyone to use, or abuse and with such easy availability, it becomes a major factor in the impact of media on violence.
Lastly, video gaming has become quite a stir in today's society; a lot of people are hopping on to gaming including people who never used to play such as little children and old seniors. With such a rise in game play and so much production of gaming consoles (compared back when there was only one gaming system company, now there are 3 major companies battling each other) there is the opportunity for violent games to hit the market and start racking in the dollars because the public wants violent games. Video games are very easily accessible - the only problem a child or teenager might have acquiring them, is money. It does not matter what your age is, a store will allow a youth to buy a game even if it is not rated proportionally to the youth. Kids can find themselves visiting online websites where they can play online games for free also. Video games are presumably the most impacting of all media. In a video game, the person playing get's to control and perform the actions of the character; kind of like it is the person who is doing everything. So if the person kills someone in the game, in real life, the person might not hesitate to kill someone because they have already experienced it in a way. An example of a violent game would be Grand Theft Auto 3 (the best-selling game ever for PlayStation 2) the player can earn points by carjacking, and stealing drugs from street people and pushers, killing random civilians on the street and selling drugs. Video games are becoming increasingly popular and the games that are being created are becoming more violent - but it seems violent games are what the public wants.
In conclusion, media does impact violence in society because of the fact that the availability and lack of difficulty to acquire different sorts of media makes it easier for the younger generation (teenagers and children) to get consumed by violence in media. The three main contributors are television and how TV shows are not properly rated, a lot of kids have TV's in their rooms and almost every home in North America owns a television set. Secondly, music is getting increasingly violent with themes that suggest rape, drugs, gang violence and fights and it is extremely abundant due to inventions such as the Mp3, and iPod where you can have thousands of songs in the palm of your hand. Lastly, video games have also become increasingly popular with different consumer ages trying them out and that they can be easily accessed through the internet for free also. Children and teenagers should be watched and supervised more carefully by their parents due to all of the availability in the modern world of media in the ever-increasing battle against violence in media.
