Channels Television Children
“Indecent TV channels will be shut down”, this is the message that Dahy Khalfan Tamim started his interview with Gulf News (Ahmad, 2005). The percentage of crimes, suicide and violence's in the street and schools are increasing year after year in different places around the world. Many different websites, printed media such as magazines and surveys has concluded that the main reason behind this dilemma is the types of programs that television channels present on daily basis. This problem is affecting the whole society, but children and teenagers are the most affected ones due to their vulnerability when they face society and get exposed to different things. Nowadays, most of the children spend their time watching Television instead of performing other beneficial activities such as reading or playing sports. This habit has a great affect on society in general; it influences children's personality and it also affects the whole family negatively in many ways. Cable Televisions became the most important thing in our life and we should have a censorship on TV channels for several reasons. First of all, the sexual scenes in the movies increase teenager's interest in sex. The second reason is that media violence will encourage the aggressive behavior in these adolescences personality. In addition, music video clips promotes pornographic images; and finally political programs contains aggressive language.
First, Sexual scenes in the movies must be eliminated and crossed out. The main reason is that teenagers get influenced and affected by things they see and hear around themselves, so being exposed to these types of programs will exaggerate their concupiscence and their fantasies about this controversial subject. Sexual scenes being aired on television has many negative consequences on children and teenagers who watch these programs without parental supervision. One of the most shocking incidents that affected society and forced the authorities in the country to take a significant action is when a teenager was watching a movie that contained inappropriate scenes with his young sister without the presence of their parents. The brother and his sister were home alone watching a movie that contained a sexual scene, after watching the improper clip of the movie they ended up having sex and practicing the detailed sexual scene that they saw. Many people neglect the fact that teenagers are at a very critical age and they can get influence easily, watching these improper television programs will encourage and breed there curiosity about sex which is a normal thing in their age.
Second, many researches have shown that the violent scenes in the movies and the programs also affect the adolescences and it has to be censored. Some people think that this is a serious matter but on the other hand, many individuals do not even seem to care. However, the facts are undeniable. Many studies and experiments were carried out, and all of them pointed to one conclusion: television violence causes children to be violent, and the effects can be life-long. We should have censorship in our television channels because violence scenes may affect the children's behaviors. In my opinion, it is impossible to ignore the huge number of data and people responses that support the fact that violent television programs leads to violence behavior. Violence on television can create aggressive behavior. A very good example of this subject is the difference between children's behavior during the mid 90's and this generation's children's behavior. During the 90's we grew up in a less violence environment and children tended to be less aggressive compared to today's generation. We were not exposed to television and violent programs and news as children are in the new millennium. Solving this problem is not easy. They are many factors to consider and people to convince. But one fact that no one can deny is that if we let the TV channels present these violent movies and aggressive scenes and programs we will have a new destructive generation, and that is not good for our nation. Therefore, strict censorship is a must have to introduce better programs and set some strict and unchangeable rules in the material that is being aired on television channels to save our children and help them grow in a healthy environment.
The government should also impose strict censorship on the music video clips. The video clips that are being aired nowadays are very demeaning and meaningless. The lyrics and video clips are being created with one goal; stimulating the audience's interest through introducing pornographic images. These new video clips and songs are damaging the meaning and art of music and they tend to stimulate erotic feelings to the listeners by portraying blatant sexual activities. According to one of the researches made about this subject, “These videos corrupt the meaning of music and art by concentrating on sexual temptation, which attracts teenagers” (Atef, March 15, 2005). Sometimes video clips contain strong language and inappropriate vocabulary which is not suitable for children and teenagers. So by imposing censorship, these inappropriate erotic words and moves must be eliminated by cutting these improper parts of the clip. In my opinion, these video clip production companies should be fined or shut down to help our nation grow up in the right way.
Finally, many people do not tend to consider political programs as an inappropriate program. However, some of the political programs turn at the end to a fight and to a political dilemma because of the controversial topics being discussed. These political programs should have censorship because it causes fights and open other unfortunate topics while discussing political issues. Causing fights and verbal aggressive behavior is not an appropriate message that a program must deliver to its viewers and audience. Recently, we noticed that some TV channels add a new option on their TV which is writing messages on their screens. These messages must also have a censorship because some people type strong languages and choose bad words in their text which does no good to the readers.
As the negative outcomes represented by the visual media devices had increased, especially its effect on our children and teenagers, many researches helped find a solution for this problem. One of the most important solutions that were discussed as an effective way of creating a good environment for the viewers is imposing self-censorship. If we cannot reach fully censorship on the television channels, then people must try to achieve and accept Self-censorship. Self-censorship has a big meaning, it is not a long list of what we can or cannot watch. In fact it is the self awareness and sense of responsibility in parents, children, teenagers and the government. All of them share the responsibility for self-censorship. If the government prevents presenting sexual movies, violence and sexual music video clips; our adolescences will be much more secured and better raised and behaved. But in case if the government did not impose censorship, then it is the parents responsibility to impose censorship on their satellite television channels at homes. Parents that have inappropriate television channels that air unsuitable programs must lock these channels through “parental lock” which is simply a password that must be entered by the parents before watching the locked channels. In addition, people must interact with the ministry of media and they should work with the government to select and enforce only the right sorts of programs.
In conclusion, if we did not impose a strong censorship on television channels we will be facing big problems. People might think that censorship is not that important, but if we looked at the amount of negative outcomes of television programs we would know that it matters and it is an important issue. These programs affect the future of our generation because they are being introduced inappropriate sexual scenes in early ages of their life. They are also being introduced to an aggressive environment and pornography; moreover, they are being introduced to political fights and unsuitable choice of vocabulary. Being imposed to all these issues is very damaging to adolescences and even to other members of the society. We have to find a quick solution for this problem, for example, we have to prevent children from watching the violence movies by presenting these movies in specific times. For the self-censorship, parents are the most important variable in this concept, because they can delete these channels or impose a “parental lock” on the channels that are presenting inappropriate movies and programs. For the political programs, the government should take the responsibility and enforce very brutal rules for the channels to choose the right topic to discuss.
