Learning Cycle

Kolbe’s Learning Cycle

In 1984 Kolb describe about a learning cycle called “Experiential learning in which he explained a circle of learning.

Circle

When an individual experience the world through senses, the learning cycle begins. Kolbe states this stage as “concrete experience” and the experience must be real world experience, not the experience through books or others. If individual wants to learn from experience, he must engage in the second stage of consciously reflecting an what he has experienced. Kolbe calls this step as “Reflective Observation”. Reflection is selective and past experience is influenced by expectations and existing meaning of the individual. Abstract conceptualization is the third step of the cycle. Make sense of what individuals have experience is called abstract conceptualization. Active experimentation is the final step of the learning cycle. In this stage individuals test out the meaning that individuals have constructed by taking action in the world which then loads to new experience.

Honey and Munford Learning Cycle

Circle

In 1992 Honey and Munford developed the learning styles inventory. According to Honey and Munford “The term learning style is used as a description of the attitudes and behaviors which determines an individuals preferred way of learning”.

Honey and Munford stated four stages of learning and described that an individual can begin learning anywhere from the cycle and he does not have to start at first stage. In stage one, individual can receive information by having an experience. Then he reviews his experience in stage two. In stage three individual makes some tentative conclusions and finally in stage four individual plans a course of action and undertake the course of action. Individual can join the cycle at any point.
