Abdellah Physiology University
Faye Glenn Abdellah was recognized for all her research and dedication to revolutionize nursing. It all begin at Fitkin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, were she graduated magna cum laude in 1942. She continued her education and acquired many degrees after, such as her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing 1945, a Master of Arts degree in physiology in 1947, and her Doctor of Education degree in 1955 which was from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her profession she has had numerous employment positions and has climbed the ladder from the bottom up. Abdellah started her profession as a staff nurse. Since then in her journey she has been a faculty member at Yale University and Columbia University. Her first teaching job was at Yale University.
Where she was given guidelines of what she must teach to other nursing students. The guidelines had no significant scientific research. She eventually became frustrated with the fact that nurses were supposed to follow such strict procedures without knowing why that she burned all the textbooks in Yale’s courtyards.

In 1949 she began working at the U.S. Public Health Service and has held a variety of positions. One of her utmost accomplishments was being the first nurse, and women to be chosen as Deputy Surgeon General for the U.S. Public Health Service in 1982.
Her roles contributed to advising on matters such as aging, hospice, nursing, long-term care policy, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and countless additional issues. This was the final position she held for 7 years, until her retirement in 1989. A couple years later Abdellah in 1993 Abdellah was the founder and was the dean of the Graduate School of Nursing is Bethesda, Maryland.
Abdellah also contributed too countless countries around the world with her knowledge and experiences. She studied about the care of the elderly and mentally retarded in the People’s Republic of China. In Portuguese she helped the government develop a program for the care of the elderly and the disabled. As well as assist with the development of the nursing research programs at Tel Aviv University in Israel. She has made immense contributions to additional countries as well as, Yugoslavia, France, Soviet Union, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
Thought her life Abdellah has received numerous awards and honors for her contribution and hard work. Just to name a few that she received; an honorary degree from the University of Bridgeport for devoting her career to advancing the quality of healthcare; the Federal Nursing Service Award for the advancement of professional nursing; the first presidential award of Sigma Theta Tau International; Allied-Signal Achievement Award for research in aging. These are just to name a few of the over 70 awards she has received through out her lifetime.
Abdellah’s source can not be pinpointed to one area. One thing she did know was that nursing had a huge barrier that kept them for continuing their professional status. She knew that the lack of knowledge of anatomy and physiology was holding nursing back. Along with the advances in technology that were rapidly growing on a daily basis.
On the other hand nursing was based on the needs of the institution rather than the needs of the patients. She did not believe that this was the acceptable manner in which to evaluate nurses doing their job. This is where the problem-solving methods formed. Some of her inspiration came from Virginia Henderson, who created 14 principles, along with her own experiences in the field through work as well as research.
The problem–solving methods called, the typology of 21 nursing problems, were created by Abdellah along with her collogues. It was divided into three areas.
