Hunting Idaho Animal

Hunting in Idaho

There are many aspects of Idaho hunting that most people don't ever consider. This is partly dew to the classic TV hunt that is portrayed in the media. The classic TV hunt is almost always successful, producing a trophy animal and presenting little challenge. In the classic TV hunt you are furnished with a guide. This guide usually has done the scouting and knows exactly when and where the animals will be.

As if this wasn't enough, in other states, where most hunting shows are filmed, it is often legal to use bate or food plots as a way to attract, hold and ambush the sought after animals. Bait or food plots are put in place sometimes months in advance. Once animals form habits around the food source they can be easily intercepted. In Idaho, however, this is illegal in every game species other than bear.

There is also a distinct difference in the land ownership between Idaho and most other states. In most states, excluding Idaho, much of there hunting opportunities are on private land. This allows game to be managed by landowners, resulting in better odds of harvesting a trophy animal. In Idaho, however, “The state is two-thirds public land and a new Fish and Game program called Access Yes! is opening up more private land every year.”(ID fish and game, hunting in Idaho).

Idaho also boasts a wide variety of game species not found in most other states.

Idaho has some of the best and most varied hunting in the west! From the trophy species of moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goat to the more often hunted deer ,mule deer AND whitetails, elk and antelope, Idaho covers it all. We hunt black bear and mountain lions too, and a variety of upland game, turkeys and waterfowl. Licenses and tags are available over the counter for almost every species. (ID fish and game, hunting in Idaho).

Idaho also boasts a range of terrain to mach the many different game species. Southern Idaho consists of mostly high desert in the owyhee mountains scattered with sage brush and junipers. As you move north towards the snake river you will see canyons and cliffs that are truly humbling. The snake river itself covers many types of terrain, reaching from the canyon country and high desert of southwest Idaho threw vast planes and rolling hills on to the forests of Yellowstone national park. Move still further north and you find yourself among some of the finest whitewater rivers in the west, the Payette and salmon rivers. And from there on up it seems the further north you go the denser the forest gets.

Big game hunters in Idaho are strictly regulated on the proper care and utilization of harvested game. The Idaho fish and game clearly states this as follows.

Hunters are required to remove and care for the edible meat of big game animals, except mountain lion. This includes the meat of the front quarters as far down as the knee, hindquarters as far down as the hock, neck meat, meat along the backbone, and meat covering the ribs. It does not include meat of the head, internal organs, or meat on the bones after close trimming. (fish and game, general laws.)

This assures that no harvested game is wasted. If you violate these guidelines either loss of license or substantial fines will be your punishment.

The Idaho hunting season takes up almost half of the year. “Hunting season starts with dove season on September 1st” (idfg, upland game seasons and rules.) it then rolls on threw quail, dear and elk archery. There are duck and goose season that last most of the winter. Starting in October you can rifle hunt for deer, elk, and bear until mid November. There are also hunting seasons during this portion of the year for pheasant, and grouse. Duck season runs clear threw January. From there you switch over to spring bear and turkey hunts.

In Idaho there are, as well as seasons on different species, seasons for different weapons on those species. In elk, for example, there are early muzzleloader hunts. In muzzleloader season elk can be harvested using a traditional patch and ball muzzleloader.

Then during the rut, breading season for elk, hunters take there chances in archery. During archery season elk can be taken with any method of archery including the compound bow, excluding the crossbow. Archery is a much more primitive method of hunting with a much higher skill level required. Although archery is more difficult to be successful at some hunters prefer it for its up close and personal qualities.

After archery season comes any weapon season. Any weapon season is just like it sounds, you can use any weapon. This includes bow and arrow, muzzleloader, and rifle. However, this season does exclude all rim fire weapons such as the 22, 17, and 204 calibers. This is dew to the fact that these calibers are too small and pose serious risk of wounding game.
