Animation offers a medium of storytelling and visual entertainment which can bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world."
Walt Disney quotes (American motion-picture Producer, pioneer of animated cartoon films. 1901-1966).
Will motion capture replace hand crafted animation?
"Motion Capture is a way to record human movement. The data can be used to animate digital characters in films, games, broadcasted animated stories, ads, virtual environments to get realistic human movement. Motion Capture can also be used in medical and sports applications to analyze human movement". This is not the new technique but it was come from the old technique call Rotoscoping. Disney used the rotoscoping technique in their first feature animation movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937).
History of animation movie
Charles Emile Reynaud was created the first animation film, and it was projected at the Musee Grevin in Paris (1892). He used 12 frames per minute, and his movie consisting of 500 frames. In 1906 J. Stuart Blackton created the first standard film animation movie "humorous phases of funny faces". After the success of standard film animated movies, the most of them tried to do a feature film in animation. After that, there are 9 feature films in the time period of 1908 to 1937. In that Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) were well known for first English speaking movie.
The New York Institute of Technology Computer Graphics Lab, Rebecca Allen used a half-silvered mirror to superimpose videotapes of real dancers onto the computer screen to pose a computer generated dancer for Twyla Tharp's "The Catherine Wheel." The computer take that poses as key and it generated animation.
(Why was this considered to be the beginning of motion capture and explain?)
(Mention the beginning of film and photography and beginning of animation. Mention that the beginning of animation talks about bringing things to life. 24 frames per second etc. - talk about techniques, how they started and how they developed) the rotoscope technique is the one of the most important for animation. In 1915 Max Fleischer developed rotoscope technique. "KOKO the clown" was the first cartoon character was rotoscoped. After that, Disney studios used the same technique by implementing the human movement from captured film to cartoon characters. The first movie was created using motion of human character was "Snow White" in 1937.
(Look in to when and how computers first started to be used and use some examples) After that, they stared using computer based technique to animate the character. In late 70's the new technique emerged called "Motion Capture". (Who created this and used it first) It was not new, it come from the old technique rotoscoping. It helps to recorded movement using motion capture suit and was transmitted to computer character model make it to do the same. This technique is used to speed up the production and less the production cost
In early 80's Biomechanics lab in Simon Fraser University were begin to use computer to analyze the motion of human. That device and technique further used in the computer graphics community. This technique was used to trace the knee flexion; they use exoskeleton in each leg, and position a potentiometer alongside each knee. The output was further converted into digital form into computer animation system. Then system used motion capture together with lab notation and kinematic to fully character motion. These are the early step to develop the motion capture technique.
The traditional animation are hand drawing animation, Cel animation, Rotoscoping, stop motion animation's (Clay animation (Strata-cut animation), Cut out animation (Silhouette animation), Graphic animation, Model animation, Object animation, Pixilation, Puppetoon), Computer animation - 2D animation (Flash animation, PowerPoint animation. SVG animation), 3D animation-(Cel-shaded animation, Crowd simulation, Morph target animation, Non-photorealistic rendering, Skeletal animation), Other methods like Drawn on film animation, Flip book, Inbetweening, Paint-on-glass animation, Pinscreen animation, Pixel art and Sand animation. (what is the relevance of this to the subject - maybe put it in the section where you talk about how animation first started and what it has developed into)
In early year's, animators drew thousands of sketch and paint many cell to animate the film. Now the production companies were not too much preferring hand drawn animated series, instead of that they try to bring the film in realistic and more effective using computer animation. But now we forgot the some of the traditional techniques like Squash and Stretch.
Squash and Stretch is the main principal for hand drawing animation. The rigid body animation was mainly depending on squash and stretch technique. When you saw the ball in the motion, it will compress when it hits the ground and elongated when it in air. But one thing wants to remember it never change its volume.
From the famous production company 'Walt Disney Productions' given famous award winning movies from snow white (1937) to UP (2009). They started from hand drawing and now they using 3d animation and motion capture in there latest movies. It shows that periodical invention made changes in the film industry. There is some hand drawing movies like Bambi, Dumbo, Cinderella, Alice in wonderland. And some digital animation film like bug's life, toy story, monsters inc., Finding NEMO.
Like Walt Disney production, the famous company for animation and digital work is WETA Digital. They won academy award for visual effect based on New Zealand. They worked movies like The lord of the rings(2001,2002,2003), Van Helsing(2004), I, Robot(2004), King Kong(2005), X-Men The Last stand(2006), Eragon(2006), Night at the Museum(2006), Rise of the Silver surfer(2007), Enchanted(2007), The water horse(2007), Jumper(2008), The chronicles of Narnia : Prince Caspian(2008), The earth stood still(2008), The Warrior's Way(2009) and upcoming movies like The Lovely Bones(2009), Avatar(2009), The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn(2011), The Hobbit(2011), Halo(2012), The Hobbit 2(2012). They work with award winning directors like Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Phillip Noyce, and Robert Zemeckis.
