Factors That Influence Job Satisfaction Tourism Essay

Job satisfaction is one of the essential variables in work and organizational psychology and is seen as a key sign of working life excellence . Job satisfaction is also defined as an attitude that persons have about their jobs. It is a degree to which one feels positively or negatively about the intrinsic and/or extrinsic aspects of one’s job (Bhuian & Menguc, 2002; Hunt et al., 1985).

Job satisfaction has been an interesting construct for researchers in understanding employee behaviours and attitudes. It is an important work-related attitude in workforce research for several reasons (Boles et al., 2003). Cited from muhammad masroor alam, jamilha fakir mohammad (2009) “Level of job satisfaction and intent to leave among

Malaysian nurses” at

Beyond the research literature and studies, job satisfaction is also essential in everyday life. Organisations have significant effects on the people who work for them and some of those effects are reflected in how people think about their work (Spector, 1997). This makes job satisfaction an issue of importance for both employers and employees. As many studies suggest, employers profit from satisfied employees as they are more likely to profit from lower staff turnover and higher productivity if their employees experience a high level of job satisfaction. However, employees should also ‘be happy in their work, given the amount of time they have to devote to it throughout their working lives’ (Nguyen, Taylor and Bradley, 2003a). Job satisfactions can be influenced by a range of factors, including the quality of relationships with superiors and colleagues, the degree of fulfilment at work and prospects for promotion

http://www.bja.oxfordjournals.org (2004). Job satisfaction can also be seen as an important organizational variable which can either be an independent or dependent one (Knight, 2004).

The dependent factors include the individual characteristics (values, interests, needs, attitudes); the characteristics of the organisation (reward practices, physical work environment, colleagues, immediate supervisor) and the characteristics of the job (types of intrinsic rewards, the degree of autonomy, the amount of direct performance feedback, and the variety of tasks). Some of the independent variables that have been found to affect job satisfaction are employee motivation and performance (Ostroff, 1992), employee absenteeism (Hackett and Guion, 1985) and turnover (Griffeth et al., 2000). Diener et al. (1999) gave an explanation to what determines job satisfaction.

Young employees today are the glory of an organisation tomorrow. The organisation will have a good productive future if the old employees have the right people to leave the organisation dignity with when leaving the company. With this in mind, the young employees should be catered for psychologically, emotionally, financially, and in the areas of packages by the management in order to have people who will cater for their organisation when they are no more.

This study investigates the factors that actually influence job satisfaction among city based young employees and also analyses the possible correlation between:

job satisfaction and the city life among the young city based employees;

job satisfaction and the managerial/supervisory supports among the young city based employees;

job satisfaction and opportunity gained at work among the young city based employees.

Recommendation will be given to the management and the government based on the study’s findings.

RESEARCH PROBLEM

Even though lots of research work had been done on job satisfaction, many well known researchers in the field had worked on the factors influencing job satisfaction and they had come up with many of them. The following are some of the factors; supervisory style, job design and redesign, personal status, work roles, emotional state of the employees, future wage expectation/career aspiration and the position occupied in an organization. Many young people prefer to work in the city rather than suburbs or villages. Young people aspire to work in the city immediately they graduated without thinking of the city hassles. They jumped into any available city work and would have signed the contract/agreement before realising what they are in for.

While a significant body of literature has been created concerning job satisfaction and factors influencing job satisfaction of the employees, little research had been done on young city based employees. What is often forgotten is that the mature employees might have achieved job satisfaction due to the number of years he/she had put in. The research problem I plan to investigate is the factors that influence job satisfaction of the city based young employees. In other words, if the city based young employees are jobs satisfied, what are the actual factors that influence this?

Another research problem I plan to investigate is to check whether there is a possible correlation between:

job satisfaction and the city life among the city based young employees;

job satisfaction and the managerial/supervisory supports among the city based young employees;

job satisfaction and opportunity gained at work among the city based young employees.

RESEARCH QUESTION

In this current study, the following questions will be thoroughly examined and adequately answered:

Is job satisfaction important index for the young city based

employees to choose working in the city?

Are the young city based employees jobs satisfied at all?

What is the various factors influence the job satisfaction of the

young city based employees?

Is there any correlation between:

Job satisfaction and the city life among the city based young employees?

Job satisfaction and the managerial/supervisory supports among the city based young employees?

Job satisfaction and opportunity gained at work among the city based young employees?

OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH

The first objective of the study is to identify job satisfaction as an important index for the young city based employees to choose working in the city. The second objective is to determine the major factors that actually influence job satisfaction among the young city based employees. The third objective is to analyse the possible correlation between:

job satisfaction and the city life among the city based young employees;

job satisfaction and the managerial/supervisory supports among the city based young employees;

job satisfaction and opportunity gained at work among the city based young employees.

The last objective of this study is to recommend management roles that may influence the young city based employees to be job satisfied and also to provide the management and the government with the necessary information to implement strategies to improve the level of job satisfaction among the city based young employees.

PURPOSE/SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

This study is very much significant because it will be one of the few if not the only one studying the factors that influence job satisfaction of the city based young employees. The use of variance theory to accurately determine the factors also make it significant. The study is also important because it will throw light on the actual factors that influence the young graduates, those entering the world of work for the first time, school leavers, etc., to choose to work in the cities rather than villages or suburbs. The study is also important because it will analyse the possible correlation between:

job satisfaction and the city life among the city based young employees;

job satisfaction and the managerial/supervisory supports among the city based young employees;

job satisfaction and opportunity gained at work among the city based young employees.

Another importance of the study is that my recommendations will benefit the management especially the recruitment consultants/managers to include adequate incentives in their jobs packages that will cater for the well being of their young workers/staffs in order to make them job satisfied so that the young employees today can cater for their organisation when they are no more. It will also benefit the academics, policy makers and student researchers.

THE CHAPTER STRUCTURE

The next chapter of this study will discuss the strengths and the weaknesses of all the literature I have read on job satisfaction. I will lay emphasis on their research problems, theories adopted, methods used and their conclusions. I will also highlight how my study is to contribute to these literatures by including the new knowledge to fit in the current literature. I will also remark on the theory that I will use for this study and give and explain the reasons why I have chosen the theory.

The chapter 3 of this study will deal with the research design and methodology. Discussion will be made on the strengths and the weaknesses of the quantitative and the qualitative methods used. I will give a full description of the methods that I will use in this study; addressing location selection, respondent selection and time frame.

The data analysis techniques to be used and the reasons for using them will be discussed. Also the strengths and the limitations of the methods will be discussed.

The chapter four will discuss the data presentation and analysis. Brief explanation will be made on how the data for the study was collected, sampling procedure, administration of questionnaires and the response rate for the study. The results of findings will be fully explained in this chapter using charts, tables etc. The summary on the findings will then be related to the literature review for easy understanding of the study. Interpretation of the findings will also be made in this chapter

Conclusion and recommendations will be made in chapter 5 for the academics, managers, policy makers and student researchers.
