Organisational Culture - Introduction
Welcome to the Organisational Culture chapter! Organisational culture is a very important factor which influences the behaviour in organisations. It is very difficult to define what organisational culture is due to its unspoken rituals and implicit rules. Organisational culture also changes over time and organisational behaviour changes with it.
This chapter will begin by discussing what culture is and why it is important. This will be followed by considering different types of culture, such as organisational and national, with different examples of organisational culture models in practice being discussed. Some of those include: Schein’s, Handy, Deal and Kennedy, and Johnson and Scholes’ models.
In today’s working environment it is very important to take culture into account, especially when considering multiculturalism at the workplace. This is because bringing together different perspectives, helps to create innovative solutions and also allows organisations to understand the needs of their marketplace. As such, this is aspect is strategically evaluated in this chapter. The chapter ends with a discussion of how culture can be managed effectively and why culture management is needed.
